In the Circuit Court at Beaufort, N C,
Joseph Perry obtained a verdict of $500 dam
ages against Malichi Bell for slanderous words
used by Mrs. Bell against Mrs. Perry. -
It is asserted 1 that a man's finger nails
grows their complete length in four months
and a half. A man living 70 years renews his
nails 180 times. Allowing each nail to be half
an inch long, he has grown seven feet and nine
inches of finger nail on each finger, and on fin
gers and thumbs an aggregate of 77ft. 6 inche?
' Joseph Charles, one of the oldest and most
respected citizens, of St. Louis,Mo., was shot
and mortally wounded on the street on the 3d
of June, by J. W. Thornton. Thornton was
formerly a teller in the Boatmen's Saving's
Institution, and was tried and acquitted about
a year ago on the charge of having stolen
$20,000 from the bank.; Mr. Charles was one
of the principal witnesses against him, and in
Terence for his action in the matter he has
been shot. lie died the next day. '
At Detroit,recently an ox was killed because
he could not understand the French language.
The team consisting of one English and one
French ox, drawing a heavy load and driven
by a French driver, was crossing the track
when the express train made its appearance.
The driver, in great excitement, instantly or
dered his oxen to "chuck" (fhe French word
for "haw.") The French ox understood him,
and turning off the track, saved himself, but
the English ox, never having studied the lan
guage, pressed further on, and was instantly
killed. . - -. ,
