A whole summer is wrapped up in that pea. A whole summer spent its time about that ear of com. It came forth small as a needle., It stood tremulous and yellow for weeks, it waxed apace in Jane, it stood up the noblest of grasses in August, with a many-fringed band of flowers on its lap, and with a little baby ear on its breast, with silken hair hanging down uncombed yet un tangled, spotted and powdered with pollen. This is the time to wander in corn ! 1 ou are hidden at six steps. It is a pet forest. Peo ple ride past and wagons roll within a few rods of you, and yon are unseeing and unseen The wind comes ia gentle pufls, and sets all the pliant sword leaves a-qnake. Little birds that do not know that you are there, fly in and alight within hand reach, but at a glance, see ing their mistake, fly as if the tassal was hot and burned their feet ! We see. all that, in those barrels of Tuscarora corn, in that white flint corn, and in that yard-long ear of"ycllow flint. H. If. Beecher. Down with tue Weeds. Have you ever considered how much ruin to future farm crops lies in the patch of weeds yonder ? They are sapping the land now, but this nothing in comparison with their future his tory. It is perhaps a group of thistles. Pull off ono of those ripening heads, and count if you ean, the number of seeds wrapped up like arrows in a quiver. Every one of these seeds is provided with a feathery tail, that will expand and float seeds in the air, like a bal loon. Tha seeds in that sinzle thistle head will probably be scattered over twenty acres before the snow falls. And every plant has some curious provisions for scattering seeds far and wide. Some are so light they float in the air, others will jnst float in . water. th winter rains carrv Ithem to a ereat di3 tance from their birthplace. The only safe guard against the spread of weeds is the e ternal vigilance of the farmer. Cut up the weeds, by the roadside, under the walls, in the gardens, on the manure heap, in the corn field, everywhere. At no future time can you abate this nuisance so easy as now. KFAt a festival which recently came off in Niagara county, a boy who did not have a fair chance at the eatables, said some of the vora cious visitors had been starving themselves so long in anticipation of the feast, that they were hollow all the way down, and he could hear the first mouthful they swallowed striko on the bottom of their boots !
