A Stbahqe Dream. Old Squire
W. is an honest, jovial sonl, with few
religious scruples fond of a langh ;
Or a good joke at any time. lie re
lates the following on himself, as an
actual occnrrenee : "One n igbt, boys,

ladder, like Jacob's, reached from
the good place, aad it was on this
ladder that I went up. When I reacn

Proof Positive. Old Zacharlas
Bobbins lived in Wood county, Mis
sissippi, and was called on to prove
the insanity of a young man on trial
for an assault with intent to kill. He
iwore that be bad no doubt whatever
that the prisoner was an insane man.
On bis cross" examination be was re
quired to state his reason for this o
pinion. "Why bless your life," said
he, "I've known Jimmy alters, and
he's all era ben a Dimicrat, and when
the Dimieratic party put up their
man last fall, Jimmy didn't vote for
him ; and I alters think that a Dimi
crat that don't stick to his party has
ben la'rnin' too much to be in his
right mind I" Jimmy was acquitted,
for old Zachariah's opinion prevails

Of the toad. The skin of this rep
tile contains glands which secrete in
abundance a milky, glutinous fluid
when the toad is put to pain or irri
tated. This is scraped off and dried.
It produces incurable obstruction and
enlargement of the liver, and a spee
dy death. Some beat the toad with
rods to make it secrete the venom ;
others place the creature in an earth
en vessel over a slow Are.
Notice is hereby given, that in pursu
ance of an Aet of Amenably pasted the
12th day of June, A. D. 1819, entitled
"An Aet to amend an act directing the
mode of selling nnseated lands, in Clear
field eounty," will be exposed to Public
Sale or outcry, for the taxes due and
unpaid thereon, at the Court House in
the Borough of Clearfield, on the Sec
ond Monday in June, &. D. 1862 :

An Irishmah's Wit. The follow
ing incident occuned at Pea Ridge :
"One of our boys was, in the heat of
the Tight wounded in both feet by a
cannon ball. Our forces having fal
len back his Irish wit was brought
into play. Seeing a big Secesh com
ing by, be presented bis musket,
made the fellow surrender, shoulder
htnt, and in this position he rode in
to onr lines, where ho delivered Mr.
Butternut over as a prisoner."
An Iscidest. A singular incident
is related of the battle of Pea Ridge :
"During the action on the 8tb, a
wood-cock, which was fJying over to
wards us from the secesh side, sua
deftly darted to the ground, and was
picked up near Gen. Curtis' position,
when it was ascertained that a stray
bullet bad passed through its body
while on the wing. This was regard
ed as a good omen."
A child of five years having seen
her father for the first time, he bav
ing been absent in California, was
much astonished that he should claim
any authority over her, and on ono
occasion of rebellion, she cried out,
"1 wish you had never married in
to out family I"

well known "brick," lying in a spir
itual manner, was advised in a friend
ly way to economise, as "flour was
going tip" "Let it go;" said bot
tie nose, "I kin git as 'high' as flour

A little girl of three years, from
beyond the Mississippi, who had nev
er seen an apple tree in full bloom,
' beheld one in Ohio. She lifted ber
fat bands in the attitude of devotion,
and exclaimed, "See God's big bo-
quot!" A beautiful thought.
The Indianapolis Journal says that
when 1'arson iirowniow visited too
rebel prison in that city, the prison
ers shouted "Put bim out !" "Ah,
you good-for-nothing rascals," said
JbSrownlow, "don't you wish some
body would put you out T"
The boats in which Floyd escaped
from Fort Donelson didn't belong to
bim and bis brigade, they were the
common property of the whole Con
federate army, r Ioyd 'stole' them.
A young candidate for the legal
profession was asked what he should
do first when employed to bring an
action. "Ask for money on account,'
was the prompt reply. He passed.
The rebels say that their armies, if
defeated, will retire for defence to
some mountain fastness. We have
been admiring their fastness (on foot)
for some time.
A Confederate paper says that Gen.
Price isn't whipped that be is mere
ly falling back. - Well, oftentimes i
man shot through the heart merely
"falls back."
An Irish editor speaking of the
miseries of Ireland, ssya : "Hercup
of misery has been for ages over
flowing and is net yet full "
Some wag said, when Yancey gets
home, be will be as little able to re
cognize the Southern Confederacy as
Lord raimemon ntmseif.
He that blows the coals in quarrels
that he has nothing 'to do witb, has

Buckner is a liberal fellow. At
Fort Donelson he proposed to treat.

NEW-YORK TRIBUNE NEW VOLUME
On the soventh of September, 1361, THE
NEW-YORK WEEKLY TRIBUNE commenced the
twenty-first year of its existence; the THE DAI
LY TRIBUNE being some months older andTHK
SEMI-WEEKLY TRIBUNE somewhat younger.
For more than twenty years, this journal has la
bored in what its conductors have felt to bo the
cause of Humanity, Justice and Freedom, endeav
oring to meliorate the condition of the oppressed
and unfortunate, to honor and encourage useful
exertion in whatever sphere, and, to promote by
all means the moral, intellectual and material ad
vancement of our country. It has aimed to be
right rather than popular, and to espouso and
commend to-day the truth that others may not be
willing to accept till to-morrow. In pursuing
this course, mistakes have doubtless been mado
and faults committed ; but,' having in all things
incited our readers to think and judge for them
selves rather than adopt blindly our own or oth
ers' conclusions, we believe we may fairly claim
for this journal the credit of having qualified its
readers to detect and expose even its own errors.
To develop .he minds of the young by the most
general, thorough and practical Education, and to
encourage and stimulate Productive Industry,
through free grants of rublic Lands to actual set
tiers and cultivators, as also through the protec
tion of immature or peculiarly exposed branches
from too powerful foreign competition, are among
tne aims to wnicn this journal hns adhered
through good and evil report, and which it stead
fastly commends to American patriotism and
philanthropy.
As to the Civil War now devastating onr coun
try, we hold it to have originated in a Rebellion
more wanton, wicked, inexcusable then was ev
er before known a Rebellion in the interest of
the few against the many a Rebellion designed
to raise higher tho walls of caste and tighten the
chains of oppression. Having done all we could
without a surrender of vital principle to avoid
this War. and witnessed the forbearance, meek
ness, and long-sufl'ering with which the Federal
Government sought to avert its horrors, we hold
it our clear duty, with that of every other citizen
to stand by the nation and its fairly chosen ru
lers, and to second with all our energies their ef
forts to uphold the Union, the Constitution, and
the supremacy of the laws. And, though the Re
bellion has become, through usurpation, deception,
terroism, and spoliation, fearfully strong, we be
lieve the American Republic far stronger, and
that the unanimous, earnest efforts of loyal hearts
and hands will insure its overthrow. But on all
questions affecting the objeoU, the scope, and du
ration of this most extraordinary eontest, we de
fer to those whom the American People have
clothed with authority, holding unity of purpose
and of action indispensable in so grave an emergency
In a crisis like the present, onr columns must
be largely engrossed with the current history of
the War for the Union, and with elucidations of
its more striking incidents. We shall not, how
ever, remit that attention to Literature, to For
eign Affairs, to Agricultural Progress, to Crops,
Markets. Ao.. which has already, we trust, won for
THE TRIBUNE an honorable position among its
coiemporariea. uurmam object is and shall be
to produce a comprehensive newspaper, from
which a careful reader may glean a vivid and
faithful history of the times, not merely in the do
main of Action but in that of Opinion also. As
our facilities for aoquiring information increase
with years, we trust that an improvement in the
contents ot our journal is percoptible, and that,
in the variety and fulness of intelligence afford
ed, we may still hope to ' make each day a critic
on the last." In this hope, we solicit a contino
anoe of the generous measure of patronage hith
erto accorded to our journal.
