Satajt Hakes a Mistake. Old Bobtail was 1
an uncommonly good man, but in his old age
be became impatient of the world and anxious
to be at rest. He was often tempted to drown
himself. One morning about two o'clock, hia
son was awakened by bis father calling out :
"Abel r Abel ! Satan has been tempting me
all night to go and drown myself in the horse
pond." -
"Well, then, father, Satan must be a great
fool, for there hasn't been a drop of water in
it for six weeks.'
The old gentleman turned over, went to
sleep, and never woke nntil the sun was two
hours high.
Self Respect. Keep np a good opinion of
yourself not a vain one, but a good solid res
pect, which shall stimulate you to higher and
purer thoughts, words and actions. The man
who relies on his own respect will never be
mean, tor though nobody else ever knows of
it, be himself will, and that should be enough
to deter him from petty deeds.
Tekbible Political Fight. At the elec
tion on Thursday a-week, in Nash county, X
C, a difficulty occurred, which resulted in a
mn named Perry killing another named
Brantly, after which a frieuj of Brantly slew
Perry.
Bask Chaxbeb.9bcbg. Petersson's De
tector says : Beware of a new and dangerous
counterfeit $10 bill that has just been in cir-
oulation. It is an imitation of the genuine,
and is exceedingly well done.
"Mr. Jenkins, will it suit you to settle that
Id account of yours ?"
"No, Sir; you are mistaken in the man
I am not one of the old settlers."
, "Madam," said a rude fellow to a lady, "I
guess yon have got a stye in your eye."
"Worse than that, sir; I have got a hog; in
it," said she, looking straight at him.

The. Great Library Offer. Agents Getting Rich !
The union of EMERSON'S MAGAZINE and
PUTNAM'S MONTHLY has given to the consoli
dated work a circulation second to but one similar
publication in the country, and has secured for it
a combination ot literary ana artistic taieni proo
ably unrivalled by any other magazine in the
world. During the first month, the sale in the trade
and demand from subscribers exceeded 90.000 co-
Dies, and the numbers already issued of the con
solidated work are universally conceded to have
surpassed, in the richness of their literary contents,
and the beauty and profuseness of their pictorial
illustrations, any magazine ever before issued from
the American oress. Encouraged by these eviden
ces of favor, the publishers have determined to
commence the new volume in January with still
additional attractions, and to offer such induce
ments to subscribers as cannot laii to piace it, in
circulation, at the head of American magazines.
With this view they now announce the following
splendid programme. They have purchased that
superb and costly steel-plate engraving,
"THE LAST SUPPER,"
and will present a copy of it to every three-dollar
subscriber for tho year 1858. It was engraved at
a cost of over S6-0U0, by the late celebrated A. L.
Dick, from the original of Raphael Morghen, after
Leonardo Da Vinci, and Is the largest steel-plate
engraving ever executed in this country, being
three times the size of theordinary $3 engravings.
The first impressions of this engraving are held
at $10, and it was the intention of the artist that
none of the engravings should ever be offered for
a less sum than $5, being richly worth that amount.
Thus every three-dollar subscriber will receive
the Magazine one year cheap at $3 and this
splendid engraving, richly worth 55 ; thus get
ting for S3 the value of Eight dollars.
We shall commence striking off the engravings
immediately, yet it can hardly be expected that
impressions of so large a plato can be taken as fast
as they will be called for hy subscribers. Weshall,
therefore, furnish them in the orler in which sub
scriptions are received Those who desire to ob
tain their engravings early, and from the first im
pressions, should send in their snbscriptions with
out delay The engraving can bo sent on rollers,
by mail, or in any other manner, as subscribers
shall order.
20,000 IN WORKS OF ART.
In addition to the superb engraving of :THE
LAST SLPPER," which will be presented so ever
ry three-dollar subscriber for 1858. the publishers
have completed arrangementc for the distribution,
on the 25th day of December, 1858, of a series of
splendid works of art. consisting of one hundred
rich and rare Old Paintings, valued at from S100
to 1.000 each. Also, 2,000 magnificcntStccl-plate
Engravings, worth from S3 to $5 each, and 1,000
choice Holiday Books, worth from SI to $5 each,
making, in all. over THREE THOUSAND GIFTS,
w. rth TWENTY THOUSAND DOLLARS.
Incloie S3 to the publishers and you will com
mence receiving tho Magazine by return mail.
You will also receive with the first copy a num
bered subscription receipt entitling you to the En
graving of "THE LAST SUPPER," and a chance
to draw one of these "Three Thousand Prizes."
REASOMS WIIV VOU SHOl"LI SRItSCRIBE FOR
EMERSON'S MAGAZINE FOR 1838.
First: Because its literary contents will.during
the year, embrace contributions from over one
hundred different writers ami tninkcrs, num
bering among them the most distinguished of A
meriuun authors.
Second: Because itseditorial departments. '-Our
Studio," "OurWindow." and '-Our Olio," will each
be conducted by an able edisor and it will sur
pass, in the variety and richness of its editorial
contents, any other magazine.
Third: Because it will contain, during tho year,
nearly six thousand original pictorial illustrations
from designs by tho first American artists.

the 25th day of December. 1858 perhaps one
that is worth One Thousand Dollars.
