Dear reader Having the statement, &c, of
our common schools published in the above
manner Is here something new; bnt I firmly
believe that was it a general custom, educa
tion at this time would be in a more flourish
ing condition. Every one who has attended a
tfgh school knows with what zeal even the
most stupid student labors, that he maybe
honored by a high standing in the catalogue of
the institution ol which he is a member. And
if young men and women would toil with such
diligence, what would be the imprest exer
cised by the boys and girls of our common
schools f Upon opening this school, I classed
lay scholars most conveniently, and kept a
daily- record of their recitation and deport
ment, telling them that I intended having the
results published.' This animated every pupil
far beyond my expectations, and the result is,
that a class in Arithmetic, which is entirely a
young class, having never before worked a
problem, did two or three examples, which ut
terly bafHed two of our teachers. W.IY.S.
