Editor or Raftsman's Jocksal : The fol
lowing, from the lion. II. C. Hickok. Super
intendent of Common Schools, taken from the
Softool Journal, is deemed ol such practical im
portance to Teachert, Directors, and tit friends
cf Education, that I send it to you for inser
tion in the Educational Department of your
piper:
."Teachers Institutes. The duty of Teach
ers to attend Institutes is not less imperative
than the obligation of Superintendents to hold
them, and is to be taken lor granted. 'Live'
teachers who love their profession, realize its
hopefnl and cheering future, and are awake 10
the magnitude of its responsiltties, will need
no prompting from any quarter, in regard to
iD3titules; hut will hail any opportunity thus
offered, for improvement and genial inter
course with theii- fellow laborers. Mechanical
teachers, whose capacity or amuition is limi
ted to the assignment of lessons from the
printed page, to be conned and recited by the
efforts of a verbal memory, without reference
to ideas or principles ; and who pursue their
calling as an occasional trade, merely for ti'.e
Income it yields, will scrupulously avoid In
stitutes and Associations; but their numbers
are rapidiv thinning, and but a very few years
" will elapse until they will bo driven from the
field, and their places supplied with the faith
ful and competent."
"Post mortem Examinations. It appears that
Teachers are still in the habit of teaching
without a certificate, and after their term is
out, applyiDg for a certificate in order to get
their wages. This practice is illegal and for
feits both the teacher's wages and the State
appropriation to the district employing them.
Superintendents are not at liberty to grant cer
tificates nnder such circumstances, or for such
a purpose. Every such application should be
reported to the Department, giving the name
of the Teacher, an 1 the name of the President
or Secretary of the District."
These remarks of our worthy State Super
intendent should bo carefully perused. Of
that class ct teachers, who feel no interest to
attend Teachers' Institutes and Associations,
but who make teaching a business for the time
being merely, or principally, for the profit it
affords, he but too justly predicts the doom.
Before the onward march of educational im
provement they must give way, and their pla
ces be supplied by better ones; and they ought
to give way to better ones, so will say every
parent, patron and friend of education, and
every good and faithful toucher nay, they
themselves must utter the amen.
In regard to t;post mortem examination;!,"
we announce it as our intention strictly to fol
low the State Superintendent's directions
e will hold no post mortem examinations of
teachers. Those teachers must iorft.it their
wages who teach without a certificate, and the
Districts employing them, the State appropri
ation, for we shall report as the State Superin
tendent has requested, should any such case
or cases ocenr. Wo think, however, we shall
have no occasion lor the performance of this
sad duty, although the warning note is not out
of place. L. L. Still, Co. Supt.

Mk. Editor : Tho adoption of a series of
books by the School Directors of the several
districts throughout the county, with a strong
effort on their part to effect their introduction
into the schools, is a subject which I think is
too much neglected. At a convention ol
School Directors held in Clearfield on the jth
of June last, alter a careful examination of
sample copies, and a free and, I trust, profita
ble discussion of the suhject, a series of book3
were recommended. This ILL may or may not
be adopted in tola, in every district ; Lut it is
certainly very important that each and every
Board of School Directors in the county should
adopt and establish a system or series of bo jks,
to be used in tlu schools. It must be appa
rent to every observer, that the advantages to
be derived from such a course, over the old,
and to a considerable est. nt still existing
practice of each scholar having his or her own
set of book3, regardless of ail ordir or classi
fication with others, would be very great, not
only to the scholars, but to the teacher, whos?
time might be greatly economized thereby.
The time has come when great changes aro
to be wrought in the manner of conducting
onr schools ; old and worn-out rules are to be
set aside, and new and practical theories to be
adopted, and wherever Directors do their du
ty, with the aid of the County Superindency,
this important lact will be demonstrated, that
unr common school sysleni is built upon an in
destructible foundation, and is destined logo
on prospering and to prosper, with Progression
for its watchword, till cavillers will be silenced
by the happy and wide-spread influence of so
great and ennobling an institution. J. K.

Manj' persons like to use what arc generally
termed "big words." This is wrong. Sim
plicity of csprcssion is always desirable. The
absurdity of using uncommon words is mani
fested in the following language said to bo em
ployed by a Professor in one of our Universi
ties :
"Viewing this subject from the esoteric
stand-point of Christian exegetic.il analysis,
and agglutinating the polsynthetical cctoblasts
of homogeneous asceticism, wc perceive at
once the absolute individuality of this entity;
while from that other stand-point of incredu
lous synthesie, which characterise the Xeno
cratic hierarchy of the Jews we are constantly
impressed with the precisely antiperistatic
quality thereof."
"Clear as mud," that! Isn't it 1

sophistry if he is determined that he will be.
A fellow can be drowned in a kettle of water
if ho will lie down and keep big month and
