Committed. Two men named Hiram and
Jonathan Hemans wcro lodged in our county
jail on last Sunday, on a clmrgo of being im
plicated in tho robbery of Wm. Irvin's storo
in Curwensville, several weeks since. Tho
store was broken into on tho night of Saturday
the 21th April, and a lot of clothing, a rifltf
un and a shot gun wero among tho articles
known to be stolen. Several articles of the
clothing were found in the possession of per
sons to whom one of the men arrested La 1
sold them. Hiram intimates that the robbery
was committed by two or three of his boys,
who have left for parts unknown.
Alieced House Thief C.vicur. On Sun
day last, a niau named Francis Peters was
brought to this place and lodged in the county
jail, charged with stealing a horse from Mr. B.
L. Davenport, of Fox township, some ten days
ago. Peters, it seems, sold the horse to a Mr.
Coigrove, residing on Potato creek in McKean
county, and hail returned to this county, when
he was apprehended. Mr. Davenport has re
covered the horse.
Mabie & Crosby's French and American cir
cus, as will bo seen by an advertisement in to
day's paper, is to exhibit in Clearfield Boro',
on Tuesday the 8thJitie. Some of our ex
changes speak of it as a largo and well ap
pointed company, and same of the actors are
of well-known reputation. This will be a fine
opportunity for getting rid of loose quarters
and having a "good time" generally.
Oh his ows Hook. Tho law partnership
heretofore existing between Wm. A. Wallace
and Robert J. Wallace has been dissolved, as
will Lo seen by a notice in our advertising col
umns. 'Bob' has opened out in tho east end
of tho county buildings, where he is ready to
receive clients and attend to all business with
which he ma- be favored.
Ixjuued. On last Thursday, Ai F. Boyn
ton, son of Jonathan Boynton, Esq., of our
borough, whilst about leading a horso to the
blacksmith shop, was severely cut and bruised
about tho head by being jerked to the ground
by the horse, which had become frightened by
some means. The young man's injuries are
mending rapidly, we are gkd to state.
Attention is directed to the advertisements
of Wm. Irvin, of Curwensville, who has open
ed an extensive assortment of Spring and Sum
mer Goods, at the "corner store," which he
will dispose of on the most reasonable terms.
Scdden Death. On Monday forenoon, A
braham IIcss, Sr., of Lawrence township, was
attacked by apoplexy, whilst busy in a corr
field, aud died during the course of tho after
noon. He was a man of 70 or t0 years of age.
We direct the attention of our readers at
Grahamton to the advertisement of James B.
Graham in another column. The 'squire is
determined to sell goods as low for cash as
they can be purchased anywhere in the county.
John Patton, of Curwensville, has received
and opened a large stock of Seasonable Goods,
which he offers to the public at reduced prices.
Sec advertisement.
A Sensible Thing from Mr. Eveeett.
Edward Everett, in a letter apologizing for
not attending the dedication of a new school
house, closes his letter thus:
"We must not rest satisfied with a general
impression that our schools ara in a very satis
factory condition. There is some danger thai
showv accomplishments, such as declamation
and English composition often prematurely
attempted and dramatic exhibitions which
seem to me wholly out of place at school
will occupy the time and thoughts of teachers
and pupils, to the neglect ot thorough ms.ruc
tion in reading, writing, arithmetic, grammar,
geography, history, and Christian morality,
and other branches of a soild English edu
cation."
Vert Encouraging. The Harrisburg cor
respondent of "The Press" gives this bit of
encouragement to the friends of the democrat
ic candidate for Judge of the Supremo Court,
residing in the eastern part of the Stale :
"The signs everywhere in the West indicate
that if Hon. William A. Porter is opposed by
a lawyer of cood reputation, and running upon
principles antagonistic to the anti-Democratic
platform laid down by the lato Harrisburg
Convention, he will be beaten out of sight
this fall, aud his chances of political resurrec
tion will bo delayed to tho time appointed for
Gabriel to blow his horn V

paid thereon, at lite Court House in
the Borough cf Clearfield, on the Sec

It'is said, that, at tho very lowest estimate,
Kansas has already cost this country fifty mil
lions of dollars in money to say nothing ot
the startling estimate of moral evils, that gi
gantic instalment of political leprosy, which
the Kansas agitation will leave as a legacy to
the American people. Such arc the bitter and
baneful lruits of tho repeal of the Missouri
compromise. Who was right we, who with
all our strength resisted that wretched meas
ure, or our opponents who advocated it asa
great measure of peace and harmony and uni
