The Weather. Dating the past week
were favored with tolerable fair winter
vreather. On Wednesday evening last, the
snow had reached a depth of six or eight
,nche.-, and bedding was tolerable good.
But on Sunday and Monday of this wwk.
the iir moderated very much, which; with
tome ram, caused the greater portion of the
Sii-ivr to disappear. On Tuesday, however,
tiie aunosphere got colder, and this morning
(T.Veuuesday)'smne snow fell.
No 1'aper Next Week. We have con
cluded not to issue a Journal next week, for
various reasons. We have broken some of
the fixtures about our press, which will re
quire several days to make the necessary re
pairs, and as we are still short of hands are
unable to do so and put out a paper. Be
fci ies, we have several rollers to make, and
a number of other things to put in order
iu the office. We hope our readers will re
ceive this explanation as a Mt'lirient apolo-
for the non-appearance of the Journal
next week.

Eighteen Deserters Arrested and one Killed
About two wicks siticethe lGthllegiment
of the V eteran Deserve corps arrived at
Vliilitteburr, which ha been luade a milita
ry post on account of its being the terminus i
of the Kail-road. Ihe object in .sending
these troops into this section of the State
was to arrest deserters and drafted men who
failed to report.
Accordingly on Tuesday evening the 13th,
Major Goebel sent a detachment tf fifty or
sixty men, under command cf Capt. South
worth, to Knox township in this county, to
arrest a gang of deserters, who, he had learn
ed, would be at Tom Adams' house on that
evening. Part of this force was in sleds,
and the remainder mounted. A littb after
midnight they arrived at the place designa
ted, and at once surrounded tiro house.
The cavalry being properly posted, the in
fantry at once advanced to the door, when
some one within cried out, ''The soldiers
are here!" Capt. South worth at once rush
ed into the house with his men and arrested
all the inmates nineteen of whom proved
to be deserters and drafted men. Tom Ad
ams a notorious deserter and leader of the
gang, was on the second floor at the time.
On going to a window he saw the soldiers
outside, and at once fired with a musket at
them, (killing a young man named Kcad,
from Chueuio. t, New Ilamshire, a buck
shot having struck him in tnehcad,) and
then endeavored to make his escape by
jumping from the window to the ground.
A volley from Uiomj iosted outside, however,
brought him suddenly to a '"halt" several
balls having pierced his body, lie lived
but a few- minutes after he was shot -thus
having forfeited his life iu a most iniqui
tous ause. The foregoing are the facts, as
near as we have been able to obtain them.
Among those arrested are Stephen A.
Durbin of the 55th Pa. Vol., Daniel Tiiu
olin of the S2d. Win. Drown of the ,55th,
and Daniel Drant of the 184th, all desert
ers : and Dr. J. J. Kiise aud George Nagle,
deserters from the draft. The names of
the others who were arrested in Kuox town
ship, we have failed to procure.
Thio affair, which must be regarded as
the legitimate offspring of the spirit of law
lessness which has been engendered in this
county by the bad advice aud iuflamatory
harrangues of designing demagogues, who
could just as readily have directed their fol
lowers in the right as in the wrong way, ought
to, if it does uot, satisfy the misguided men in
cur midst that the Government has the
power to enforce the laws, and that its iron
grasp will be laid upon all w ho attempt to
resist its authority. We hope for the cred
it of the county at large, but more particu
larly for the sake of the law-abiding portion
of our citizens, that we may not again be
called upon to record such a lamentable e
vent. Should any other troubles of the a
love character arise, those vho bring them
upon themselves, will do so with a full
knowledge of the fearful consequences they
must inevitably incur, aud the fault will rest
entirely with themselves.
