Tba great apprehensions of the
Democratic leaders teema to be that
the alarea at the aoath are about to
be emancipated, and will overrun
the north. The free negro popula
tion of too north, according to the
Hast eeosna ia 222,745, and of the.
iare SUtes 259,078, being an in
crease of 68,667 in the slave States.
2?ow if there be such danger of
emancipated stares OTerrunning the
North, why bare the 259,078 free
negroes above named remained at
Cbe Sooth I In many Statea the
most stringent laws have been enact
ed for driving them oat even re
ducing them to slavery in some in
stances, and yet they have refused
to come north. The reason is that a
warm climate is natural to the negro,
and he will remain in it if possible,
and seek It if permitted. There is
more probability of free negroes go
ing south if slavery Is done away,
than coming north.
In bis old age, Dr. Brown was one
day called on by a young clergyman,
who asked htm several questions in
regard to divine grace, lie was just
letting out for a walk, and said
'Come along wi' me, and I'll ex
pound as I go ; but ye look after my
feet." They got upon a rough bit
of ground, and the eager old man
was In the midst of unfolding the
divine scheme, and the young list
ener was so busy in drinking in his
words, that he forgot to look after
the veteran's steps. The old Doctor
presently stumbled and fell ; and
getting up, he sharply said t "Jamie
the grace of God can do much, but
it cannot gle man common sense."
In Venango county, is a queer fel
low by the name of Tom Barton, who
drinks and stutters, and stutters and
drinks. He has a brother Jim who
ia glib of tongue, and a great liar
we hope be has reformed, for he pro
fessed to have become a good roan,
and was baptised in the river. It
was a bitter cold day In tho winter,
and the Ice had to be cut to make a
place for the ceremony. As Jim
came out of the water, Tom said to
him t "Is it cc-cold Jim 7" "No,"
replied Jim, "not at ail." "D-d-dip
him again m-m-minister," cried Tom,
"he l-t-litt yet I"
When General Butler took posses
sion of Baltimore, shortly after
the breaking out of the . war,
the New Orleans journals made mer
ry at his expense, and declared he
was an old colored barber, known as
"Picawunej Butler," who formerly
kept a shop under the St. Charles
Hotel in the Crescent City. We pre
sume the New Orleans people will
be pleased to meet their old friend
"Picayune." It is feared, however,
that they won't like his razor, nor
even the shaving to which some of
his journeymen will subject the
rebels.
A contraband from Williamsburg,
who came to Fortress Monroe with
one of our chaplains, says that before
our troops reached Williamsburg,
the slaves in the vicinity were told
to beware of the "horrible Yankees,
who bad very small heads, with front
teeth like horses, and were known to
eat human flesh." Upon being ask
ed whether the alaves believed this,
he replied "Dun'no ; reckon not,
massa. Dem Yankees has not got
no horns, but fights like do debblel"
