On last Mon day, the notorious Bucher Swope, pretty well known here as "the skunk," without provoca tion, assaulted the editor of this paper, en the street, in a very ruffianly manner, calcula ting, prolably, to demolish us at one fell ucoop. The "valiant" assailant, however, had overrated his own physical strength, and oen found himself sprawling in the gutter, (a very appropriate place for him,) after hav ing performed some very amusing feats in ground and loity tumbling. " After picking i.iii'self up, he pitched at us again, when we planted our fist in and about his eyes so efl'ec- t"-t!!y as to blicken one of them very beauti fully. EniTon : The time for giving notice, that a County Superintend int is to b elected vn the first Monday cf May next by a Conven tion of the School Directors of the county, has not arrived, but would it not be well at this time to call the attention of the directors and the public to that fact ? Several gentlemen will make application for the post, and from nmong them the directors wi'.l be required to select one of literary and scientilic acquire ineiita and of skill and experience in the art cf teaching, to serve for three years. To elect a person competent and willing to perform the duties ot the office is the duty of the direc ton, and will advance the eause of education. To elect one wanting cither of those requisites is to squander the public money and bring our common school system into disrepute. I would suggest to the Directors to admit no person, not entitled to a scat, to the convention during Its sitting, and in order to test the competen cy of those who apply for the situation to ex .uutine all applicants. l't.NX.
