A bloody riot occurred in Memphis,Tenn.,
on Tuesday evening, May 1st, between the
police and colored soldiers, growing out of
an attempt to arrest a white man, whom the
blacks determined to protect. One police
Juan was killed and three wounded. From
eight to ten negroes lost their lives, and sev
en were wounded. The riot was quelled by
the military. .
Oor. Hawley was inaugurated Governor
of Connecticut,on May 2d. In his address,
he took strong grounds in favor of negro
suffrage, and advised that it again be sub
mitted to a vote of the people ot the State.
With reference to Federal relations, he sup
ports the measures advocated and upheld by
the majority in Congress.
The War Department has issued a gener
al order to the effect that the President has
ordered that hereafter whenever offenses are
committed by civilians, they are to be tried
where civil tribunals are in existence to try
them. This order is not applicable to camp
Mlowers, etc.

Political Items.
1 A Washington dispatch says the Presi
dent has ordered pardons to be issued to all
North Carolinians who had applications or
petitions or file, and directed them to be
completed and sent to the petitioners. This
includes all the. petitions from that State ou
file in the office of the Attorney General
several hundred in number.
The feeling is growing in Congress that,
so far as the white population is concerned,
the desirable point to reach is the exclusion
of the rebel leaders from office, and permit
ting the masses to vote.
Maj. Gen. G. M. Dodge, i3 proposed as
a can didate for Congress, by the more decid
ed Republicans, in the 5th Iowa district.
Hon. J ohn A. Kasson is the present repre
sentative. t The nomination of Frank Blair as Col
lector of Internal Revenue, at St. Louis,
was rejected by the Senate, in executive
session, by a vote of 8 for to 21 against it.
tThe Representation of" the Southern
States iu Congress, in accordance with the
proposed amendment, would be fifty a re
ducti&n of twenty-five.
If It is understood that the Government
fully approves of the course of Commodore
Rodgers at the Spanish bombardment; of
Valparaiso. -
It is stated that Mr. Stanton favors the
Congressional plan of reconstruction, except
ing the clause disfranchising the rebel mas

collector of internal revenue in the Congres

The report of the Committee on Recon
struction ignores the question of suffrage
leaving that entirely with the several States.

Congressional nomination, in Crawford
county, at the Union primary election.

The first conviction fur treason which has
ever taken place in Tennessee has been ad
judicated at Daubridge, Jefferson countv.
The man's name is D. C. Williams, jr.
His punishment is fixed at 14 years in the
fctatc Penitentiary. -
Cougress has decided that none of the
forts, arsenals, military posts or naval sta
tions belonging to the L nited States shall
bear the name of a disloyal personage, or
m sny way be used to perpetuate the memo
ry ot a traitor.
A Washington dispatch says that theyel
low fever is raging on the gunboat Kear
sage at Madeira, and six men had already
died from the disease.
. Taking the ballot from a rebel, says the
Knoxville Whig, has the effect of extract
ing the stina liom a bee. It renders him
powerless for mischief.

the most eminent physicians, experiencing but

I did this because I used all kinds
of advertised remedies, and had found
them worthless, and some quite injurious; in fact,
I despaired of ever getting well, and determin
ed to use no remedies unless I knew of the ingre
dients. It was this that prompted me to use your
remedy As you advertised that it was compos
ed of bl-chit, ccbebs. and juniper rep.rirs. it oc
curred to me and my physician as an excellent
pomnination. and. with his advice, after an exam
ination of the article, and consulting a?ain with
the druggist. I conculuded to try it. I commen
ced its use about eightmonths ago, at which time
I was confined to my room. From the first bot
tle I was astonished and gratified at the benefi
cial effect, and arter using it three weeks, was a

full statement of my case at the time, but thought
mv improvement might only be temporary and
therefore concluded to defer and- see if it would
effect a perfect cure, knowing then it would be of
greater value to you end more satisfactory to me

I have not used any now for three
months, and feel as well in all respects
as I ever did.
