TEIP LIGHTLY.
Trip lightly over trouble.
Trip lightly over wrong ;
We only make grief double
- Uj dwelliing on it long. -Why
clasp woe's hands so tightly,
Why sigh o'er blossoms dead f ' '
Why cling to forms unsightly ?
Why not seek joy instead ?
Trip lightly over sorrow,
' Though all the days be dark,
The sun may shine to morrow, ',
And galty sang the lark ;
Fair hope has not departed
Though roses may have fled;
Then never be down-hearted,
But look for joy instead.
Trip lightly over sadness,
Stand not to rail at doom ;
Wre've pearls to string, of gladness,
On this side of the torn b.
Whilst stars are nightly shining,
And heaven is overhead,
Encourage not repining,
BuVJook for joy instead.

Tho unchanged, vindictive Rebel who

"The Peace Prodim at ion cf the Presi

action on his part. Is v, i!l he observed that
the legal effect of the proclamation is to
place the Southern, States in the i?anio atti
tude precisely toward the General Govern
ment that they occupied before the war, and
entitled to the same rights that they here
tofore enjoyed. Mr. Johnson is determined
to follow out this principle to its legitimate
conclusion, and to see to it that tie Southern
States are ho longer deprived ff these rights
by a factious majority in Congress."
The Peace Proclamation of tho President
was an act entirely within the scope of his
powers and duties. However wise or un
wise, timely or untimely, it is the Presi

a Proclamation should issue ; and we should
very deeply regret any attempt by Congress'

But the' rights of Congress in the premi

questionable, as those of the President ; and
neither must ignore or usurp those of the
other. Over and again has the President
officially set forth the' incontestable truth
that Congress must prescribe the conditions
whereupon the-States lately in revolt shall
be restored to all the rights and privileges
they so rashly, culpably repudiated. Those

if he desires the honest, heartv support of
the party, lot him seel his faith with works.
I visited Washington for the express
purpose uv seein the second Jackson. I
told him that tho Postmaster at the Cor
ners was opposin his polisy and aboosin him
continooally ; that it wez an outrage that
men holdin places under the administrashun
should not sustan the Administrashun. In
the name uv right I demanded a change.
I supposed to wunst that the posishun
would be offered to me, and after protsriu
a sufficient time that I 'did not want it and
would prefer the appointment uv some
more worthy man, 1 should accept it,
and go home provided for three years. Im
inagine my deep and unutterable disgust,
when he told me that he would invistigata
the matter, probably would make the change,
provided lie could Jind in the vicinity sonic

felt that in him we had no lot or part.
Our principles are uv a very comprehen
sive nature. We are willin to endorse An
droo Johnson, or any other man. We will
indorse his theories uv reconstruction, or
any man's theories. We are elastic like
Injy rubber. The boy f ho set a hen on a
hundred eggs, acknowledged to his maternal
parent that she couldn't kivcr 'em but re
marked he wanted to see the old thing
spread herself. We have that spreadin
capacity. We kin accomodate the preju
dices uv the people uv the varius localities.
In Connecticut we are singin "John Brown's
body lies moulderin in the grave,'-1, iii a
modretly loud tone, and supportin a Abliah
nist who voted for doin away, with slavery
in the - District of Columby and for the
Constitooshncl Amendment. In Kentucky
we are hangin men uv the John Brown style,
and mobbin all uv tho persuasion ut thf
Connecticut nominee. Sich a party uv
Erinciple party uv. sich adaptability kin
ev but one great central idee on which
there is no diversity uv ' opinion, and to
whi h all 6ther ideas is subordinate. That
idea is Post Office I and ef Androo John
son could be got rite on that rracstion, we'd
care not what case he required uv us.
We hev our arms around Androo wo
are hugjin him to our buzzums, but he haa

what we want, and we shfcl fling him off
shortly onlesshe changes his pohsy ia thia
