Jeekerson County. Joseph MoCul
jouh, of Pine Creek township, was killed
on the 24th April, and .Albert Riggs badly
injured, by the falling of a tree which, the
storm blew d5wn as they were passing
through the woods.

Ibth, the (welling house of L. K. McCul
louirh, of' Lawrence township, with most of
the furniture, bedding, clothing, etc., was
drstrjjed by fire. The fire originated in
the garret, and was accidental. Loss about
$1,200. No insurance.
Child Burnt. We learn that t little
girl of JohuC. Fergusou.of Ferguson towu
chip, was burnt so severely oue day last
week, by her clothes taking fire at a burn
ing bru-U heap on a clearing, that she died
alout .-ix hours after the occurrence. She
was aged atovit 4 or 5 years.
Hoi sf. and Barn Burned. We are in
formed that the house and barn, of Elam
PasMiiore. of Pike township, with all con
tents, were destroyed by fire on Sunday,
April, 2Jth. Iioss about $1,200. No in
surance. The fire originated in the house,

A NEW JcDGE. I. G. Gordon, Esfl., of
Br.mkville. has been appointed by Governor
Curtiii. Judge of the new Judicial District,
formed by the Loiislature during the ses
sion just closed. It comprises the counties
of Mercer and Venango, leaving Judge
famU'll the counties of Clarion, Jefferson
Forest. '

bly, the Scbool Directors of the county as
sembled in Convention "at the Court House,
in Cloavfivld, on Tuesday, May 1st, for the
Iirpns of -electing a County Superintend
:tnt for the ensuing three years. The Con
vention was called to order by C. B. Sand
ford, K., the county Snperintendant ; af
ter which D. W. Moore, Esq., was chosen
President f the Convention, and A C.
Tate and 11 J. Wallace. Secretaries.
On motion. C. B. Sandford, George W.
Snyder, rind A. R. Height, were nominated
as candidates. Upon a ballot being had
the vote stood as follows : Sandford 23.
Snyder 39, Height 9. Suyder having a ma
jority of all the votes cast was declared duly
elected.
On motion, the salary was then fixed at
$1,000; after which the Convention ad
journed. An Important Opinion. The Rev. An
drew Manship, of the Methodist Episcopal
Church, in his "Thirteen Years in the
Itinerancy," says "as far as earth is con
cerned, I know nothing so well suited to a
man'of limited means, who has a desire to
provide for his Household and leave them
something to live upon when he is gone,
a responsible, well regulated Life Insurance
Company, into which he agrees to pay an
annual amount within his reach ; the com
pany on their part agreeing to pay to hia
wife or children, a certain sum when he can
no longer go in and out far them. I have
seen the v.i low and the orphan childreu
gladdened in the hour of adversity by this
means. When we 6ee its good effects who

this place, is the agent of the Penn Mutual
Life Insurance company of Philadelphia,
which has a fund liable for losses of $1,500,

Crawford County. The extensive shoo
manufactory of -IL E. Winsor, at Me;id-
ville was destroyed by fire on iho night, of
the 23d April. This was the most exten
sive establishment in Western Pennsylva
nia, and turned out a vast number of wo
men's shoes. The loss is estimated at $45
000. Undoubtedly the work of lnceudlaries.
Anthony Probst, the murderer of the
Deering family, was convicted in Philadel
phia, on Saturday, April 28th, of murder
in the first degree. The Court adjourned
until Tuesday, May 1st, when the sentence
will le pronounced. The jury was out about
thirty minutes. -
Two skeletons were exhumed near De
troit, Michigan, recently, which proved to
be those of Indians. 1 he bodies had been
buried with the feet to the east, and just
above their heads there were tomahawks
and deer horns, placed across each other.
The Legislature of Tennessee (House) has
refused, by 40 to 18, to admit to seatsseven
members who resigned in order to break up
a quorum, and were reelected. By this
vote, they are declared ineligible to re-election.

The people of East Tennessee are moving
with great energy and unanimity for the
purpose of securing a separation from West
Tennessee, and the organization of a new
State government.
Senator Morrill has been directed by the
District Committee to report a bill granting
suffrage to educated property-owning citi
zens, soldiers and sailors of color in the Dis
trict.

Six Boston merchants have contributed
$5,000 each toward the new ball of Harvard
College, to be erected in memory of the grad
uates who fell in the late vcar.
In Michican, in tw enty-six counties heard
from, the Republicans have made net gain
of seventeen supervisors. That does not
look like disintegration.
A vine grower made $7,987 last year from
five acres ot island soil in Lake Fine. He
raised :i4,500 pounds of grapes, and made
G,000 gallons of wine. ,

The President has ordered the suspension
of the execution of five rebel guerrillas con
victed by court martial of murdering five
Union soldiers. - ,.
A man named Peter August Madison has
been arrested in Washington, supposed to be
the accomplice of Probst, the Philadelphia
murderer.
Judge Nelson, of the U. S. Circuit Court,
has decided that the surplus earnings of a
bank cannot be taxed as capital.
Flour is selling in Colorado Territory at
ten cents a poiyid.
