The rains during the past week have raised the streams to a good raiting stage, and quite a large number of rafts have pass ed this place, on their way to mar ket. Wanted a boy, 10 or 17 years of age, to learn the printing busi ness: One who can read and t-pell well, and of industrious and steady habits, cart obtain a situation by applying soon, at the Journal office. We learn that Rev. GardnerA. C. Finney; II. B. Swoope, and John McGaughey, have gone east to aid in taking care of our wound ed and sick soldiers. They merit the thyrrks of the community for any assistance they may render to our brave and disabled "boys." The War News. We devote a great portion of our space, this week, to a detailed and connected accouut of the great battle'which has been fought between General Grant's army and the Rebel army under Lee. An account of the fighting up to Tuesday will be found on the first page. Man Drowned. We hae been informed that a young man about 21 years of age, and whose name is suppose.! to be Jacob Weaver and a resident of Bradv township, was accidentally drowned, on Sun day, Mav 15th, in attempting to jump on a raft at Big Tinker rock, :n a raft at Big Tinker rock, Karthaus. The pilot, Mr. w Davis, who was running teiow Andrew the raft, on seeinr the young man fall into the water, called to a little boy and girl named Sankey, who wre a short distance off, to hasten to his relief. On reaching the wa ter' j edge they caught the stid floating man with a pike-poie and drew him ashore by which time the children's mother also arrived an 1 assisted them in taking the body up on the river bank. Al though the man had riot sunk, j'ct life had fled before he was got a shore. The little boy and girl mer it much praise for the promptness with which they proceeded to the relief of the drowning man ; in deed, they acted so' heroically, that the men who were on the raft, on returning to the place, rewarded them quite liberally for their efforts to fave a fellow man from a watery grave. A "Word about the Battle. Tt should be borne in mind by the people that Gen. Grant's vic tory over the rebels has not been gained without the loss of a large number of brave men. The reb el leaders realizing the waning of their nefarious cause have hazard ed much on the result of this bat tle: The heavy losses sustained by Our fioble army attest the fierce ness with which the rebels entered the fight well knowing that a vic tory in favor of the Union army would 1h; the death-knell to their pseudo Confederacy. Yet, it must not be taken for granted that this will be jt he end of tr.6 contest. Nay, we believe, that other and despe rate battles will yet have to be fought; but the ultimate triumph of our arms, and the re-establishing of the authority of the Feder :l Constitution rjver th rebellious States will be the final result. To this end, let tile friends of the Constitution and the Uriion stand firni; Jiet them uphold and strength en the hntds tif the 'National Gov ernment and encourage our bravt! men in the field, and victory will crown their efforts. Then the Con stitution will be maintained, tbeU nion saved, and the cansd of Free dom more firmly established in the United States, and strengthened throughout all lands. IT. . Sanitary Commission. Washington Tuesday, May 19, 18G4. The United States Sanita ry Commission sent this morning to Aquia Cre"ek , a steamboat which had been previously chartered and loaded with seventy or eighty tuns of hospital stores ; also 'a barge loaded with wagons and horses for transporting these supplies to Fred ericksburgor elsewhere. With the steamboat and barge went sixty re lief agents and nurses, all carefully trained for the work. By "feeding stations' ' at various point? the Com mission hope to meet the most ur gent jie'ed.
