Angry worda are lightly spoken,
in a rash and thoughtless hour,
Brightest links of life are broken
By tbeir deep, insidious power.'
Hearts inspired by warmest feeling,
Ne'er before by anger stirred, :
: Oft are rent past human healing, '
By a single angry word.
Foison-drops of care and sorrow,
Bitter poison-drops are they ;
Weaving for the coming morrow
.'. Saddest memories of to-day.
Angry words oh, let them never
From the tongae unbridled slip,
- May the heart a best impulse ever
Check them ere they soil the lip.
Love is much too pure and hofy,
Friendship is 100 sacred far
For a momeut's reckless folly
Thus to desolate and mar. .
Angry words are lightly spoken.
Bitten st thoughts are rashiy stirred ;
Brightest links of life are broken .
- - By a single angry word.
How American Velvet is Made. The
machinery for the manufacture ol' American
velvet, was introduced iuto thU country by
the inventor, a Mr. llolt, of Cheshire, Eng
land, and its supeiioiity iu the matter of
rapidity is suid to he as rrcat us that ot'lhe
tuordei n raiiroaus over the slage coih sys
tem. The uietlfxl U u.s 1'j!iov: . Grooved
Lra&j rods or wires were placed under the
web which torui.t the pile, hecured by threads
woven into the warp. The weaver cuts the
thread by mean 01 & knife, held in the
hand, the b'.ade of whi.h slides alutig the
jrroove, dividiacr the pile into two row of
threads, thua giving a nap tr pile of the
depth of the rod iaserted. The manufac
ture, according to the patented method, is
accomplished by weaving two warps or
foundations, with a middle warp alternately
rising into the upper and lower, being e
cured by two shuttles moving atouce. The
knife moves horizontally, in the game direc
tion as the shut ilea, and the two warps and
the pile between are divided, and the naps
are cut into equal lengths. Two piled fab
rics the exact counterpart of each other
are thus made at one time. The shuttles
and knives are all impelled by the ordinary
motions of the power loom. The statement
that 110 picks or threadbare wade in a min
ute (or ne'irly two ever second) ' will give
fame idea of the rapidity of the manufacture.
A man with the patented machine can make
from fifty to sixty, yards per week, while
eight or ten yards would be a good week's
work for the same person should he make
use of the ordinary hand-loom.' The saving
ot labor by this process over the wire-weaving
method is estimated at from fifty to sev
enty per cent, while the fabrics are eaual
and in some sespects superior, to those of
foreign make. Ihe looms are adapted to
the manufacture of piled fabrics, such as
silk plush, since an article of this nature for
gentlemen's caps has become very popular
a a substitute for fur. ' Tartan,, or clan
velvets are also made. ' "' '
Losses of the South. Mr. Robert Ty
ler, of Virginia, has replied to the recent
letter of Commodore Maury in the London
Herald estimating the losses of the South
in the late war at a total 01 seven billions ot
dollars. Mr. Tyler entirely dissents from
this statement: and says the item of three
billions loss in emancipated slavers is ex
cessively high at least fifty per cent, above
actual damages. 1 he item of expenses of
the war independent of private obligations,
or in other words, an estimate of the Con
federate deht, at two billions of dollars, is
declared equally high. The destruction of
private property exceeds by twenty-ave per
cent home estimates, and as to the item of
ten millions or fifty millions of dollars for
five years as additional taxation for the
navment of the Federal war debt, this sum
being calculated as the result, at (6) per
cent, interest on one billion of dollars. Mr.
Tyler claims the loss is not to be regarded
as sucb, since it is to be partially expended
upon the Southern States in the adminis
tration of the Government, and he then fig-
ures up according to ni3 own premises trie
total loss of the South, at $3,000,000,000.
.The Baltimore Failure. The ; Balti
more American says that the failure of Mr.
J. P. Bayne, of that city, is associated with
facts which the national credit demand
should be made public Throughout the
war, he was the leader of the Baltimore
rebel clique, which devoted its .energies to
the depreciation of the Government . credit
and the enhancement of the price -of gold,
and was regarded by rebellious sympathisers
as a King of Finance. With these antece
dents and characteristics, he became posses
ed of unlimited control of a national deposi
tary, and actually used the money, of the
Government durinr the war to speculate
against its credit. . lie borrowed of the bank
$700,000, .withoat giving any Kecuri ty. The
American thinks the whole affair is a swin
dle, and calls for a rigid investigation into
the rules governing the operations of the
bank, and into the loyalty of its fScers.

While tre 1 Copperheads arc eclamorinf
alike lor the unconditional restoration of the
rebels to power and against the dfil rifihta
bill, no Union soldier can forget that scenes
like those described below, in a recent letter
to the Cincinnati Gazette, are transpiring :
'The white people of Augusta, as well as
other points South, having recently masie
Seat parade, in decorating the graves of
e rebel dead with flowers, while the graves
of the Union soldiers were pasted coldly by,
the colored people f Augusta determined
yesterday to repair the omisoion. Accord
ingly they assembled at one of their school
houses near the cemetery with flowers',
wreaths and banners.-' Their teachers, white
and black, accompanied them, and in pearia!
fnl procession they marched to deport their
offerings upon the graves of the nation'
dead. A more touching spectacle and one
which will appeal more forcibly to every bsi
man heart was seldom seen, but incredible
to tell, the procession was met at the ga$
of the cemetery, by the mayor of the pity
and a strong force of police j and "despite jr
monstrances of Capt Bryant, the entrea
ties of the teachers and tears of the poor ne
groes, was sternly refused admission." !
-There was never a time - in the history of
our country when, in the struggles of its
two leading parties, one was more clearly
right and the other more clearly wrong than
the present. Upon the triumph of the loy
al policj deH?nds not only, the welfare anJ
protection of the interests of the North and
the preservation of the puhlic credit, but
the regeneration of the South. The white
Unionists and the freediuen of that section
have everything to fear and nothing to hapo
from the re-entnrorwmcnt of the rebel lead
ers in power. We cannot ignore their
claims upon our friendship witlwut display
ing base ingratitude and unstatesrnanlike
disregard of the future. In shielding our
selves from the domination ot traitors we
are also shielding them. The animus of the
Copperhead organization is plainly to wreak
vengeance njon the men who quelled the
reMlion, and to wield all the political pow
er they can acquire in such a manner as will
most effectually puuish the faithful defend
ers of the Republic . But it is imposiWe
that an intelligent and patriotic people will
entrust the control .of the Government to
its enemies- 7 "' " """ - .
