A number of anonymous letters have bedn
received by citizens of LTarrisburg, threatening
the destruction of the town by fire.

It is said that a lady, on patting on her cor

Omnibuses, the first seen in Syria, have be
gun to rnn at Beyrout. Crowds of natives
stood gazing at them for hours with wonder
and admiration.
There are five starch manufactories in the
town of Stowe, Vt., each of which consume
from 17,000 to 20,000 bushels of potatoes
yearly, yielding about eight pounds of starch
to a bushel.
Bishop Ames, of the Methodist church, was
lately robbed of $100 at Galena, 111., by a
togue who got into the room where he slept.
The Bishop was in attendance at the Kock
River conference.
At a party the other evening, the question
was put, "What is Religion V "Religion,"
replied one of the party, "religion is an insn
rauce against fire in the next world, for which
honesty is the best policy."
"Steel your heart," said an ex-President to
his son (who was going to Europe); "you are
now going amoug some of the most facinating
of the fair sex.'- "I had much rather steal
theirs," said the promising youth.

Parties lately arrived from Pike's Peak state
that a fearful mortality had broken out in
Mountain City, earning ofi as many as four
teen miners ner week. At first the disease
was supposed to be mountain lever; but
close inspection showed that a greater number
of deaths were caused by drinking highly-poi
sonous or strychnine whisk'.
The Piles under London Bridge have been
driven 500 years, and on examining them in
1845,they were found to be but little decayed
They are principally elm. Old Savoy Place,
in the city of London, was built 650 years
ago, and the wooden piles, consisting of oak,
elm, beech and chestnut, were found upon re
ceut examination to bo perfectly sound.
