The Arab and Eis Serpents.
A Paris correspondent says : "I stopped
to see some of the numerous fhows, which
are in full ojjeratiou during tLe holiday?.
I found raylf -at lat within' a circle
where an Arab was lowing off with seven or
eight great eerpents. I wauted to turn and
fro away, but the crowd had become so great
that I found I could not ruove.and was oblig
ed to remain a witness of certainly one of
the most cunous and frightful si-ectaelea ev
er offered to the public. The snake charm
er was seated on the ground, after the fash
ion of his country, with his snakes all around
him ; two or three of them were or the mot-t
enormous size : almost as large as a full
grown boa. lie would take them up iu his
hands, let them wind around his legs, arms,
body, neck and head ; stick out their fork
ed tongues and kiss him on the hands, the
lips, the eye-lids, and present their heads or
taiL to him as he commanded tlem.
While the spectacle was rroeeding in the
most successful way one of the largest snakes
clipped off unnoticed by the Arab, or appa
rently so; and dragging itself along, got out
of the crowd, everybody, you may be sure,
giving him a clear space. Just out of the
circle two dogs were playing together. The
sernent no sooner espied them than he rais
ed nis head ; and in an instant was bu?y
winding himself around the body of one of
the unfortunate animals. The poor donlit
terally screamed with fright. It was like
the scream of ahunian being.
The Arab no sooner heard it and under
stood the cause, than he got up, went to the
spot, and without touching the serpent at
all. spoke a few words, and the creature in
stantly uncoiled itself slowly until it left the
dog free, and I assure, one of the canine
race never ran as fast as that dog did, as
soon as he got loose. The surprise of the
spectators of this scene knew no bounds, and
pieces of silver were literally showered into
the Arab's turban.
A Cheap And Good Smoke House.
A Western New York farmer "publishes
his plan c f a small, cheap an 1 good smoke
house, which, as it may contain some prac
tical hints for our own readers, we append
it:
No farmer should be without a good
smoke-house, and such a ime as will be fire
frool and tolerably secure from thieves,
'ifty hams can be smoked at one time in a
smoke-house seven by eight feet square.
Miue is six by seven, and is large enough
for most farmers. I first dug all the ground
out below where the frost would reach, and
filled it up to the surface with small stones.
On this I laid my brick floor, iu lime mortar.
The walls are brick, eight inches thick and
seven feet high, with a door on one side
two feet wide. The door should be made
of wood and lined with sheet iron. Tor the
top I put on joists, two by fbur,set up edge
wise, and eight and a half inches from cen
tre to centre, covered with brick and put on
a heavy coat of mortar. I built a small
chimney on the top in the centre, arching
it over and covering it with a single roof in
the usual way. An arch should be built on
the outside, with a small irtn door, to shut
it up, similar to a stove door, with a hole
from the arch through the wall of the smoke
house, and an iron garte over it. This arch
as much more convenient and better to put
the fire in, than to build a fare inside the
smoke-house, and the chimney causes a
draft through into the smoke-house. Good
corn cobs or hickory wood are the best ma
terials to make a smoke for hams. The cost
of such a smoke house as I have described
is about $20.
Interesting Physiological Pact.
An army correspondent writes: In tire
army and among returned soldiers, I have
noted one fact in particular, somewhat at
varience with the usual theories. It is that
light haired men of thi nervous, sanguine
type, stand campaigning better than the
dark haired men, of billious temperament.
Look throujrh a raw regiment, on its wav to
the field, and you will find fully one-half
or its members to be ot black hair, dark
skinned, big boned, billious type. See that
same regiment on its return for muster out.
and you will find that black haired element
has melted away, leaving at least two-thirds,
perhaps three-lourths,of the regiment to be
represented by red, brown and flaxen hair.
It is also noticed that men from the cities,
slighter in physique, and apparently at the
outset unable to endure hunger and priva
tion, stand a severe campaign much better
than men from agricultural districts. A
thin, pale looking dry good clerk will do
more marching and starving than many a
plow boy, who looks muscular enough to
take a bull by the tail and throtv him over a
stake and rider fence.
How Different Nations Eat.
The 3Ialdavian Islanders eat alone. They
retire in the most hinder parts of their
houses, and then draw down the clothes that
serve as blinds to their windows that they
may eat unobserved. On the contrary the
islanders of the Philipines are remarkably
sociable. Whenever one of them finds him
self without a companion to partake of his
meal, he runs till he meets with one, and
however keen his appetite may be, he ven
tures not to satisfy it without a guest The
tables of the rich Chinese shine with a beau
tiful Tarnish and are covered with silk car
pets very elegantly worked. They do not
make use of .plates knives and forks; every
guest has two little ivory or ebony sticks
which he handles very adroitly. A Kams
chatkan kneels before his guest : he cuts an
enormous sliee from a sea-calf : he crams t
entire into the mouth of his friend, furious
ly crying out "Tana ! " thete! and cutting
away what hangs about his lips, snatches
and devours it with avidity. .
A Fatal Mistake. The VeJttte, a Col
orado paper, says that two men wbo were
hanged near Gibson's Ferry, en route to
Montana, a few weeks ago, for having coun
terfeit gold dust in their possession, are now
believed to be wholly innocent. They had
received the dust in good faith from some
one else, thinking it to be genuine. The
-0s4 of .these unfortunate men should be
held up as a warning to all who would resort
to so desperate a remedy as that of lynch
law. . .
