    WrtCHCArr sn Ackiccltcke Pliny baa
recorded the story of an industrious ii4 ia
reoioas bcjbaodman, who, being ia advance
cf the knowledge ot bis time, cultivated a
mail piece cf ground upon aa improved meth
od, by which Le gathered ranch raore fruits,
aqd reaped larger profile than the neighbors
aboct bits, though their possessions were more
ample. liis uncommon s access excited their
'envy, inasmuch that they brought this accusa
tion against him : "That by aorc ry.cbarbis,
and witchcraft, be fcai transported Lis neigh
bors' fruits, fertility, aal increase to his
own fields." For this he was ordered peremp
torily by Albinus, a Roman general skilled in
agriculture, to answer the charge before him.
Cresinos, fearing the issue, resolved upon bis
best defence, brooght bis plow and other
rnral implements, and displaying them openly.
He sent there also bis daughter, a lusty, strong
lass, big of bone; then, tcrning to the citizens,
"My master, quoth be, these are the sorceries,
chirms, and ail the enchantments that I use.
I might also challenge my own travel and labor,
my early rising and lata setting cp, and the
painful sweat that I daily end are; but lam
not able to present these to your view, nor to
bring them with me to this assembly." This
bold and open defence captivated the people;
it proved the coup de main which turned a
, doubtful remit to bis entire favor; he was
pronounced 'not guilty," and those present
took note ol bis inventions. This story, tho'
not strictly belongiug to the history of our
own island, is derived from those who are
said to have first taught the Bnttons the art
of husbandry. It may, therefore, be fairly em-
ployed to show that the first improvers of ag
riculture had their days of trial ; that in all
ages and conntrys, and in every path of inqui
ry and invention in the discovery of the rota
tion of crops, as in that of rotary motion of
the earth a Galileo has bad to answer for his
daring, before some embodiment of ignorance
constituting an inquisition. Philip's History
of Prcgrtts.
Just as an anctioneer, in Harford, was say
ing "gone !" a few evenings since, his audi
ence went through the floor into the cellar,
bot happily, without hurting one of them.
The auctioneer, as soon at he found his legs,
remarked that the accident would enable him
to sell lower than before, and called tor an
other bid," and they "bid bim good eight."
A Dutchman Laving a friend hnng in this
countty, wrote to bis friends informing them
that after addressing a large crowd of citizens,
the scaffold on which he stood gave way,
owing to which he fell and broke his neck.
A lady, expressing a wish in the presenco
ef her son, a boy of five years that she had
something to read that she "had never read
before, the boy exclaimed, "take your Bible
' mother."

directly addressed to the diseased organs of the in

and often fatal diseas;s. vet I deem it vpt nv..
sary that each patient should have the benefit of
both general and local treatmont. The success of
my treatment in the aDove diseases, and the hi"h
character of the Institution over which I baveo
long had the honor to preside, are too well known
to need any eulogy or comment from me. At the
solicitation of many private and professional
f riendi, through whose philanthropic aid the above
charity has been long and liberally supported and
after due consideration. 1 have concluded to make
such arrangements as will bring the benefits of my
experience and treatment within the reach of all,
and not confine myself, as heretofore, to those on
ly who entered the Infirmary, or who were able to
visit me at my office. Hoping therefore that the
arrangement will give entire satisfaction, both to
my professional brethren and the public. I would
respectfully announce in conclusion, that 1 can
