HOSTETTERS'
CELEBRATED
STOMACH. BITTEBS,
A pure and powerful Tonic, Corrective and
Alterative ol wonderful efficacy ia
disease of the
Stomach, Liver and Bowels.
Cures, Dyspepsia, Liver Complaint, Headache,
General Debility, Nervousness, Depression of
Spirits, Constipation, Colic, Intermittent
Fevers, Cramps and Spasms, and all
Complaints of either Sex, arising
from Bodily Weakness whether inherent in the
system or produced by special causes.
Nothing that is npt wholesome, genial and re
storative in its nature enters into the composition
of Hostetter's Stomach Sitters. This popular
preparation contains no mineral of any kind, no
deadly botanical element; no fiery excitant ; but
it is a combination of the extracts of rare balsam
ic herbs and plants with the purest and mildest
of all diffusive stimulants.
It is well to be forearmed against disease, and,
so far as the human system can be protected by
human means against maladies engendered by an
unwholesome atmosphere, impure water and oth
er external causes, Hostettcr's Bitters may be re
lied on as a safeguard.
In districts infested with Fever and Ague, it has
been found infallible as a preventive and irresis
tible as a remedy and thousands who resort to it
under apprehension of on attack escape the
scourge; and thousands who neglect to avail
themselves of its protective qualities in advance,
are cured by a very brief course of this marvel
ous medicine. Fever and Ague patients, after be
ing plied with quinine for months in vain, until
fairly satured with that dangerous alkaloid, are
not unfrequently restored to health within a few
days by the use of Hostetters Bitters.
The weak stomach is rapidly invigorated and
the appetite restored by this agreeable Tonic. and
hence it works wonders in eases of DL-pepsia and
in less confirmed forms of Indigestion. Acting as
a gentle and painless apperient, as well as upon
tne liver,. it also invariably relieves the Constipa
tion superinduced by irregular action of the di
gestive and secretive organs.
Persons of feeble habit, liable to Nervous At
tacks, Lowncss of Spirits and Fits of Languor. find
prompt and permanent relief from the Bitters.
The testimony on this point is most conclusive,
and from both sexes.
The agony of Billious Colic is immediately as
suaged by a single dose of the stimulent, and by
occasionally resorting to it,the return of the com
plaint may be prevented.
As a General Tonic, Hostetier1 Bitters produce
effects which must be experienced or witnessed
before they can be fully appreciated. In cases of
Constitutional Weakness, Premature Decay and
pebility and Decrepitude arising from Old Age.
it exercises the electric influence. In the conva
lescent stages of all diseases it operates as a de
lightful invigorant. When the powers of nature
are relaxed, it operates to re-enforce and re-establish
them.
Last, but not least, it is the only safo Stimulent,
being manufactured from sound and innocuous
materials, and entirely free from the acid ele
ment present more or less in all the ordinary
tonics and stomachics of the day.
The immense increase ia the sale of Ho tuttcr's
Bitter, both at home and abroad, during tho past
year proves that the world, while it obeys the
Scriptural injunction to '-try all things."' only
''Holds fast to that which isgDod."' Spurious
preparations, like poisonous firngi. are continual
ly springing up. but their character is soon dis
covered, and they are "flung like worthless weeds
away." On the other hand, a great antidutc that
performs all it promises, and even more than its
proprietors claimed for it on i;s introduction, is
-not for a day, but for all time."'
No family medicine has been so universally. and.
it may be truly added, deservedly popular with
the intelligent portion of the communitr, hs Hos
tetter's Bitters.

Many are aware of the cause of their suffering,

From Rev. J. Nricton Browa, D. D. Editor of
the Encyclopedia of Religions Knowledge.
Although not disposed to favor or recommend
P&tent Medicines in general, through distrust of
their ingredients and effects ; I yet know of no
sufficient reasons why a roan may not testify to
the benefits he believes himself to have received
from any simple preparation in the hope that he
miy thus contribute to the benefit of others;'
I do this the more readily in regard to Hoof
land's German Bitters, prepared by Dr. C. M.
Jackson, of this eity, because I was prejudiced a
gainst them for many years, under the impres
sion that they were chiefly an alcoholic mixture.
Iam indebted to my friend Robert Shoemaker,
Esq., fur the removal of this prejudice by proper
tests, and for encouragement to try them, when
suffering from great and long continued debility.
The use of three bettles of these Bitters, at the
beginning of the present year, was followed by
evident relief, and restoration to a degree of bod
ily and mental vigor which I had not felt for six
months before, and had almost despaired of re
gaining. I therefore thank God and my friend
for directing me to the use of them.
Philad'a., June, 23, 1361. J. Nkwtox Brows.
PARTICULAR AOT1CE.
There are many preparations sold under the
nam ot Bitters. put up in quart bottles, compoun
ded of the cheapest whiskey or common rum. cos
ting frci 20 to 40 cents per gallon, the taste dis
guised by Anise or Coriander Seed.
This class of Bitters has caused and will contin
ue to cause, as long as they can be sold, hundreds
to die the deaih of the drunkard. By their uso
the system is kept continually under the influ
ence of Alcoholic Stimulants of the worst kind, the
d.isire for Liiuor is created and kept up, andtbe
result is all the horrors attendant upon a drunk
ard's life and death.
For those who desire . and will h ive, a Liquor
Bitters, we publish the following receipt. Get
One Bottle lloojtand s (fermnii Bitters and mix
with Three tjnarts of Good Brniuly or W hitkcy.
and the result will be a preparation that will far
estel in medicinal virtues and true excellence
any of the numerous Liquor Bitters in the mark
et, and will cost much leis. You will have all
the virtues of Hoofland's Bitters in connection
with a good article of Liquor.at a much Ies price
than these inferior preparations will cost you.
ATTENTION, SOLDIERS
AND THE FRIENDS OF SOLDIERS.
We cull the attention of all having relations or
friends in the army to tbttfact that -Hoop i.wn's
German Bitter"' will cure nine tenths of the dis
eases induced by exposures and privations inci
dent to camp life. . In the lists, published almost
daily in the newspapers, on the arrival of the
sick, it will be noticed that a very large propor
tion are suffering from debility. Every case of
that kind can be readily cured by Hoofland'sGer
man Bitters, Diseases resulting from disorders
of the digestive orgacs are speedily removed. We
have no hesitation in stating that, if these Bitters
were freely used among our soldiers, hundreds of
lives might be saved that otherwise will be lost..
. Wc call particular attention to the following re
markable and well authenticated cure of one the
nation's heroes, whose lite, to use his own lan
guage, '-has been sited by the Bitters :'
Pailat)elphia, August 23rd, 1S52
THexnr. Jones ic Evmx. Well, gentlemen, year
noonana s uerman Letters has. saved my life.
There is no mistake in this. It is vouched for
by numbers of my comrades, some of whose names
are appended, and who were fully cognisant of
all the circumstances of my case. I am. and
have been tor the last four years, a member of
Sherman's celebrated battery, and under the im
mediate command of Capt. R B. Ayros. Through
the expo sure attendant upon my duties, I was
attacked in November last with inflammation of
the lungs, and was for seventy-two days in the
hospital. This was followed by great debility,
heightened by an attack of dysentery. I was then
removed from the White House, and sent to this
city on board the Steamer "State of Maine,"from
which I landed on the 2Sth of June. Since that
time 1 have been about as low as any one could
be and still retain a spark of vitality. For a
week or more I was scarcely able to swallow any
thing, and if I did force a morsel down, it was
immediately thrown up again.
1 could not even keep a glass of water on my
stomach. Life could not last under these circum
stances; and. accordingly, the physicians who
had been working faithfully, though unsuccess
fully, to rescue me from the grasp of the dread
Archer, frankly told me they could do no more
for me. and advised me to see a clergyman, and
to make such disposition of my limited funds as
best suited me. An acquaintance who visited me
at the hospital. Mr. Frederick Steinborn. of Sixth
below Arch Street, advised me, as a forlorn hope,
to try your Bitters, and kindly procured a bottle.
From the time I commenced taking them the
gloomy shadow of death receded, and I am now
thank God for it. getting better. Though I have
taken but two bottles, I have gained ten pounds,
and I feel sanguine of being permitted to rejoin
my wife and daughter, from whom I have heard
nothing for eighteen months : for. gentlemen, I
am a loyal Virginian, from the vicinity of Front
Royal. To your invaluable Bitters I owe the cer
tainty of life which has taken place of vague fears
to your Bitters will 1 owe the glorious privi
lege of again clasping to my bosom those who are
dearest to me in life.
Very trujp yours, Isaac Malose.
We fully concur in the truth of the above state
ment.as we had despaired of seeing our comrade,
Mr. Malone, restored to health.
