OROSPECTUS OF THE COXTINEN
L TAL MONTHLY There are periods
n tne world s mstory marked by extraordinary
and violent crises, sudden as the breaking forth
of a volcano, or the bursting of a storm on the
ocean, ihese crises i-weep away in a moment the
landmarks ot generations, lbey call out trcsh
talent, and give to the old new direction. It is
then that new ideas are born, new theories, devel
oped. Such periods demand fresh exponents, and
new men tor expounders.
ThiSatontinent has lately been convulsed by
an upheaving so sudden and terrible that the re
lations of ali men and all classes to each other are
violently disturbed, and people look about for the
elements with which to sway the storm and di
rect the whirlwind. Just at present, we do not
know what all this is to bring forth ; but we do
know that great results must flow from snch ex
traordinary commotions.
At a juncture so solemn and so important, there
is a special need that the intellectual force of the
country should be active and efficient. It is a
time for great minds to speak their thoughts bold
ly, and to take position as the advance guard. To
this end, there is a special want unsnpplied. It is
that of an Independent Magazine, which shall be
open to the first intellects of the land, and which
shall treat tbe issue presented, and to be presented
to tbe country, in atone no way tempered by par
tizanship, or influenced by fear, favor or the hone

In Politics, it will advocate, with all the force
at its command, measures best adapted to preserve
tne oneness ana integrity of these United States.
It will never yield to the idea of any disruDtion
of this Republic, peaceably or otherwise; and it
will discuss with honesty and impartiality what
must be done to save it. In this department, some
of the most eminent statesmen of the time will con
tribute regularly to its pages.
in literature, it will be sustained by the best
writers ana ablest thinkers ot this country.

to the Union, and the only standard of aeceptancs
that of intrinsic excellence.
Ihe Editorial Department will embnna in ad

on all current topics, and also devote ahundnnt

ZIODEY'S LADY'S BOOK FOR 1863.
Gueat Liter art and Pictorial Year !
The publisher of Godey's Lady's Book, thank
ful to that public which has enabled him to pub
lisfi a magazine for tbe last 3:1 years of a larger
circulation than any in America, has made an ar
rangement with the most popular authoress in this
country Marios Harlasd. authoress of '-Alone.
Hidden Path," ;'Moss Side." ' Nemesis." and
'Miriam." who will furnish a story for every cuin-
oerot the Lady s Hook Tor I sea. This alone will
place the Lady's Book in a literary point of view
tar ahced ol any o trier magazine. Marion liar
land writes for no other publication. Our other
favorite writers will all continue to furnish arti
cles throughout the year.
Sixty-Sixth aiui Sixty-Seventh volumes of Go
dey s Lady's Book for 1S63, will contain nearly
1300 pages of Reading matter, 24 pages of Music.
II iioubie i.xtension Colored t asbion Plates, equal
to 24 of other magazines, over 1200 wood engrav
ings. 14 steel engravings of beautiful subjects. 7S0
articles by the best authors in America. And all
these will bo given in ld63, at prices for whih
see our extremely low club rates.
The oldest, the best, and the cheapest magazine
in America is tne uodey s Cady s Hook. The im
mense increase in the circulation of Godey (hav
ing trebled itself in the last 4 years) is a convinc
ing proot of the superiority of the work, if the
work itself was not sufficient evidence. And when
it is considered that not a bribe in the shape of a
premium has ever been offered, it shows that Go-
dey'sLaxly's Book stands first in the hearts of A
merican ladies, who subscribe for the sake of the
Uook and not the premium.
The Literature of the Lady's Book' is bv the first
writers in amenca. ana nas always been remark
able lor its high literary and moral character
Clergymen recommend the Book, and it can be
read aloud in the family circle. The matter is far
superior to that of any other magazine, having a
healthy and instructive tone.
Eight Specialities that no other rnacraxine has.
and only found in Godey. to wit: -'Original Mu

Of Steel engravings, the press have nnnnimnu

any magazine of the world. You may look in
