Disgraceful. Several street, fights have
occurred lu re during the last week. These
disgraceful scenes on our streets are becom
ing entirely too frequent. The Uorough au
thorities should be on the ahirt to arrest ev

Another Oil Company. A company
has been organized to bore for oil at St. Ma

300 feet, about three years ago, and then a
bandoned. The same company has re-or-jranized,
and is engaged in boring the same

Shooting. Scarcely a day goes by that
we Jo not hear the firing of guns or pistols
within -the borough limits. This is all
wrong, contrary to law, and annoying to

it ought, in all cases, to be vigorously im-po-ed.

The mother was arrested but owing to the

investigation.
The Oil Fever. ' Oil' on the brain" is
getting to be a common complaint in this lo
cality. We meet with people every day
who are fully persuaded that oil will be
f'"iuid here in abundance. Large numbers
ot'Ieases are leing taken, and the land will

"heir faith by their works." We sincerely

Tir"iiuble investments.
Fatal Accident. A former citizen of

at Milesburg Ilailroad crossing in Centre

Wagon, was struck by the Locomotive, one

U. S. 7-30 LOAN.
The Secretary of the Treasury gives notice that
subscriptions will be received for Coupon Trea.su
ry Notes, payable in three years from August 15,
16(51. with semi-annual interest at the rate of sev
en and three-tenths per cent, por annum princi
pal and interest both tj be paid in lawful money
These notes will be convertible at the option of
the holder at maturity, into six per cent, gold
bearing bonds, payable not less than five nor more
than twenty years from their date, as the Govern
ment mayelect. They will be issued in denomi
nations of 5j0, $100. S500, Sl.000 and S5.000, mid
subscriptions must bo for fifty dollars or some
multiple of fifty dollars.
The notes will be transmitted to the owners
free of transportatio a charges as soon after the
receipt of the original certificates of deposit as
they can ba prepared
As the notes draw interest from August 15th,
persons making deposits subsequent to that date
must paj the interest accrued from date of note
to date of deposit.
Parties depositing twenty-five thousand dollars
nd upwards for these notes at any one time will
be allowed a commission of ouc-qnartcr of one
per cent., which will be paid By the Treasury
Department upon a receipt for the amount, certi
fied to by the officer with whom the deposit was
made. No deductions for commissions must be
made from the deposits.
Special advantages of this Loan.
It is a National Savings Bank, offering a high
er rate of interest than any other, and tub bkst
seci hitv. Any sivings bank which pays its de
positors in U. S. Notes, considers that it is paying
in the best circulating medium of the country,
and it cannot pay in anything better, for its own
assets are either government securities or in notes
or bonds payable intgovernment paper.
It is equally convenient a a temporary tr per
manent investment. The notes can always be
sold for within a fraction of their face and accu
mulated interest, nnd are the best security with
banks us collaterals for discount.
Convertible into Six per cent. f-2Q
Gold Bond. In addition to the very liberal in
terest on the notes for three years, this privilege
of conversion is now worth ahout three percent,
per annum, for the current rate for 5-2(1 Bonds is
not less than mne pek cent, puemiitm, and before
the war the premium on six per cent. U. S. stocks
was over twenty percent. It will " be seen thr t
the actual profit on this loan, at the present ion -ket
rate, is not less than ten per cent, per a nnii o,
Its exemption from State and Muni-
ir-t. Taxation. But aside from all the advanta
ges wo have enumerated, a special Act of Con
gress exempts all bonds and Treasury notes from
local tHxation. On the average, this exemption
is worth about two per cent, per annum, accord
ing to the rate of taxation in various parts of
the country.
It is believed that no securities offer so great
inducements te lenders as those issued by the gov
ernment. In all other forms of indebtedness, the
faith or ability of private parties, or siock compa
nies, or seperate communities, only , is pledged
for payment, while the whole property of the
country is held to secure the discharge of all the
obligations of the United States.
While the government offers tho most liberal
terms for its Loans, it believes that the very
strongest appeal will be to the -oyalty and patri
otism of the people.
Duplicate certificates will be issued for all de
posits. The party depositing must endorse upon
tho OKiuiNALcertificate the denomination of notes
required, and whether thev are to be issue! .in
blank or payable to order. Yb.en so endorsed it
must be left with the officer receiving the deposit,
to be forwarded to the Troasury Department
Subscriptions will be received by the Treasurer
of the United States, at Washington ; the several
Assistant Treasurers and Designated Depositaries,
and by the
First Nations' Bank of Altoona,
and by all National B .nk3 which are depositaries
of publio money, an 1 all rbspbctablb banks
and bankers throughout the-country will gira ;
