THE SEWS.
We learn from Mexico, by way of Ha
vana, that the attack on Matamoras by the
Republicans Lad proved a failure, a rein
forcement of the foreign legion having arriv
ed and turned the struggle in favor of the
imperalists. NegTette fell back upon Mon
terey. Mexico appears to be in a state of
great confusion. Bands of guerrillas infest
many districts and keep the country in ter
ror. Frequent encounters between the for
eign troops and Republicans have taken
phee, resulting generally in the defeat of
the latter.
- It seems to be shown upon satisfactory
evidence that Dr. Blackburn, the hideous
devil of yellow fever notoriety, did actually
introduce that pestilence into Newbera la.-t
summer. A great number of women and
children were thereby murdeied: and yet
this Blackburn walks the earth, and himan
being3 speak to him, and feed him, and wait
upon his orders, and the earth swallows
neither him nor them,
is indeed past.

It b stated by a Montreal paper that the
Southern rebels have ten millions of dollars
deposited in bank in that city. -
The municipal election held in Washing

Democratic ticket
