CLEARFIELD, PA., MAY 11, 1859.
The Sheriff offers S20 reward for Owen Mc
Govern, who escaped from his custody on the
night of the Sd instant.
Dr. Wis. Campbell has resumed the Drac
tice of medicine at Kylertown, as will be seen
by his card in another column.
Me&hell & Carter give notice that they
bare dissolved partnership. The business will
hereafter be conducted by Mr. Merrell alone
Stephen Graff has again commenced the
Grocery and Confectionery business in Cnr
tvensville. His advertisement appears in an
other part of this paper.
Fire in the Woods. A fire has been raging
lor several days in the woods up Chinchacla
moose creek, and has doubtless done consid
erable injury to the timber in that vicinity.
By Divine permission, the Rev. Foecht will
preach in the Lutheran Church in Clearfield,
on Sunday the 15th inst., at 10J o'clock in
the forenoon ; and in the Baptist church in
Curwensville at 3 o'clock in the afternoon.
Bible Society Meeting. A meeting of the
Clearfield county Bible Society will be held in
the Presbyter ian church in Clearfield, on Tues
day evening the 17th instant, (court week.)
Several addresses will be delivered. All are
invited to attend. A. McLeod, Prcst.
Clearfield Market. Tho following were,
yesterday, the retail prices of the articles
named : Flonr 8.75 per bbl. ; Wheat $1.75,
llye $1.25, Corn $1.25 and Buckwheat 75 cts.
per bushel ; Hams 14, Shoulders 11, Butter
18, Dried Peaches 16, and Dried Apples 11
cents per pound ; Potatoes $1 a bushel ; Eggs
12 ctn. per doz ; Hay $10 a ton.
On our outside to-day will be found the sec
ond No. of the History of Clearfield county.
Tho preservation of information relative to
tl.e settlement and progress of the county is a
matter which should enlist the interest of ev
ery citizen, and we trust, therefore, that per
sons in possession of any facts concerning the
oarly settlers will transmit the same to tho ed
itor of the Journal.
We publish to-day in our advertising col
umns the List of Ketailcrs of Foreign and
Domestic Merchandize in Clearfield county.
This we do on our own responsibility, tho Mer
cantile Appraiser having neither furnished us
a list, nor requested us to copy from tho other
paper, although the law expressly requires the
same to be published in two newspapers, if
there bo that many in the county.
"Clearfield Gas Coju-Asr." The Com
missioners appointed by the Act to incorpo
rate the Clearfield Gas Company, are request
ed to meet at the Court House in the Borough
f Clearfield on Saturday nest, (May 14th,) at
o'clock P. M., for the purpose of organizing,
mid making preparations for opening the
Books for subscriptions to the stock of said
company. A full attendance is requested.
A British officer writing from Teheran, Per
sia, to the 'London Times,' remarks: "A Ca
thartic Till -manufactured by 'an American
Chemist' (Dr. J. C. Aver, of Lowell, Mass.)
lias cured the Shah of a Liver Complaint that
threatened his life. This simple fact, as might
be expected, renders the Americans immense
ly popular here, while we English are over
looked. Doubtless our own scholars made tho
discoveries which he employe, and thus it is
in everything ; -we do the labor, then the mous
ing Americans put their mark upon it and tike
ihe reward. Dr.Ayer is idolized by the Court
and its retainers here, which will doubtless be
reflected to him on a gold snuff box, or dia
mond lii'tcd sword, while not the name even

teachers whose qualifications are recognized
hy literary men, or are experienced educators,
and the only one that grants Diplomas to those
t-nly of its students who are competent and

Pardoned. William Baer, convicted and
sentenced to the eastern penitentiary for his
participation in tho Gap larcenies, has been
pardoned by Governor Packer. His health
since his incarceralion, it is said, became so
tnnch impaired that he could not possibly have
lived out his sentence, and the pardon, it is
understood, was based on this ground.
Solomon Sturges, one of tho wealthy men
of Ohio, and a great landowner, is selling his
immense possessions, because he believed io
man had a right to own mere land than is ne
cessary for his use and that of his family.
Judge Cradlebaugh, U. S. Judgo at Utah,
whose course brought bira in conflict with
Gov. Cumming, has been removed. Tho va
cancy will not be filled for some time.
Col. James W. Quigglc, formerly of Lock
Haven and recently a member of the State
Senate, has been appointed Consul for the Lr.
cited States at Antwerp.

Two undoubted and significant facts, which ev
ery one interested will please bear in mind.

for violating the person of Miss Delilah Wil
derman, was convicted of horse stealing and
sentencud to eight additional years. Wonder
where John is to be imprisoned during tho pe
riod, of the latter sentence !
