the purpose of selecting delegates to the

RAFTING. Several rafts passed this
place ou Monday, for the lower marlels
the river being in excellent running condi
tion at this point.
Laws. On the outside of to-day's Jour
nal will be found the laws relating to the
floating of looe saw-logs, and the construct
in? of schutos in dams, in the Susquehanna
river. Read them.
New Goods. We would state, for the
information of the public, that Ed. W.
Graham has just received his first supply of
seasonable goods, which he is now offering
at prices to suit the times. Call and S2C.
Township Auditors will do well to exam
ine the law which compels thrtn to have the
bounty accounts, as audited by them, adver
tised in two Tiewspnpers. The act may be
found on page 778 of the Pamphle Laws of
lSflG.
To Scholars. Rev. P. L. Harrison,
principal "f the Clearfield Academy, having
been called away on account of tho serious
illness of his father, there will be no school
f,r, perhaps, ten days. Due notice of his
return wiil be given in the papers.
Accident. We are informed that on
Saturday, May 18th, Mr. John Antes, son
.f William Antes, cf this county, had a leg
cut off on the saw mill of Mr. C. M. Gra
ham, at Frostburg, Maryland. Little hopes
of bis recovery wore entertained. These
are all the facts' we could learn respecting
the accident.
Ttfm. Last week we copied, from the
Williamsport St'itifanl, a notice of the
drowning of a Mis Moore, of Clearfield
tumy. in Lye; niii.r creek, "Lycoming coun
ty. We are informed that the young lady
was the daughter of Rev. Harvey Moore,
of Decatur township. The body was arter
wr.rils recovered.
Dk. Newton. Whenever the "cele
brated Dr. Newton, of Newport, Rhode
Island, can't cure his patients from
'barfield, lie tells them to go home and
buy all their goods at Mossop's, and
they will surely get well. Who says
Xewton ain'ta good Doctor?
A Serenade. We were honored with a
- renade on Monday night last. But as to
vhnm we are indebted for the sweet melody
of song that floated out upon the air and
awaked us from our slumbers, we are not
aare; nevertheless, we tender the sere
nailers our hearty thanks, and wish them
each a pretty wife, and joy and happiness
a!! their lives.
Apoplectic Stroke. On Friday, May
21th, whilst John Maguey, of Lawrence
township, was in Mr. Mossop's store, in this
place, he was suddenly affected with apo
plexy, arid ft.ll to the floor. After some
restoratives were applied he was removed to
the residence of Father Tracy, in this bor
ough, where he still remains in a critical
condition. But little hopes are entertained
of his recovery.
A Sad Accident. We are informed
that, on Sunday, May 19th,, a little daugh
ter of Patrick Daily, of Penn township,
a?ed about five years, met with a fatal ac
cident. A heavy wagon-bed had been
ptawd in a leaning position against the
fcn.v, upon which the little girl attempted
to climb, but her weight upturned the bed,
a'l in its fall fell upon and smashed the
child s head causing almost instant death.
This is truly a lamentable, as well as unlook
e 1-for accident. The parents have the sym
pathy 0f tj10 community in their sad
bereavement.
Still They Come ! It may not re amiss
to state that Messrs. Wright & Flanigan,
n Second street, are just opening their
Spring stock. Great care has been exer
ciid in the selection of their goods, and
lHv feel warranted in saying that they can
seH as low as their neighbors, and" afprices
l,J suit all who may favor them with their
ctotn. Adam is a good salesman, affable
and accommodating, and persons are invited
10 give taeni a call before buying elsewhere

: arf epitome of which is here presented :
One night last wetk two valuable ho ses
; were stolen from Mr. Henry Utzinger, of
Brady township, near the Jeflcrsoti line.
A man named James Lee, was arrested
and lodged in our county jail, on Tuesday
night, May 21st, on a charge of having
stolen a gun from John Hoover, jr., of Bra
dy township. It is believed that he also
has some knowledge of the stealing of 31r.
Utzinger's horses.
On Tuesday night, May 21st,some thieves
broke into Mr. McBride's spring-house, in
Lawrence township, arid carried off two
crocks of apple-butter, two crocks of lard,
and some other articles. A lot of clothes,
which had just been washed and hung bat
to dry, were also taken the same night, per
haps by the same party.
Some malicious villiaitj, on the night of
Tuesday, May 21st, entered the carriage
house of Mr. George W. Gearhart, in this
borough, and cut the aprons off several of
his carriages and .buggies. It is supposed
to have been the work of the thieves who
broke into and robbed Mrs. Wel.-h's store,
on the same night the aprons, no doubt,
being used as a covering to protect the
stolen goods from injury by the rain.
A man named David Henderson, purport
ing to hail from Pittsbure, was arrested
just as he was going out of this borough on
Wednesday morning. May 22d, on suspicion
of being concerned in the robbery of Mrs.
Welsh's store an account of which we
published last week. Some ill-shaped foot
prints in the garden, in the rear of the store
led to his arrest he having a crippled foot.
After a hearing before Justice Shugart he
was committed to jail to awaij. a trial.
A man named John Appleton. who
had been boarding at Mr. Peters', in Brad
ford township, was arrested and lodged in
jail, on Wednesday, May 22d, for beating
and abusing a cow belonging to Mr Robert
Lansberry, of Bradford township. The
maltreating of a dumb brute, for revenge, is
an aft which should subje 't the perpetrator
to the severest penalty of the law.
On Thursday, May, 23d, John Stevens
was arrested at Phillipsburg and brought to
this place, and lodged in jail, on a charge of
being one of the thieves who stole two horses
from Ilonry Utzinger, in Brady township,
last week. It would seem that there exists
a regular organized gang of horse thieves, in
this county at present, and it is to be hoped
they may all be arrested and punished.
An alleged accomplice of Stevens, named
John Barler, was also arrested at Philips
burg. on Friday, Mav 24th, and brought
here and lodged in jail, on the charge of
having assisted in stealing Mr. Utzinger's
horses, alluded to above.
George Robins, his wife and son. residing
about one mile above Curwensvi'le, were
arrested on Friday, May 24ih. and brought
to -this place, charged with having shot two
hog- belonging to James A. Bloom, Esq.,
of Pike township, and for threatening to
kill Mr. B's cattle. After a hearing before
Justice Shugart, they were released on bail
for their appearance at court.
Frederick Korb, a hotel keeper in Brady
township, had a hearing on Friday, May
24th, on a charge of" concealing stolen goods,
and entered bail for his appearance at the
Jefferson count5T court. It seems that some
harness and a robe were stolen in Jefferson
county, and left at Korb's house for safe
keening, by Barber and Lee, now confined
in our jail, but. whether Korb knew of their
being stolon is not apparent the owner of
the articles not even knowing, for several
days, of his los.
James Huff and a young man namd
Fisher, were arrested on Friday, May 24th.
for an assault with stones upon George B.
Losran, of Lawrence township. They en
tered bail for their appearance at the next
term of our courts. .

highly of the benefits conferred upon thorn by
the use of this certain remedy. It has nevar
been known to fail in effecting a permanent cure
in a single case. In this respect it surpasses all
othcrnredicines of the kind. It will, do just
what it is recommended for ;" if not. the money
will be refunded. One or two boxes ts sufficient
to effect a permanent cure in four or six days, if
the directions on the box are followed. Price one
