'The Maryland Baptist Union Association
have addressed a letter to the Baptists ot the
whole country, deprecating the treasonable
movement at the South, and calling upon all
members of their communion to exert their
influence for the speedy termination of sec
tional animosity. This movement,called forth,'
perhaps, by the action of some churches of
that persuasion in the extreme South, recom
mending secession, is significant, inasmuch as
the gentlemen who form the committee for
writing the letter, are the most prominent and
influential divines in the Southern portion of
the Baptist Church. 1 The letter.is written in
a very mild and conciliatory spirit, and will
doubt less exercise a beneficial influence among
those brethren who havo unfortunately permit
ted the excitement of the hour to overcome
the voice of the Apostle, who instructs Chris
tians to be good citizens.

RUSSELL'S IMPROVED FLEXIBLE

"We need an improvement in Harrows," is a re
mark not unfrequently heard among farmers. A
raong the few improvements which have hereto
fore been made in this important and useful, we
might say indispensable implement of husbandry,
it would seem that none of them has fully met the
wants of the Agriculturist. Some are too heavy,
some too complicated and costly, and all are lia
ble to the objection that they are only adapted to
certain kinds of ground, for while it is easy to get
up a harrow that will work well on smooth, clear
and level ground, it is not so easy to find one that
will answer a good purpose i.n new ground, among
stumps or on a hilly and undulating surface, but
when you get one of the latter class, you may
rest assured that it will also give satisfaction on
a smooth surface. .
The undersigned confidently believe that this
object is fully attained in this improvement, and
would call the attention of Practical and Scienti
fic agriculturists to the following important fea
tures which characterize it. First, its simplicity ;
secondly, its strength and durability, and lastly
its adaptedness to any and all kinds of surface.
The fallowing named practical Farmers, of Clear
field county, who have used it this season thus
testify to it.

the scientific world is well acquainted speaks thus
reference to it. "The harrow is one of the most
important agricultural implements, as much de
pends upon the top pulverizing or dressing of tho
soil, both before and after the seed is sown, for the
success of the future crop." After describing it,
it continues : "This combination harrow is so sim-
fle, that it is superlloua to extend this description,
tcan be made cheap, strong and durable, and it
is well adapted for Harrowing either well clear
ed or rough ground. -
The undersigned have purchased the right to
make, sell, use, and transfer their right to do the
same, within the connty of Clearfield, and are
now prepared to furnish the article to all who wish
to purchase, on reasonable terms. They will also
sell individual rights to make and use the same.
