A Slight Difference. Everybody
Lnow3 ere this that the much vaunted supe
riority of the Southern chivalry is a myth,
that its glory is departed, or rather shown to
be nothing more than tinsel gtttter. Yet we
were not prepared for the folJWving unkind
cut, perpetrated by a 'Becket of the Mu
Beum :
''Sam, are yon one of the Southern chiv
alrv?" "No, raassa. Ise. ore ob de soalern
fhovelry: I shovelled dirt at Dutch Gap
Canal." ;
'An Iowa paper Fays that a lady near
Burlington, in that State, on marrying the
man of her choice recently, found herseit to
be sister-in-law to her father, aunt to her
brothers, sister to her uncle, daughter to her
erandfather, and great aunt to her own chil
dren. That must be a terrible family to
marry into.
A youngster while perusing a chapter in
Genesis, turning to his mother inquired
whether the people in those days "used to
do sums on the ground." lie accounted
for hb question by reading the passage,
"And the sons of men multiplied upon the
face of the earth."
I clasped her tiny hand in mine ; I clas-
Eed her beauteous form ; I vowed to shield
er from the wind, and from the world's
cold storm. She set her beauteous eye on
me; the tears did wildly flow; and viih her
little lips she said, "Confound you, let me
go?" , ,
A Wisconsin man has been lodged in
jail for getting up one night, not long ago,
and drowning two of his son, seven and
ten years old. He excased his crime by
saying he expected to go to hell himself, but
wanted to gee a place in Heaven for his chil
dren. The Long Robe Ruffled. "Silence !
silence in the Court," exclaimed an irritated
judge at a country assize; "is it not mons
trous that you will not keep silence? This
very morning we have decided a dozen ca
ses, and not heard one of them!"
Little three-year old Mary was plajing
very roughlr with the kitten carrying, by
the tail. Her mother told her that she
would hurt pussy. "Why, no, I wont,"
said she, "I'm carrying it by the handle!
