In! Such is the exclamation that greets our ears almost hourly a truth which is leins realized by those who have to travel over our roads. A little rain, in addition to the snow now on the ground, will render ma ny of the roads in this county almost impas sible. So, look out for more mud ! FRrrr and Insects. It is said to be a rP, tested fact that if a hole be bored into i fruit tree, and filled with sulphur, it would jo infect the tree that no insect would live upon it, or disturb its fruit. It is easy to try it It is also said that tomatoes planted eluse to fruit trees will keep off the insects. Clarion Ahead. The Clarion Banner of 3Iari-h says : "The heaviest snow of the year fell on Thursday right and this I Friday) morning. It is snowing hard as we go to press, and there is not less than twenty inches of snow on the ground and 'still rising in the channel.' " More Sxow.. On Friday last, about five inches of snow fell nn this region, but most of it has again disappeared. Surely "win ter lingers in the lap of spring," b-.it as Old !1 is getting too. powerful for Old Boreas, the latter will soon have to surrender, for a K-aon, to the superior strength of the for mer. So mote it be. Going Up. We are informed that a gen-t'e-uin in this place, was last week offered one thousand dollars for several building lots in the suburbs of the borough. He refused jelling at the price, and several days there after he had an offer of fifteen hundred dol lars lor tbein.but did not sell a price which I.e. in our opinion, should have taken. Thore eenis to be a spirit of speculation 'road in Clearfield, which should not exist. Turn lots, at the prices referred to, are en tirely above their value, and if the prevail Y'.z speculative mania is persisted in it will lo immense damage to the future business rosperity of our 'town, in that it will drive l"h to seek places for investment else where, biMead.of drawing them hither. VvV hope that all property owners will give this matter their serious consideration, and tiiat they will so act as to induce the build in? up of the town of Clear5eld, and thus aid in advancing its business interests gen traily. - To Land Owners. Iteems there are many land titles in this State in an imper fect condition, which the State authorities intend to have perfected at an early day. S ine of these lands have been patented, but the fees having never been paid thereou the State holds a lien against them, s hilst in other ca-s patents have never issued. To enable theTurveyor General to perfect these titles, a bill has been introduced into the State Senate and will become a law, direct ing the etitr? of liens for all money due on lands, etc. The bill provides that the Sur veyor General shall calculate the amounts due on unpatented lands with interest from date of applicatiorrdr improvement, which wall be entered together with office fees, in a Commonwealth land lien docket, county duplicates of which shall De furnished to prothonotaries, and such aggregates shall be i Ken against delinquents, carrying interest of six per cent. , from date of entry ; and hen no return of survey has been made, if sach return is not made by the 30th of No vember, 1S6S, the land to be forfeited to the Commonwealth, and any party may make application for the same, and enter, if the survey is accepted, and it is made the duty "f the Surveyor General to accept such lat ter survey. Some six millions of dollars re due the State from this source. Now, too doubt there are lands in Clearfield coun ty, that are subject to these State liens, on count of imperfect titled. "Where these lands He, or in whose names the warrants ere issued, or who are the present owners, 15 not known. Therefore, it behooves all owners of lands, with as little delay as pos sible, to have a thorough investigation made into the character of the titles under which they hold--otherwise they may lose their lands. ". word to the wise is sufficient." Only think of it. A Glen Hope correspondent writes us: "The good effects of '-fishy" legislation is just beginning to le realized by our citizens. On last Wednesday, March 20th, two reliable citizens of our village, succeeded in catching ten or twelve very fine cod-fish in the eddv below Rakestraw & Arthur's sawmill dam. It is supposed that quite a number of the "same sort" are in the vicinity of the dam. If these fish should hold out, they will in some measure console us for our disappointment in the coal oil speculation." Vive la Fish. Conference. A Philadel phia dispatch of March 19th. says: "Ex Governor Johnston left the ofiiee of Collect or of Internal Revenue for the First Dis trict, this morning, under an order from Washington. There is great trouble in that office again. It is said that $100,000 are missing, and that nobody knows any thing about the rfatter." As Governor Johnston only took charge of the office on Saturday, it is inferred that he discovered the defalcation and immediately desired to be relieved of the ofiiee, I Spicy. The editor of an exchange in ",aVus u" appeal io nis subscribers who are in arrears to pay up says : "We hope they will 'settle' without delay. Not that we want the money oh no! Our ink is given to us, we steal our paper, and we win our printers' wages at 'seven up.' So it costs us nothing to carry on business.
