RAFT DAB'S 100 n I c :4 A n llnftomau'is journal CLEARFIELD, PA., SEPT. 20, 1865. Col. Jacob M. Campbell. Referring to the efforts ot the copperhead organs to destroy the miltrary aiil mauJy character of the UBioiiCanli--i.itel.-r Survey or General, the Jo!iutovru Tribune says that the Leopard does not change his fpots nor tue JJetnoeratic party its tac-ties. xown right lying has always uvea one of the inain instrumentalities relieJ ujmju by the leader of that party to serin e success, and thoe lead ers win oomow, in the day of their extrem ity, forego their ancient prerogative. To magnify the merits of their own candidate for surveyor Geienil' thev have s uiuitane- ously and by evident prec mcert commence! lalseity the military record ot that candi date's superioroiSjer, Co!. Jacob M. Camp bell, one oft he best officers Pennsylvania gave to the Union Army for theupprJsion of a Democratic rebellion. We will not now reply to these fellows, but that a tissueofviie falsehoods may not go uncontardicted, we will state briefly the following facts: It is not trite, as alleged, that Col Camp bell resigned his commission in the army. He was wfrr oi under a general order rrom the war department, his teriut t service having expired, precisely as hundreds of other good olhcers have been honorably dis charged from theserriee. He could not hire longer continued in service us a Colonel hud he so elected, the regimental organization be ing broken. It is not true, as alleged, that Lieuten ant Colonel Linton led the Fifty-fourth in the battles of" Newmarket and Piedmont, lie was not even in the battle of Pieimon. CoL Campbell himself gallantly and well led bis own regiment in both the 'tattles named and in every other engagement with the single exception ot the affair at Snicker's Gap in which that regiment participated, during the whole period of his three years' service. After the battle of New Market, General Sigel personally complimented Col. Campbell and in sight ot tLe whole regi ment. It is not true, as alleged, that Lieut. Col. Linton was ever one day in command of the Fifty-fourth before Petersburg, or anywhere in that n iightor o h1. lie was n-1 in one of the many brilliant engagements which followed the inauguration of "Grant's splendid campaign against liichuiond. Telegraph. Quick "VTcrk. Boston, a city tolerably given to palaver, has just set to th; country a praisewnrthy example. Van Weimer, Nort hedge Shaw and Dolan were soldiers charged with Iru tally violating the person of Elizabeth Rates. Tha offeuce was com rj it ted on the 13tli of August. The offenders were arretted on the tjauie liisiht, A special session of the the Grand d ury was ordered and an indict ment found. The respondents were brousht to trial on the L'3d or" Augu-L The i.iul was commenced at 9 ocWk a. in. On ac count of the absence of witnesses flr the de fence, a recess was taken, and proceedings resumed at 10: 25 a. m. The Govcrnm ;nt rested its case at ,3 o'clock p. m , aud the Court took another recess of one h ur. The defense was then opened, and Ulteen wit nesses were examined and cros, ev.iminp.l The prisoners' counsel then occupied frty- ive minutes in closing M th ;nrv The j-'isirict .-iiorney io:.oveu. At s : -o p. m. Judge Russell begr.n to cl.arge the jury, and at the close allowed them a reasonable time for supper. At 10: L'O p. m. the jury came in with a verdict of guilty. Judge Russell, without aJjournm nt. at once sen tence 1 all the respondents to imprisonment at hard laW for life. The whole case a -rears to have occupied about twelve hours. There was no indecent hurry, no unfair ru ing on the part of the Government, no un merciful severity for the prisoners to com plain ot ; but the lawyers for the State and the lawyers for the culprits were kept well to their work, no time was wasted, the ex aminations went on rapidly, the Jude did not go home to go to bed a tor the fatigues of his summing up, but waited for the jury to come in ; and when these violators of wo man went back to their ceils, there was no uncertainty in regard to their fate to keep them awake. r.rrcRXixcTO Specie. The New York Tribune, in an article discussing the ques tion ot specie resumption, sets forth the way it is to be achieved, as follows : '-We pie sume that the President and Secretary of the Treasury will, at the meetum f Con cress, recommend the funding of our green backs, probably in a long loan, untaxed, at four or five per cent. And the moment the greenbacks kgin to take this direction, though at. the rate of not more than two or five mi I on per week, so as to render it morally certain that the bulk of them are to be absorbed, funded. retired. you will see the premium on gold fallimr like a stone. It will not wait for the conclusion of the process, but onlv to see that it is to be a success ; and it will be to almost every ones interest to bring it to a speedy close." TheRiohts of Colored Men ix Ym GINIA. Tie Alexandria Va.1 Journal says: In the County Court of this county, recently, it was decided, in accordance with the eighth section of the Bill of Rights, that colored men are entitled, in all capital or criminal prosecutions, to a trial by jury The six'h section of the Bill of Rights-gives to colored men the right to vote, and reads as follows : "That all elections ought to be free, and that all men giving sufficient evidence of common interest with and at tachment to the community, have the right, of suffrage, and c.wnot be taxed or deprived of their property for public use without their consent or that of their representatives so elected nor bound by anj law to which they have not in like manner assented for the public good."
