Jle&olved, That we will lend our influence and support to any one who will establish a temperance paper in our State, and we urge our Grand Lodge, atits approaching scs-iion, to estamisn one. This was amended, so as to anthorizfi the diflFerent counties to secure a column in each of the county papers to be devoted to the temperance cause, and as thus amended it was auoprea. Whereas, In its ineention and ' p.nrlv . - progress, t,ue temperance relorm was main ly a religious movement, and in all its his tory it has been greatly promoted by the christian ministry- and christian churches, therefore Rcsolcedt That this Convention invites, and expects ail good men and women to unite, and be active workers in the promo tion of the cause ; ; and it fieems to us not improper to look to the christian church to be again foremost in deviMug the means, and directing the agencies necessary to pro tect her membership and society from the evils of intemperance. Adjourned. S. A. Fulton, W.S. I. b. CrARDXEIt,V.C.T. J. S. 31. Bradley, D.D.G.W.C.T. This good one is told of Barnum, who helps run the Connecticut Legislature, as well as the New Vork, 3Iuseum. After the announceigent of the Senatorial vote in the House last Wednesday, May 22d, by which it appeared that seven lit publican votes were cast against General Ferryr contrary to the agreement made in caucus, Mr. Burr, of the Hartford Times, went up to3Ir. Bar num and said: "Well, we are raking out your party ; we have got out seven mem bers to-day." Yes," quoth Barnum, "the same number that were raked out of Mary Magdalene." Attempts at assassination, from political motives, threaten to become epidemic iu Europe. The recent attacks upon the Em peror of Russia and the King of Prussia nave been followed by another upon Count Bismark. . This last one was made by a young man, 22 years of age, a step-son of the well-known republican refugee in Lon don, Karl Blind. Count Bismark himself seized the would-be assassin, who, after be ing taken to jail, contrived to stab himself nine times in the throat, and died the next morning of his wounds. : c The inquest on the remains " of the late Preston King was concluded on "3Iay '22d; and the Coroner's Jury returned a verdict "that said Preston King carae to his death by jumping from the ferry-boat Chancellor Livingston into the North River and drowns ing, on the-13th of November, 1865, while laboring; r,under a state of temporary in sanity.!; - ... .. ; v There was a terrible storm at Rochester, New York, on the 19th, which did much damage. -' ' ' ".The Two Meis.'; ...'." The York True Democrat, in discussing the merits of the candidates now before the people of this State for the office of Gover nor, draws a parallel between Geary and Clyuier. " From the time that rebel cannon', says the J)emocrat, hreU upon our flag at Fort Sumpter, uutil the last rebel perished in the "hut ditch" of the defunct Confed eracy, both of these men were filling impor tant positions in the publio service. Gen eralGeary, with his two sons, was at the front risking his life to defend the honor of the Sag. 31r. Clymer was iu the Senate Cham ber, and by voice and vote was aiding the enemies ot his country more effectually than he could have done had lie donned the uni form and taken his place in the rebel ranks. He voted and acted with that party, that said the South was guilty of no crime in at tempting to destroy the government; that the jKwcr of slavery was a Constitutional prerogative, possessed by every.State ; that Mr. Lincoln was a tyrannical usurper, seek ing to subvert the Constitution and destroy liberty; that derided the soldiers, calling them "hirelings" and "mercenaries," and denying them the right to vote,, and tl en when the end was in lull view, had the bra zen effrontery to call the war a "lailure." The war was cither rip ht or wrong. It was a high .and holy struggle for the right of man, or it was the most stupendous and terrible crime that ever convulsed society. The government of the United States cither performed the most praise-worthy and glori ous act recorded in history, or it was guilty ot the most heinous and atrocious : wrong that was ever done.. If the South was justi fied iu her course, and the war upon our part was unjust then Mr. Clymer is a patriot, the lustre of whose loyalty is as the noon day sun. But it the Southern people had neither cau?e nor excuse for what they at tempted to-do, then the name of 31r. Cly mer and his associates will go down Ln his tory covered with a deeper and blacker in famy than that which attaches itself to the nanc of Arnold, and the tories of the revo lution. If the cause of the government was just, and the struggle a holy one, then the name ami lame or General ueary will be immortal. : His courage; daring and gallan-1 try, upon mauy bloody fields of the war for the Union, are written with a diamond peni upon the pages of history. Shall this gallant ! soldier be honored for the glorious deeds he J Las done in honor of freedom and the rights or humanity .Let the bauot-box answer n an overwhelming majority Tit the coming electiou. .' . . . . . . . , . j Reports have been received at Chattanoo gaof the murder, at Iteseca,Ga., of a Union man named Willis, on his way home from church with his wife. Six men, armed with guns, suddenly appeared on the roadside i and ordered him to halt. One villain level ed his gun, when Mrs. Willis caught the' hand of the assassin, and the ball passed over 31r. Willis's head. The rest immedi ately fired, all the phots taking effect, killing Willis at once. After cursing and abusing his wife, the murderers fled. .. In Overton county, Tennessee, last week,' some outlaws went to the house of 3Ir. Gun ter, took him to the wood, .stripped him, and severely whipped him. His daughter seized a hatchel, ru.shed to the spot and kill-"-" ed two of the ruffians. 3Ir. Gunter and his -daughter had to leave the, neighborhood. It is thought that Prussia and Italy are leagued to attack Austria, and that Napoleon is so-, cretly backing them. , . ' Gen. B. F.
