THE JOURNAL.
CLEARFIELD, PA., MAT 6,183
Ret. Mm. Gallowat will preach In the Pres
byterian church in Curwcnsville 011 next Sab
bath at 11 o'clock a. An., and in Clearfield bor
ough at 5 o.'clock p. m.
Special Attention is directed to the adver
tisement of Geddes, Marsh & Co., who are
receiving a large stock of Dry Goods, Groce
ries, Hardware, Qnecnsware, &c, at their store
at Bucna Vista,, in Bell tow nship.
Fits. We regret to learn that the dwelling
luuse of Mr. John M. Chase, in Woodward tp.,
was destroyed by fire on last Wednesday. By
tho most highly commendable efforts of Mrs.
Chase and another female, most of the con
tents of the house, a's well as tho books, pa
pers, &-.., of Mr.C. wcro saved. The fire ori
ginated from the stove pipe. Mr. Chase is
one of our most deserving lumbermen, and
bis loss will be regretted by every good cit
izen. Loo Floati.no is regarded in this county in
the light of a nuisance, and many efforts have
been made to have it restricted by law so as
not to interfere with tho running of raits of
timber and lumber but the Legislature has
been no tardy in acting upon the bill before H
that our raftsmen bavo been subjected to this
annoyance another season. Heretofore they
have borno it ns meekly aa they could, but it
seems with some "forbcaranco has ceased to
bo a virtue," and they havo determined to ap
ply a corrective themselves. Accordingly, on
Clearfield creek, we understand, the logs with
which the stream is literally filled, are being
cut up in such a manner as to render them
worthless, whilst on other streams tiiey are
driven full of spikes, pieces of pot metal, &c,
and it is not at all improbable that still more
cxlromo measures may be adopted, as many of
our people aro in a state of high exasperation.
Hostilities Commenced. The raftmcn of
Clearfield creek, having failed to obtain re.
dress for the wrongs inflicted upon them by
floating saw logs, as a last resort determined
to take the law . into their own bands and abate
the nuisance by force of arms. On Thursday
the 30th ult., they met at Clearfield Bridge,
and constituted themselves a vigilance com
mittee, by selecting proper oliiccrs and organ
izing In companies. On tho 1st of May ono
of these companies, armed with rifles, shot
guns and axes, under command of Captains
Clino and Fiscus, marched to Driftwood Is
land, about 13 miles above this place, where
they encountered a superior force of floaters.
Notwithstanding the disparity of numbers, the
raftmcn attacked the floaters and fur some
time fought desperately, maintaining tho une
qual conflict until the arrival of reinforcements,
when the floaters were driven from the field
three of their number having fallen in tho con
flict, seriously though not mortally wounded.
But for the exertions of somo of tho raftmcn,
many of tho floaters would bavo lost their
lives as tho passions of the former were rous
ed to the highest pitch. After tho fight the
cabin ( tho floaters was destroyed, but they
were allowed to take away their carpet bags
and clothing upon promise being given to quit
tho business. Thirty-three gavo tho required
promise and departed in peace. Tho raf'tmen
are still under arms, determined to drive eve
ry floater from the creek. Rep. 0 Saturday.
A number of log-floaters were in town on
Monday and niado information against 4" per
sons on a charge of riot, and, we understand,
warrants for t ho arrest of tho latter have been
issued.

Hinti Watf.e. Last Friday night rain began
falling copiously in this section of country and
continued during Saturday with little inter
mission. On Sunday a very large number of
rafts Irom above came down. On Monday
morning tho rain again commenced falling ra
pidly and raised the Sus'iuchatin"a so high that
it endangered tho running of rafts. Yester
day (Tuesday) the water overflowed the
banks, and tho flood has doubtless done
considerable damage. Tho bridges across tho
small streams ore mostly swept away and will
intercept travel. The Sinnemahoning coach
we observed returning yesterday morning, a
short timo after it had (started from this place,
being unable to proceed on account of the
bridges being carried away. It was feared
that tho bridge across Clearfield creek, two
miles east of this borough, would bo carried
off, as one of the abutments had been dama
ged ; but we believe it is safe. A great quan
tity of drift was running, and we observed a
number of timber sticks, rails, &c, floating
down tho stream. We have not heard of any
rafts being adrift. Last night tho water in the
river fell somo 20 inches, arid if it continues
to fall at this rate for 24 hours, rafts can bo
run from here on to-morrow.

The Pay of School Siterimendexts.
It seems by a correspondence recently publish
ed in the official department of the School Jour
nal, between the StateSuperintendent of Com
mon Schools, and Messrs. Holcomb, Laport
and Piatt, members of the Legislature, that
there has been a misunderstanding in the
minds of many, with regard to the disburse
ment of the salaries ofCountySuperintendents.
The clause ot' the SGth section of tho Act of
8th of May, 1854, in reference thereto, has
been construed so as to mean, that tbo salar
ies of these officers are first paid, and then the
apportionment of the State appropriation is
made to the several counties. This is not cor
rect iu the opinion of tho State Superinten
dent. That officer says : "The annual appro
priation to the school districts of the respec
tive counties, is not affected by tho salaries of
the County Superintendents."
The Poisininq at Washington. It is now
believed that not less than seven hundred per
sons have been seriously and dangerously af
fected by the National Hotel poison, at Wash
ington ; and some twenty or thirty deaths
have occurred in consequence. Among oth
ers, the Hon. Robert J. Walker is not yet en
tirely recovered from bis severe attack. Sen
ator Hale, of New Hampshire, has become a
thin, lean man under its ravages. It is now
tho opinion of many persons that there was a
deliberate purpose to poison Mr. Buchanan ;
and that the diabolical scoundrel hazarded tho
lives of thousands iu the attempt. It is the
opinion of some that Mi. Buchanan will not
survive long, as it is said that his legs and
voice aro weak aud that he totters.
Tho panic in St. Paul's and St. Peter's,
Minnesota, arising from the rumors of a gen
eral rising of tho Indians at the North, has
subsided. The Superintendents of Indian Af
fairs announce in letters to papers or tho Ter
ritory, that the payment of tho moneys due the
Indians will settle all the troubles, and that
the force detailed for the protection of life
and property is not needed. The reported,
massacre of the settlers in Northern Minneso
ta is now said to have been confounded with
that which happened in Iowa some time since.
