Oct Bora. We learn that the company
which left tbia place last, is now in camp at
.JUriJUn Hill, about three miles from Wash
ington, and that a portion of it has been on
Provost duty in the city. They were all well
t last accounts. They arrived at camp on
Sunday evening, and had to lay on the ground
without tents that night; and could get no
rations until Monday evening, when they re
ceived a half ration of bread. On Tuesday
morning, however, they drew full rations, and
all are in fine spirits now. Persons desiring
to write should address, "Care of Capt. Z. C.
McCulIough, Company E 149th Reg. Pa. Vol.,
Col. Roy Stone, Washington, D. C.
Toe Blcktails. A letter from Capt. E. A.
Irvin, to bis father, dated camp near Centre
ville, September 1st, 18C2, gives the loss (of
his little company of thirteen men) in the re
cent actions between Warrenton and Bull Run,
as follows: Killed, John Kratzer. Mortally
wounded and since dead, James Henry and
Daniel Shaver. Severely wounded, Benton
Granger. Slightly wounded, Joseph Brooni
all and Israel Freeze. The Captain was well,
but worn out with fatigue. He hopes to be all
right in a few days, and says the rebels would
have been whipped had our army been brought
into action properly, and that only a small
portion of our forces were engaged at any one
time. Query, who is to blame 1
Few companies in the army -have been more
frequently engaged, or endured more hard
ships than the company under Capt. Irvin. It
would seem from his letter that he had only
thirteen wen left, Gt for service ; and of these
six were disabled in the recent fight, leaving
him but seven men! The Captain and his
Lieutenants are all brave, gallant, and compe
tent fhcera. and we should like to see the
the ranks of his company again filled up with
Clearfield men. It has already reflected great
honor ujon our county, and will continue to
do so as long as there is a man left to carry a
Inusket or sword.

Commonwealth of Pennsylvnuii, $ In the
name and by the authority of the Common
wealth of Pennsylvania, Andrew G. Curtin,
Governor of the said Commonwealth.
PROCLAMATION.
Whereas, in the present position of affairs,
itjs expedient that measures should be taken
to arm and prepare our people for defence :
Now, therefore, 1 do earnestly recommend
the immediate formation, throughout the
Commonwealth, of volunteer companies and
regiments, in conformity with the Militia Act
of 1858. Arms will be distributed to the organ
izations to be formed, agreeably to the provi
sions of that act.
It is furter recommended that, in order to
give due opportunities for drill and instruc
tion, all places of business be closed daily at
three o' clock, P. M., so that persons employ
ed therein may after that hour be at liberty to
attend to their military duties. The cheerful
alacrity with which the men of Pennsylvania
have hitherto given themselves to the service
of the country, has pressed heavily on her mil
itary resources. I am reluctant to ask ber
people to assume further burdens; but as their
safety requires that they should do so, it is in
their behalf that I put fuith the recommenda
tions herein contained and urge a prompt com
pliance with them.

monwealth, the eighty-seventh. By the Gov

The Indian Massacres is Minnesota. The
St. Paul Press of the "3th ult. contains a clear
narrative of the recent massacres in Minnesota,
by Other-Day, a friendly Indian, which throws
great light on its origin and extent. Four
Sioux, of Little Six.s band, began the massa
ere without premeditation and without organ
izing an outbreak, by murdering six white per
sons at Acton, Meeker county. They fled to
Redwood, and fearful of conseqnences, there
took advantages of the prevailing disaffection
toexite an insurrection, hoping to escape per
sonal consequences by plunging the tribe into
deeper crimes. They succeeded, but it is only
the Sioux on or near the reservation who
were implicated in the massacre, or willing
parties to it not more than six hundred in all
Turning the Tables. V. II. Cauxine par
took of Agapito's meat in the little Dauphine
street restaurant, New Orleans, and not only
refused to pay therefor, but drew a revolver
on bis host, stating that lie was a soldier in
the United States service ; after partaking of
his meal, he felt in his pockets and found
that his purse was lost. He then offered his
watch as security, but Agapito relused t ac
cept it, and caused the arrest of the money
less eater. On this showing the soldier was
discharged by the Provost Court. He there
upon made a counter charge againat Agapito
of selling liquor to bun a soldier. On thij
charge Vgapito was fined $25.
Laconic Sword Presentation. The New
Albany (Indiana) Ledger states that a ra'.her
laconic sword presentation took place at Camp
Noble, a few days since. A member of the
Sixty-sixth Regiment, purchased a sword for
Captain Gerard, and Captain J. H. Fawsct was
deputed to present it. This the Captain did,
ns follows : "Here, John is a sword.' Captain
Gerard tock it and replied :Thank you; I'll
see you again about it, alter l have tried it."
The presentation and reply were both to the
point.
At a grand war meeting in Hartford, Conn.,
on Thursday of last week, the Rev. Mr. Trask,
of Pittslield, Mass., exhibited a bullet receiv
ed by a drummer-boy on the 17th day of June,
1777, and which he carried in bis body 77
years. Mr. Trask said be took the bullet from
the dust in his cofQn only four weeks ago.
The War Department issued an important
order on Thursday, declaring all attempts to
procure substitutes in anticipation of the
draft to be a discouragement to enlisting, and
that persons so acting were liablo to arrest
under the order of August 8th.

The Latest Sews. Y
Received by Tuesday Evening's Mail-'
The news by last night's mail is not very
satisfactory in regard to the extent of the reb
el invasion of Maryland. Tbero is no doubt,
however, of their having occupied Frederick
city, They threaten Baltimore, Philadelphia,
Harrisburg and Washington, and the sympa
thisers in those cities are quite elated at the
success of their friends. The rebels have ex
tended their pickets as far as New Markei.
Johnson, it is said, holds this position with a'
strong force, and Jackson is reported fifteen
miles below Point of Rocks. There are no
rebel infantry east of Poolesville. Tbey are
drawn tip in line of battle across the road, and
rest upon their arms, ready for an attack.
Their Cavalry are scouring the whole country
for horses, cattle and provisions. It is said
they brought no baggage with them, and seem
to be determined to live upon the country in
which they ate located. They are in high
spirits, and feel sute of taking Washington
but say they are going north first to procure
supplies. Many of these reports need con
firmation.
The redels attacked Gen. Whites outpost
at Martinsburg,.Va., but were repulsed with
loss of 50 killed. Our loss 2 killed and 10
wounded.
General rope has been assigned to a new
position in the West, and McDowell is said
to be tnnsfered to West Point.
