CliEABPIELD, AUG. 20, 1862.
, RESOLUTIONS OF THE
PJEOP-LE'S UNION CONVENTION.
Pasied July 17- 1862, (
Resolved, that the Convention, representing
aa it does the loyal citzens of Pennsylvania
without distinction of party, reaffirms the sen
timents embodied in the resolution adopted at
a meeting of the loyal members of Congress
at the national capital, July 12th, 18C2, viz :
"That we hold it to be the duty of all lojal
men to stand by the Union in this hour of its
trial; to unite their hearts and hands in earn
ost, patriotic efforts for. its maintenance a
gainst those who are inarms against it; to
sustain with determined resolution our patri
otic President and administration in their en
ergetic efforts lor the prosecution of the war
and the preservation of the Union against en
emie at home or abroad; to punish traitors
and treason with fitting severity, and to crush
the present wicked and causeless rebellion, so
that no flag of disunion shall ever again bo
raised over any portion of the Republic ; that
to this end we invite the co-operation of all
men who love their country, in the endeavor
to rekindle throughout all the States such a
patriotic fire as shall utterly consume all who
strike at the Union of our fathers, ana all
who sympathize with tbeir treason or palliate
their guilt."
- Resolved, That we have continued confidence
In the honesty, capacity and patriotism of
President Lincoln and his constitutional advi
sers; that we approve the principles on which
his policy, both foreign and domestic, have
been conducted ; that we sanction and sustain
all the measures which he has found it neces
sary to adopt to guard the government against
the assaults of traitors, their sympathizers
and abettors; and that we esteem it eminent
ly fortunate that in this most trying crisis of
our cherished Union, we have at the helm of
public affairs one to upright, temperate, pru
dent and firm as ho has proved himself to be.
Resolved, That we cordially approve of the
administration of Andrew G. Curtin, Gover
nor of this Commonwealth, marked as it hs
been by extraordinary vigor in the discharge
of all public duties, by untiring zeal in the
cause of the country, and especially in recruit
ing forces for the national army, by enlarged
and liberal care for the sick and wounded sol
diers of the State, by a wise and prudent econ
omy In the expenditures of the funds commit
ted to his care, and by the unsparing devcted
ness, of all its members, and in particular of
the Governor hiolself, to the constant haras
sing, complicated and novdl labors which the
xigenciesof the great rebellion have imposed.
Resolved, That wo acknpwledge but two di
visions of people of the United States in this
crisis; those who are loyal to its constitution
and every inch of its soil, and are ready to
make every sacrifice for the integrity of the
Union, and the maintenance of civil liberty
trithinjit, and those who openly or covertly en
deavor to sever our country, or to yield to
the insolent demands of its enemies; that we
fraternize with the former, and detest the lat
ter; and that, forgetting all former party
names and distinctions, we call upon all pa
triotic citizens to rally for ono undivided
country, one flag, one destiny.
Resolved, That the government of the Uni
ted States and its people, with an occasional
exception among the reckless inhabitants
vhere this rebellion was fostered, have wisely
-nd studiously avoided all interference with
he concerns of other nations, asking, and
lsnally enjoying alike non interference with
heir own, and that such is, and should con
tinue to be, its policy ; that the intimations of
i contemplated departure from this sound
ule of conduct on the part of some of the na
ions of Europe, by an intervention in our
-resent struggle, is as unjust to them as it
ould be to us and to the great principles tor
hich we are contending; but we assure them,
'ith a solemnity of conviction which admits
f no distrust or fear, and from a knowledge
f and a firm reliance upon the spirit and for
tude of twenty millions of freemen, that any
tempt thus to intervene will meet .a resis
nce .unparalled in its forcj, unconquerable
its persistence, and fatal to those whom it
Satended to aid; and that it will tend only
Istrengthen and elevate the public.
Hcsolccd, That the skill, bravery and endu
rce exhibited by our army and navy have
ecited our admiration and gratitude; that
behold in these qualities the assurance of
8N3 and speedy success to our arms, and of
rt and discomfiture to the rebels; that we
oe the government to aid and strengthen
tl-m by all the means in its power, and care
itly to provide for sick, wounded and disa
btd soldiers and their families; to prosecute
tfe war with increased vigor and energy, uu
tiithe rebellion is utterly crushed, the integ
riif of the Union, in all its borders, restored,
anl every rebel reduced to submission, or
driven from the land ; and that to accomplish
thtse ends we pledge to our rulers our faith,
our fortune and our lives.
Resolved, That tha course of the Hon. David
Wilmot, in the United States Senate, is man
ly, consistent and emineutly patriotic, and we
hereby endorse him as a true and faithful rep
resentative of the loyal people of this State.

May 19, 1800. Ellen S.. aet. 2S. single, ttT,r
was very strong. Two years ago she had an u.
tack of acute rheumatism, from which she was con
fined to her bed for two weeks, and subsequently
from a relapse for four more. She has been wefl
since then till last Saturday; while cngu-ed in
house cleaning, she took cold, had pain in her back
felt cold, but had no decided chill. Two da
later her ankles began to swell which was follow,
ed by swelling of the knee jointsand of the haoJii
She has dull pain in her shoulders, and herlttuck
les are very lender, red and painful ; both hand
are affected, but the right is the iiiostso. Tii
then, is a ease of acute rheuinatirin. or. as it ia now'
fashionably called, rheumatic fever. It is a well
marked typical case. We will carefully watch the
ease, and from time to- time call your attention to
the various symptoms which present tLeuiscJvei.
My chief object in bringing her before you now
to call your attontion to a remedy which hu re
cently been recommended in tLetreatmentof rheu
matism. I mean propylamine. Dr. Awenariu of
St. Petersburg, recommends it in the highest term
Laving derived great benefit from it use in 2a
cases whieh came under his care. Various com
mendatory testimonial! respecting it have appear
ed in our journals, aud I propose giving it auuthur
trial. I must confess 1 xui ulway incrvdulous a
to the worth of new remedies, which are vaunted
as specifies ; but this comet to us recommended o
highly, that we are bound to givo it a trial.
SAME CASE FOUR DAYS LATER !
Mat 23,1800.-1 wi'I now exhibit toyou the pa
tient for whom I preabribed Propylamine, aud
who was then laboring under an attack of acute
rheumatism. She has steadily taken it iu dov
ef three grains, every two hours, (inteimlttiDg it
at night). The day after you saw her. I found hr
much more comfortable, belter than sh expected
to be for a week or more, judging from Ltr cthr
attack. (The patient now walked into the rooio.l
The improvement has steadily progressed, aud
you cannot fail to notice a Marked change iu tbo
appearance of her joints, which are now nearly of
their natural size. Thus far our experiment would
have seemed very success! ul ; but gentlemen we
must wait a little while before we caii gire a de
cided opiuiou as to what is to be tho reeull.
THREE DAYS LATER!!
. Mat 26, ISS0. This is the case of acate rheuma
tism treated with propylamine, the first of lboe l
which I called your attention at our last olinie.
She is still very comfortable, and is now takiiig
three gratns thrice daily.
In this case it has seemed to be followed by very
satistactory results. The second cave to whigb
your attention was called at our last lecture. La
also continued to do well. I will now bring -fore
you a very characteristic case of acute 4
matism, and if the result b esatiafactory.
as good jurymen, trexha.ll justl 'y reiuler our ...,
in favor of propylamine.
He is a seaman, tut. 26. who was admitted a few
days ago. lias had occasional rheumatic puius,
but not so as to keep his bed. until eight days ago.
The pains began in his right knee, subsequently
affected the left knee, and later the joints of the
upper extremities. Thee joints are all swolleu.
tense and tender. His tongue is furred; hisskiu
at present, dry, though there has been much sweat
iug. His pulse is lull and strong, aud about lit).
He has now used propylamine tweuty-lour hours.
This gentlemen is what may be called niictly
typical case ot acute rheumatism. There was exposure-to
cold and wet. and this exposure is fol
lowed by a feeling of coldness, severe articvlar
pain, beginning, as it usually does, iu the lower
joints There is fever and the profuse sweatiag,
sogcnerallyattendant on acute rheumatism.
I did not bring this patient before you with tbe
intention of givingyou a lecture ou all the poiuts
connected with rheumatism, but lo again givo a
trial to the new remedy we are testing, and lo hx
bibit to you this typical case, as I have cnHed it.
thau which there could not be a fairer opportunity
for testing the medicine in question. We are
therefore, avoiding the uso of all other medicines
even anodynes, that there may be no misgivii.as
as to which was the oQ-'ient remedy. You fem
see the case in a future clinic.
THE RESULT. A FAVORABLE VERDICT.
Junk 'J, !Sf0. The next of our canva'escenu i.
ihecaso of acute rheumatism before you at our eUu
ic of May 26th, which I then called a typioal caee.
and which it was remurked wasa fairopportuni:y
for testing the worth of our new remedy. It was
therefore steadily given in threo grain doses every
two tiours ioi lour da vs. Iheratient has cot alot
very nicely, and is now able to walk about as y w
seo. J do not hesitate to say that I have never seen
as severe a caseof acate rheumatism. to soon restor
ed to health at this man has been, and without be
ing prepared to decide positively as to the value of
the remedy we have used, J feel bound to state thai
in the cases in which u have tried the chloride ot
Propylamine, the patients have sraintd their health
much earlier than under tin treatment ordinarily
pursued. I wish, gentlemen, you would your
selves try it, and report tne results.
