To Lovers of the Weed. Your atten
tion is directed to the advertisement of
Messrs. Hegarty & Fullmer, 299 Liberty
Street, Pittsburgh, and if you want any
thin? in their line they can suit you. Their
gtock of all kinds of Tobacco is particulary
fine, and their stock of pipes of the great
est variety. Dealers will find it of advan
tage to give Messrs. H. & F. a call.
Beautiful the sign of Fleming & Hoel's
new Clothing Store, in Curwensville. It is
certainly a fine exhibition of skill in the art
of pain ting. The sign corresponds well with
the large stock of mens' and boys' clothing,
just received from the city, which they are
selling cheaper than the cheapest Also,
the latest styles of Hats, with an assortment
of stationery and notions. Call and exam
ine before purchasing elsewhere.
The Penn'a IlESEavES. In our adver
tising columns will be found a notice of the
meeting of the Penn'a Reserve Association,
at llarrisburg, on Thursdayr May 30, 18G7.
Company C of. the 5th, and Company K
of the Bucktails, two organizations -wholly
composed of men from this mountain re
gion, and who were always in the front -f
battle, should be fully represented in the
meeting referred to. Then, let all go who
can make it convenient to do so.
Heavy Robbery. On Tuesday night,
May 21st, some thieves effected an entrance
into Mrs. Welsh's Millinary store, in this
borough, by cutting away the lower half of
the back-yard window with a chisel, and
carried away goods to the amount of be
tween two and three hundred dollars. The
thieves were experts, as they took all the
goods from the shelves, and selected only
the most valuable articles. 1 1 is to be hoped
they will be caught and punished.
Jugged instead of Marrifj. A rath
er amusing episode in real life occurred in
ti:s county last week. Some months since
man named Kauffman, a saddler by trade,
wine to Curwensville and obtained work.
Ia the course of time he made the acquaint
ance of a young lady a few miles from town,
to whom he made love, .proposed and
wa accepted, and had the day fixed for the
nuptials. But, as "the course of love does
not always run smooth," so in this instance
Kniet with an interruption. On the day,
m the evening of which the wedding was
w come off, the father of the young lady,
ho was averse to the marriage, was in
formed that his intended son-in-law was al
ready married, and that his wife was living
io the neighboring county of Blair. The
father at once sought legal advice, and, as
Kaufman had obtained some money from
the daughter for the purpose of purchasing
oe.,'fixins',-for her, but which never
ttme to hand, had a warrant issued for the
est of the lover for obtaining money un
der false pretenses. Armed with this pro
of the law, the father hastened to his
hme, where he arrived in time to prevent
e carriage of his daughter, and at once
Proceeded to arrest her lover, over whom
he kept watcb all night, with a loaded re
!. Ver in hand, and the next day delivered
tu prisoner to Sheriff Faust, at the county
M there to await his trial for the offense
' which he has been charged. This cir
fonwtance is but another warning to young
les; not to be too hasty in bestowing their
actions upon a comparative stranger.
ho are inclined to do so, should first
the lines of the old song, '
lXow take your time Miss Lucy,
. Miss Lucy, Lucy Lo-ng,"
ff then. our word for it, they will never be
n in" by a stranger, nor regret their
in the choice of a lover.
Clarion County. --(). We lnn.ay,May
15th, Mr. Reuben Dunkle, of lacking town
ship, was thrown from his horse, and as he
.' fell to the ground the horse kicked and kill
j ed Mr. D. The deceased was well known
j in that county, and his death was regretted
by many friends.
Clotue-tdieves About. On last night,
May 21st, some unprincipled scoundrel stole
all the shirts and pocket-handkerchiefs be
longing to Mr. Geo. N. Colburn, of this bor
ough, off the clothe3-line in the yard. Per
sons should keep a "sharp eye" on their
clothes when hung out to dry.
Luzerne County. A prize fight occur
red near Providence, two weeks ago, between
Michael Collins and William Jones. Twenty-seven
rounds were fought, occupying one
hour and forty minutes. Jones was but
slightly injured, while Collins was so badly
hurt that he has since died.
Indiana County. Mr. David Boden,
near Shelocta, Indiana county, has three
ewes, which recently gave birth to ten lambs
two of them having three lambs each,
and the other having four lambs. This is
decidedly prolific, and beats any case of in
crease we have heard of for some time.
Announcement. Mr. John F. Rote de
sires to announce to the citizens of Clear
field and vicinity, that he has opened an Ice
Cream Saloon for this season, and will have
ice cream on hand every Saturday evening,
and as often during the week as he may
deem necessary. He has a good room, fur
nished for the accommodation of ladies. He
would also state that there will be no malt
liquors sold in his saloon during ice cream
season.
Corn Planting. As the season is al
ready far advanced, and but little corn hav
ing been planted, as yet, it may not be a
miss to throw out a hint in reference to the
selecting of seed corn. Our advice would
be: plant only the eaily yellow varieties, as
there is still abundant time for the matu
ring of such before the fall frosts, whilst
the varieties usually planted may not be so
fortunate as to escape the withering breath
of "Jack Frost." We hope that those in
terested will, at least, give our suggestions a
passing thought ; if they do not adopt them.
Lycoming County. We clip the follow
ing item the Williamsport Standard of
May 15th:. "Drowned. On Wednesday,
the sth inst., a young man whose name we
have not ascertained, and a young lady by
the name of Moore, of Clearfield county,
started form McWilliams' Hotel at Trout
Run, this county, to go to Lippencott's
mill in Rose Valley. The bridge spannin
Lycoming creek at this point is but one
plank wide, and in making the first attempt
to cross Miss Moore fell into the water, but
succeeded in getting to shore. A second
attempt proved fatal, as she again fell off
and was drowned. Efforts have been made
to recover the body, but up to our latest in
formation without success." ""
