Their rear anc" flanks have been harressed
very much. At this place they abandoned
and burnt thir.y wagons. Since I have been

Kimrston. In their haste, they had not
time to destroy the railroad. It is not ne-ces-arv
to say anything more about tfie
movements ot the army, as j'ou will have it
before this reaches you only that the army
is very enthusiastic: in tms lorwara move

that "last ditch.'' It is evident when
they could not whrj us in the defiles of the

the war is nearly over. How do those reb

used up. ' '
1 have otten heard p:o-siavery men boast
of the southern States aaid their institutions,
but I am unable to "see it." The major
ity of the people soem to ue living m igno
rance. It is plain to be seen that slavery is
a turse, and it is timeit is wiped out. There
seems to be no enterprise among the peo
ple, their attention has evidently been the
negro. The houses are nearly all only one
storv, built of hewn logs with either boards
or clapboards nailed over the space on the in

They commonly have two doors which are
ojhjii in daj-light and afford sufficient light.
The roofs are clapboard. I have seen only
about n half dozen good houses in this State.
This country is well watered, but the citi
zens do not "seem to use much, of it. Their
clothing looks as if it had not been washed
for weekfv They live apparently in the
roughest kind of backwoods style.
, Fruit will be plenty. Rye is in bloom and
corn about six inches high. On the morn

Tobacco containing lOOlbs each, secreted in
the woods dose by onr camp, near the

through the Divisions, and answered a very
good purpose, for nearly airtbe men were
out and they had not leen accustomed to

Late rains have materially improv
ed the crops in . this section, and.
had a favorable influence on vegeta
tion generally. The planting of
corn was delayed by tlx; wet weath
er but with few exceptions it was
planted in time to make a full corp,
and is now growing. finely.-' The
wheat, which by no means promis
ed well early in the spring, has re
vived from its yellow drooping
state, and except when it was ab.-o-'
lutely killed out by the severity of
the last winter frosts, it is looking
well and will no doubt produce an
average yield. With the exception
of peaches, the fruit crop will be
abundant. The apple trees are lit
erally loaded with fruit, and the late
cherries, plums, and other fruits
promise a splendid yield. :
. Provost Marshal General Fry, in
answer to the inquiry as to the
length of time to which the 'pay
ment of commutation money ex
empts from liability to service, re
plies that the language of tha law
is plain. The law says: "If anv
drafted person shall hereafter pay
money tor the procuration i a
substitute, under the provisions of
th act to which this is an amend
ment, such payment of money shall
operate only to relieve such person
from draft iu filling that quota. "
If it should be necessary to make
several drawings of names in order
to fill "that quota" that is to sav.
the quota already assigned the
person paying commutation money
will be exempt on account of such
pavmeut from all the drawinsrs to
fill " that quota" made subsequent
to the one in which he paid the
commutation.
Tlie Cleveland Nominees.
We learn by our daily exchanges
that a Convention of se-'Z-coiftitu-tad
"delegates" met at Cleveland
hist week, and nominated John C.
1'remont lor President, and John
Cochrane lor Vice President
both from New York. The "del
egates who participated m that
Convention appear to belong to no
particular party and have no fol
lowers. "How the "delegates" were
appointed, and where some of them
are from, no one knows. For ex
ample, the Examiner, a first class
paper published in Lancaster city
says, that Lancaster county was re
presented by two persons in that
convention, and upon inquuy, tne
ditor could not . find a man who
knew the "delegates" or ever heard
of them.
Such being the status of the
Cleveland convention, no harm need
be apprehended tiom its uoings.
The whole thing appears to have
seen instigated by a tew dissatisfied
politicians,; backed up and encour-
iged by the " Copperhead leaders,
and hence is only calculated to
ilay into the hands of the semi-
secessionists of the North and en
courage the je,bels who are trying
to destroy the uovcrnment ot the
United States.
We have always deemed John
C. Fremont too pure a patriot to
lay into the hands of the enemies
of the Union. But if he accepts
this nomination from the rump
Convention -.which '.assembled at
Cleveland, he certainly will fall in
.. m ... . ..r-i.
our estimation. Ao true, patriot
will, in times like the present, per
mit -himself to be made-t lie scape
goat of Copperheadism in their ef
forts to. defeat the only true Union
nartv in the United States. ut
we do not fear the result, even if
le accepts the nomination, tor a
party without voters can accom
plish .nothing, ana suen seems 10
be the cas? in this iristance and
hence we have nothing to appre
hend from the nominees ot the
Cleveland Convention. I he candi
date ot the Union party, be he
whom he mayr will undoubtedly be
elected in spite of Secession sym
pathizers, Rebels and disorganizing
politicians. The people have so
decreed.
The Democratic Convention,
which met at Indianapolis Satur
day, denounced Governor Bram
lette, of Kentucky, scouted the i
dea of giving him a place on the
Democratic Presidential ticket.and
repudiated the claims of the Ken
tucky '"Conservatives" to seats in
the Chicago Convention.
