Katts Stot: A Mam probablt drowklc.
Wo understand that on last Sunday four rafts
ere "sfoveil" at what is known as the "Big
Fitch," which ia the roughest piece of wafer
in the mountains. It seems that one which
-ifr. Samuel Schaffher was running got out of
the course and awnng straight across. Anoth
er, ia the care of Mr. Daniel Ogden, one of
the best pilots on the river, was so close that
he was compelled to strike the first one about
the middle, which broke it in two. Mr. Og
den's raft passed safely through the nperture,
tmt a couple sticks of the broken raft getting
under Lis, rendered it unmanageable, and it
ran with such force against tLe rocks on the
right hand shore that it was torn to pieces, no
two sticks remaining together. Mr. Ogden
had previously warned the other hands of their
danger, and when the raft struck they suc
ceeded in jumping on the shore, rocks, with
the exception of Mr. James Flanagan, a citi
xen of this place, who was thrown into the cur
rent and carried down the stream. When last
seen, he was struggling to keep hold of a tim
ber stick, find as nothing has been heard of
him since, it is generally believed that he was
drowned. He was a good swimmer, but it is
cry probable that he received some injuries
which disable:! him.
"Loxo Looked for Come at Last." Last
Friday morning the anxiously awaited "rai
ny season" set in here, and on Saturday
morning there was a tolertbly good rafting
lieshet in flic river. A large number of rafts
passed this place dunug Saturday, Sunday and
Monday, and by the end or this week many
vill have reached Marietta and other down riv
er to .rns. Yesterday the water was too low a
g.in to run rafts.

Hlt is said that a schoolmaster of Last

on a rail last week by a party of young ladies,
because he refused them the use of his room
for a kinging school. Warrants were issued
for the arrest of the girls.

fXF-The Austin (Texas) Gazette contains an
account of the arrest of a desperate villain,
named Johnson, near Waco. He had previ
ously killed no less than seven men. ITe was
arrested after he had wounded several citizens,

mortally wounded. lie had fortified himself

C7"The abbe McMastcr, of the Freeman's
Journal, is an applicant for the mission to
Rome. The chief recommendation put foi
ward for him is the fact that he wrote three or
four "private" letters for publication, pitch
ing into Fremont's religion, during the canvass
last fall, accusing Fremont of being a Catholic.
It is curious and kind of the Abbe to apply to

presume is to be recalled.
CyVillage of women. The Augsburg Ga

period the female population was two hundred.
The ladies are not warriors like the Amazons
of old, but have avoided all intercourse with
men, and drive from their territory all who

C7A Rich Case. Memphis, Tcnucssee, is
decidedly a great place, in its way. A few
days since a case was pending in the Common
Law Court of that city, in which a Mr. and
Mrs. llelbing had sued Philip R. Bohlen, for
breach of Marriage contract, in failing to mar
ry Mrs. llelbing, when she was Miss Agnes
Handworker, and the jury has given the injur
ed parties $1,250 damages. The idea of llel
bing sueing Bohlen because he did not marry
his wife, is certainly the richest thing of this
fast age.
C?.Xot a finality. We had thought that
the Dred Scott decision had finally settled the
question with regard to who are citizens. But,
we were badly mistaken. Eli S. Parker, re
cently appointed as superintendent of the gov
ernment buildings at Catena, is said to be an
Indian. Hence, in view of this apparent scar
city of whites in the dominant party, we hope
our nigger-worshipping friends will not be in
such haste to destroy themselves. There is
some hope for the black man yet. Don't des
pair !
Holloway's Pills, an extraordinary Remedy

most excessively for eight years and a half
from termination of blood to the head, so bad
at times that she would fall down in crossing a
room as if dead. Stic consulted three differ
ent phyiicians, and studiously followed their
advice, which however failed to benefit her,
and her dissolution was hourly expected. At
this time she tried Holloway's Pills, which
quickly did the work, by removing from the
system alt tile noxious matter, carrying off the
bad fluids, and left her in the enjoyment of
perfect health, her friends have all been aston
ished at the apparent transformation, yet all
this has been effected by Holloway's Pills.

the recipe of a regular physician, who during a
practice of twenty-five years, used it with unpar

rant remedies, simple in their character and used
by every educated physician. It is easily taken,
produces no nausea or other disagrceable effocts,
and gives almost immediute relief. In this ever
cbanging climate, where coughs and colds so fre
quently end in consumption and death, no family
should be without this ceutais ccni:. .
It would be easy to follow in the wake of the ven
ders of patent medicine, and multiply certificates
got up for the occasion, of miraculous cures, but no
such adventitious aid is necessary in introducing
this preparation to the public. Its real value, and
never failing success, in accomplishing all promis

recommend it to all those afflicted with diseases for
which it is a remedy. I'nre 371 Cents per Bottle.
