CLEAHFIELD, DEC. 2, 1863.
Eebel Account of a Federal Baid.
A, Uuntsville (Ala.-) correspondent of the
Montgomery Mail, giving report of a recent
Federal expedition into that region says :
"Limestone and most of Madison counties
were completely scoured and wept clean of
hores and mules, cattle, shecp, pouItry, hogs,
meat, flour, &c. Two or three thousand hor
ses and moles, were taken iu these counties
citizens, farms, plantations, &c. thoroughly
stripped. The loss to this section is very
heavy, and the injury tar greater than wo ev
er have experienced, for we are now less able
to bear it. Before wo have lost of our abnn
dance this time nearly all o our working
stock. We havo had tbfc year twenty-one
visits from them. Stanley's big raid in July
swept off largely of slaves, horses, tuules,&c,
and so did others. But we have patched up
matters again, rigged up old wagons, new
teams, &c. This time all has been swept off,
and our people feel as if it '.s useless to try to
fix op again, even with old wagons, broken
down mules and horses, as all may again soon
be taken by another raid. We have not e
nough left now to haul and plough with, and a
fine riding or harness horse in the hands of w
citizen is a rarity, and milk cows are worth
as much and more valued than negroes."
Kentucky Rebels. The Frankfort, (K.,)
Commonwealth baa the following forcible re
mark on Kentucky atfairs : "How can the
Federal authorities expect recruiting to go on
in Kentucky, when they permit the State to
be ready, upon the approach ot a rebel army,
to prove more troublesome and dangerous
than ever. The meanest rebels who figured In
the Invasion last year, were those who had
been treated most leniently. Rebels have
been permitted to return, who aided in tear
ing the star and stripes from our State Capi
tol, and trampled the flag in the dust; and
who, when here, were most violent and vin
dictive. Union men can't attord to leave
their homes, when such men are left behind
to do mischief. This indiscriminate return
"of rebels should be stopped.
Proof. of Marriage. It not unfrequently
happens that clergymen, in marrying a couple,
omit to give a certificate of the marriage,
or to ruako any registration ot it. Such evi
dence is rendered especially important that
now, as,' in the case of the death of a soldier,
the widow must have a certificate of marriage
before she can receive a pension. V New
Jersey paper, in speaking of this subject, as
it respect that State, says : "Upon search
lag tho records within the past year for mar
riages, nearly half of the unfortunate widows
have beeD turned away with tho remark 'The
clergyman performing the ceremony has neg
ected to comply with the law.' "
To Detect Counterfeit Fifty Cent Notes.
Many irson da not know the counterfeit
fifty cent postal currency from the genuine.
There are marks on tho spurious that, if ob
served, will at once show the counterfeit. On
the counterfeit the final E," in tho words
'United States 1'ostage," ov r the head of
Washington, is dropped, and the letter "S"
in the word "Treasurers," extends higher up
than the other letters- Another test is that,
in the spurious, tha "y," in
the word " De
positary," on the back of the note, does not
touch the edge of the border around it. At
tention to these directions will prevent per
sons being imposed upon.
The President's Emancipation Proclama
tion Purchased. We are gratified to be able
to state that Thomas B. Bryan, Esq., has
purchastd the original manuscript of the
President's Emancipation Proclamation, hav
iug paid the managers of the Northwestern
fair the handsome sum of three thousand dol
lar for it, and having g;ven obligations that
it shall not go out ot the city. Chicago Trib.

confined or unduly acted upon It may seem
strange, that Holloway'g Pills should be recom
mended for Dysentery and Flux, many persons
supposing lhat they would increase the relaxation.
This is a great mistake, for these Pills will correct
the Liver and Stomach, and thus remove all the
acrid humors from the system. This medicine will
give tone and vigor to the whole. organic system,
however derand, while health and strength fol

one part to break out in another. Whereas this
Ointment will remove the humors from the system,
and leave the Patient a healthy and vigorous man.
It will require a little perseverance in bad cases
to insure a lusting cure.
For Wounds either occasioned by the Bayonet,
Sabre, or the Eullet, Sores or Eruises,
To which every Soldier or Sailor are liable, there
are no medicines so safe, sure, and convenient, as
