Somebody emptied upon a wharf in Phila
delphia a quantity of cherries which had been
used to flavor rum. About twenty pigs par
took of the fruit, and were niado very drnnk
thereby. Being intoxicated, they began to
squeal, and in other ways to make themselves
ridiculous. In the foolish gravity of their
countenances they were said to resemble ine
briated humanity very closely.
- Selling a Judge. Bob Harper, who lived
on Kittle Creek, in Wilkes county, Georgia,
was fined fivo dollars by Jndgo Dooley during
court week. Bob was a wag, and said he
would havo the worth of his money out of the
Judge. It happened the Judge was on his
circuit, (on horseback in those days.) and was
passing by Bob's house on the crcuk, which
was swollen by a beavy rain, when he wanted
to know if the creek was swimming.
, I reckon it is," said Bob, "you will get a
cold bath ir you try it."
"I'll strip and make my horse swim it if yon
will go up tho creek and bring my clothes
over," said the Judge.
OS went his nether garments and over went
the Judge, his horse not going in over his
knees, the creek being broad but shallow. As
the Judge got over, several persons were en
joying the fun from a store piaEza, neither Kob
nor his clothing making their appearance
The Judge was wrathy, cold and shivering
Bob, still on his own side of the creek, bawl
ed out, "Judge, you can have your breeches
lor five dollars."
"Bring them over," said tho Judge ; "I'm
sold ; yon may fight at the next court all the
week, and I'll not fine yon."
Mixixa rp the Babies. The Wcavcrville,
California, Journal gives the following account
of an afiair which, however it may move the
laughter of our readers, we fancy to havo
made some of the parties concerned ;laugh
on the wrong side of their mouths :"
"Some time ago there was a dancing party
given up north;' many of the ladies present
had little babies, whoso noisy perversity re
quired too much attention to permit the mo
thers to enjov the dance. A number of gal
lantyonng men volunteered to watch the young
ones while the parents indulged in a break
down.' No sooner had the women left the
babies in charge of tho mischievous fellows,
than they stripped the infants, changed their
clothes, giving to one the apparel of another
The dance over, it was time to go home, and
tho mothers took each a baby in the dress of
her own, and started, some to their homes, ten
or fifteen miles off, and were far on their way
before daylight. But the day following there
was a prodigious row in the settlement ; ob
servation disclosed startling physiological phe
nomena ; mothers discovered that a single day
bad changed the sex of their babies ; and then
commenced some of the tallest female pedes
trianism. Living miles apart, it required two
days to unmix the babies, and as many months
to restore the women to their natural sweet dis
positions. To this day it is unsafe for any of
tho baby mixers to venture into the locality."
