Tight with a Bear. At "Woodland, Ulster
county, New York, on Sunday, two brothers,
John and Mat. Schoonmafcer, with no weapons
but their pocket knives, and no companions
bat their two dogs one a fox-hound, the oth
er a water-spaniel had a rough and tumble
fight with a bear. Part of the time the bear
had the tipper hand, and part, the men and
dogs ; but in a lucky moment the spaniel got
the bear fast by the hind leg, and then, as he
turned over to give the dog bis quietus, the
bound seized the opportunity and the bear,
too, by the under jaw, and so the two pinned
him to the ground, when John thrust a heavy
stake into his mouth, and placing bis knee on
the bear's head, proceeded, with but a sorry
specimen of a jack-knife, to perform the oper
ation of tracheotomy upon Bruin's throat, and
killed him. It proved to be a genuine black
bear, one of the red-nosed and most savage
&md, and weighed, when dressed, some 800
pounds.
A Green-Lookin? Chap from the Green
Mountain State, went over the line and on to
Montreal, "to look reound a leetle.;' Going
into a large and handsome dry-goods store,
bis verdancy attracted the attention of the
proprietor, who attemuted to ciuiz hiiu: but
unhappily having an iui-p-p-p-pediment in his
speech, be bad to give it up, and bis head clerk
came forward to sneak for him. The clerk
began. "Mr. Bull wished to know if you can
tell him why Balaam's ass spoke 1" " Wa'al,"
says Jonathan, "I ray t her guess as how that
Balaam was a stutteria' man, and his ass had
to speak for him !"
Sam Slick savs : -I believe every critter
in the world thinks he is the most entertaiuin'
one in it, and there's no gettin' on anyhow
without him. Conceit grows as natural as the
hair on oues head, but is longer in coimn out
Good Advice. Never abuse one who was
once your bosom friend, however bitter now
Never hire servants who go in pairs as sisters,
cousins, or anything else. Never speak con
temptuously ol womankind.
Aunt Betsy has said many good things
among the rest, that a newspaper is like a wife,
because every man ought to have one of his
own. Aunt Betsy was right that time.

A CARD FROM DR. JAMES 31. JAR
RETT, OF THE NEW-YORK LUNG IN
FIRMARY. My connection for the past eight
vears with the above Institution, as Chief Physi
cian, and a twelve years course of steady devotion
to the Cure of Pulmonary Consumption und its
kindred diseases, together with my unrivalled op
portunities and advantage of pathological research
aided not a little by a perfect system of Medical
Inhalation has enabled me to arrive at a deci
sive, direct, and successful course of treatment for
the positive and radical cure of all diseases of the
1 irout, Liangs, and Air-passages. By Inhalation
the vapor and curative properties of medicines are
directly addressed to the diseased organsof the in
tegument. I do not advise the use of Medical In
halation of any kind, to the exclusion of general
treatment ; and although 1 consider it a useful ad
juvant in the proper management of those fearful
and often fatal discas;s. vet I deem it very neces
sary that each patiant should have tho benefit of
both general and local treatment, the success ot
my treatment in the above diseases, and the high
character of tho Institution over which I have so
long had the honor to preside, are too well known
to need any eulogy or comment from me. At the
solicitation of many private and professional
friends, through whose philanthropic aid the above
charity has been long and liberally supported. and
after duo consideration, 1 have concluded to make
such arrangements as will bring the benefits of my
experience and treatment within the reach ot all,
and not confine myself, as heretofore, to those on
ly who entered the Infirmary, or who were able to
visit me at my office. Hoping therefore that the
arrangement will give entire satisfaction, both to
my professional brethren and the public, I would
respectfully annonnce in conclusion, that lean
now be consulted tiersouallu or by letter, on all dis
eases as above, and that the medicines, tho same as
used in the Institution, prepared to suit each in
dividual case. Inhaling V a pars. Medical Inha
lers, -c, tVe . will be forwarded by express to any
part or the United States or the Canada. Tkrus
My terms of treatment by letter are as follows,
viz : S12 per month for each patient, which will
include medicine sufficient for one month's use;
also. Inhaling Vapor, and an Inhaling Apparatus.
Payment as follows: S to be paid to Express A
gent on receipt of the box of Medicine, and the
balance S6 at the expiration of tho month, if the
patient bo cured or is entirely satisfied with the
treatment. Patients, by giving a full history of
thcircase, and their symptoms in full, can bo treat
ed as well by letter as by personal examination.
Patients availing themselves of Dr. Jarrett's treat
ment may rely upon immediate and permanent
relief, as he seldom has to treat a ca.se over thirty
days. Letters for advice promptly answered. For

MpiIE GREATEST BIOGRAPHY OF
JL THE AGE. NOW READY: THE
LIFE OP THOMAS JE b PERSON, bv Hen
ry fi. Rnudall, LL. J). In 3 volumes, oct iun.
This work contains upwardsof 2.000 pages, is prin
ted on one paper, ana handsomely bound in va
rious styles. It is illustrated by several engrav
ings on steol, and numerous fur similes ; anion'
the former are two fine portraits of Jefferson. Th
fae similes embrace, among others, the original
dratt of the Declaration of Independence, in Jef
ferson's own hand-writing.
This is, in every sense, an authorized wnrl-: it
was undertaken under the approbation of his fam
ily, and with an unreserved access to all tho pri
vate papers of Jefferson in their possession; and
has received tho benefit of their recollections and
opinions at every step.
The work contains the expressions of Jefferson
on every great public question which aroe. from
his advent to public life to his death a period of
auuuisiiijr years, ana emoraemg the whole form
ing period of tho Republic. It contains Jeffer
son's heretofore unpublished family corresnnn.
dencc ; selections from hi3 finest published lotto,-..
state papers, etc., etc , etc.
OPINIONS OF TII12 PRESS.
''No other Life of Jefferson ever nnhlishl
probably none that ever will bo published can
ear any comparison to this in thorouirness. full
ness of incident and conscientious fidelity
This biography has evidently been a labor of love'
and the years of patient, assiduous toil it has cost'
have been given with ungrudging, untiring enthu
siasm." -rw-lorl: Tribune.
"At length the public have a Life of Tb
fcrson that is not only fascinating, and therefore
suro to be popular, bu' one that will stand th
scntial historic test that of accuracy and truth
fulness. It is seen that the ground-work of the
whole is authentic cotemporary material, and of
the highest order. Togathcr it has been the work
of years. AVe would not comnare this vr.lnmo f.-itli
that inimitable and incomparable biography of
Boswcll, and yet so faithful is the nortraiture that
Jefferson is made to draw of himself, that his na
ture, his very soul, lsdcliuiatcd with a distinct
ness not unlike that in which Johnson stands out
in the pages of Boswell.'" Boston Post.
"Imbued with that enthusiastic admiration of
his subject, without which a biographer is rarely
successful, Mr. Randall nevertheless does not seek
to hide whatever faults he may find, cither from
himself or from the reader. He prints the picture
as Cromwell insisted his should be painted, "warts
and all." The picture gains by this in life-like
coloring, without losing any 01 us majestic propor
tions." Albany Evening Journal.
"No one who runs his eye, however casually, o-
ver this work, will fail to be satisfied that Mr. Ran
dall has added very largely to the stock of tho
world's information about Jefferson, that he has
had access to sourcos hitherto unexplored, and that
he has done more than was ever done bv any ono
before him to illustrate the personality of that
great statesman.'' N. Y. Evening Post.
"We have read with delight Mr. Randall's cap
tivating details of Mr. Jefferson's personal history,
which ho has seduously gathered, and admirably
grouped together, from a great variety of authen
tic sources, hitherto unexplored. Out of the tempt
ing richness of his materials, the able and clear
sighted author has constructed a book, at once most
entertaining and instructive one that should bo
studied hj every patriot of the land." Rich
mond, I'z., Enquirer.
"There can be only one opinion as to the abili
ty, general impartiality and industry which Mr.
Randall has brought into combination in the com
position of this biography He has
worthily executed a much wanted book." Phil
adelphia Press.
"It will take place among the choicest classics
of American liWtature, and be consulted by eve
ry future historian of this country." Philadel
phia Evening Bulletin..
"We like it because it neither conceals, palliates,
exaggerates, nor distorts, but approaches, in every
instance, and in every particular, the career of
the noble character whose opinions have done so
much to shape the domestic and foreign policy of
the notion he contributed so greatly to call into
existence.". O. Trut DMa.
