CLEARFJELD, PA., APRIL 21, 1858.
Mr.

- -j.ti liuiat. ini iioiei, situate in
Lumber City, ClearCeld county, has been ta.
Ken by our Iriond L. W. Ten Eyck. The liouse
is large and well adapted for the accommoda
tion of guests, and as Lew. is a clever, atten
tive and accommodating fellow generally we
nave no aouDi oi ins making an excellent
landlord, or that he will keep the best kind of
a hotel, and that all who stop with him will
tare well. We direct attention to his card in
our advertising columns.
Tiik Limber Trade. The great bulk or the
lumber prepared during the past winter in this
county, passed down the Susquehanna last
wetK. l Here are some rafts back yet, but
their number is small. The number that will
reach market this season will bo a little short
cf last year's product. Jn consequence of the
general depression of business during the last
eight or ten months, it is not to be expected
that great activity will manifest itself in the
market, and it is altogether probable that pri
ces will be low. Still, if the sales are gener
ally lor cast, times will soon brighten up in
our county.

Kow : Dear Sir : In examining tlm U.t
o .
annual report of the State Superintendent of
Common bchools, I see that the Directors in
some of the Districts in our county havo com-
lllitfofl ;l II ormp Zn I : . .
ui.in.iug oui ineir annual re
port to the Superintendent, which shows care
1 . . . . .
icosueBM, ii not something worse. Thns the
Districts ot Beccaria, Burnside and Perm, set
down the total number of scholars for the rcr
age, which is clearly the opposite of what the
Department requires. There is also some
mistake in the returns from Bradford, Girard
and Huston. These can be nothing more than
mistakes', because it is not reasonable to sup
pose mat ttie scholars in the above named dis
incis na e au erery day attended school. The
State Superintendent's Report shows the orer-
ige number of scholars attending school in
nuicu oi course is
wrong by the above districts giving the total
number instead of the average. It is clearly
the ttesign of the Department to furnish col
lect and authentic data for all practical purpo
ses, in everything relating to our school sys
icm, aim it is wie duty or Directors to furnish
the same with correct Reports. I am sorry to
flee that our county is not the only one at fault
instance the Report of Allegheny county,
which shows that the tctal number of scholars
in that county is set down as 2G,4SJ, while the
average is 2S,CSj, thus making the average
over 200 greater than the total , which is situ
ply ridiculous. If the numbers are reversed,
the dittcrence would nevertheless be too small
T . .
i nope ior me saKe ot our county that the
same mistakes, or any others, will not bo com.
mitted over again. The mistake, or careless
ness if yon please, is so easily avoided, and
equally so detected,' that should anv of the
Directors furnish our gentlemanly County Su
perintendent with like Reports for the ensu
ing year, I hope he will send them back to
llieui lor correction. Let other counties do
as they please; as for us, let us do right, es
pccialiy when it is so easily and cheaply done,
being no inconvenience to eilher health or
capital. I am a warm friend of general edu
cation, believing it to be the only true source
d happiness and peace to us as a people, and
the only principle that will uphold us as a na
tion. I have therefore no further counsel to
give in this matter, except that the several
school districts in our county will hereafter
avoid the aforementioned mistake.

of the Marnetta and Cincinnati, Railroad,
eome time ago, for inviting a friend to ride
over the road with him, as lie did not like to
ride in the train alone, has leen re-employed
by the superintendant. But we see he is aga in
the hero of another adventure, w hich has been
wade public. The newspapers say (and what
they say must be true, you know) that on a
recent trip the train of which this couductor
Jiad charge overtook a cripple, limping along
by the side ot the track, when our hero, the
conductor, kindly invited him to get on and

Hnd replied that he would rather not, as he
was t'i a hurry. That conductor thiuks seri

Frightful consequences are likely to ensue
along the lower Mississippi, which is now high
er in some places than was ever known, bj
the accession of combined floods coming from
the upper rivers. The Mississippi is rising
from St. Paul, the lower Missouri and Illinois
livers are both high and rising ; all their trib
utaries are at flood height. The high water
is occasioned by heavy rains extending through
the whole Western and Northwestern country
and not by the usual Spring mountain rise ;
should that follow before the freshet flood sub
sides, the whole of the lower country will
doubtless be inunnated.
