field, on Saturday the 21st day of March, at 2

March 11. MANY.
To Carpjenteks. We invite the special at
tention of carpenters to the advertisement of
Wm. Irvin, Esq., of Curwensvillc, who will re
ceive proposals for the building of a dwelling
bouse, until the first of April next.
We direct attention to the card of Weaver,
Fitler & Co., of Philadelphia, dealers in Ma
nilla and Hemp Ropes, Carpet Chain, Yarn,
Bed-cords, &c, which will be found in the ad
vertising columns of the Journal.
. f New Advebtisexekts. L. R. Carter offers
a house and lot near Clearfield for sale ;
Hugh M. Riddle a house and lot in New Wash
ington ; J. II. Hommer has grain and mer
chandise to exchange for boards and shingles ;
several other notices also appear, to all which
attention is directed.
U-set. On Saturday evening, as James
B. Graham, Esq., was coming down the hill at
the east end of town, in a buggy, the breech
bind of the harness broke and caused the bug
gy to run on the horse, who took to his heels,
and in attempting to run past a sleigh upset
the buggy. Mr. G., and one of his sons, who
was with him, fortunately escaped without in
jury, and but little damage was done, we be
lieve, to the vehicle.
ScsQCEHissA Limber Trade. The Star,
printed at Wrightsville, Pa., in a rcccut num
ber, states that the pi ice of lumber at that
j Uco has varied but little for several months.
There is a full supply of cullings there. The
Star then goes ou to say :
'Several tim!er raits have arrived at our
wharves from Northumberland, and we under
stand there arc at Lock Haven some 500 rafts
of sawed lumber and timber, a goodly portion
of which may be expected to reach this point
by Saturday next. It is said the supply of
lumber to descend the Susquehanna this sea
son is large, and it might be supposed that pri
ces would abate some, but this, we think, will
hardly bo the case, as the supply is not ade
quate to the demand."
The statement that there are 500 rafts at
Lock Haven is so egregiousl; incorrect that it
will provoke a sniilo on the countenance of any
individual at any point from Lock Haven to
the head of the river ; but as it is well calcula
ted to mislead persons at a distance, (the par
agraph having been copied into Bicknell's Re
porter,) we deem it but right, as a matter of
candor, to say that not over fifty rafts, if that
number, all told, had reached Lock Haven this
season. As to the quantity of timber and lum
ber that is at this time ready to be sent to
market from the West Branch, we are satisGcd,
from the best information we can obtain, that
it is considerably short of last year's product.
The uncertain duration of the recent snow de
terred some, who had timber a considerable
distance from the river, from hauling it ; such,
however, as had it convenient to the riv
er, which would enable them to get in enough
to construct a raft, have been busy hauling.
At this time, wo think the entire quantity of
lumber at and in the streams will not more
than supply the deniard, if it will do that.
Hollowat's Pills, a most famous Remedy
Jor the Cure of Nervousness and General De
bility Jasper M'Cann, of Bridge Street,
Brooklyn, Long Island, New York, was with
out doubt a severe sufferer from nervous and
general debility, the least thing provoked his
irritability, put him in a passion, and laid him
npj this was caused by the bad state of the
fluids, and though he tried many remedies for
his complaint, he was not benefited. At length
he had recourse to Holloway's Pills, which
quickly performed their part, by removing the
injurious fluids from the system cleared his
head, real or'cd tone and vigour to the stomach,
and after five weeks perseverance, restored
hiin to the blessings of health.

CC7Another search for Sir John Franklin.
The British Whig says that preparations are
being made in Canada for an expedition to go
in search of Sir John Franklin. For this pur
pose Dr. Rea is building, in the Kingston
dockyard, an Arctic schooner, to lie ready in
May next to go to Quebec, aud thence to the
Arctic regions.
EyThe dam at Columbia, Pa., suffered con
siderably by the late ice freshet. A number
of breaches were made, and much of the tim
ber used in its construction was swept away.
It is estimated by some that it will require
forty thousand dollars to repair the damage
done to this structure.
SP0ur readers will recollect that shortly
before the inauguration, Mr. Buchanan had
returned home from Washington sick. He
had stopped at the National Hotel, which was
terribly infested with rats, which a boarder at
tempted to exterminate by giving them arsen
ic. The rats, after being poisoned, sought
water, and got into a large tank from which
the house is supplied with drinking and cook
ing water. Twenty or thirty of the guests,
among them Mr. Buchanan, J. Glancy Jones
and John L. Dawson, were suddenly and some
severely affected from the use of the water
thus impregnated. Efforts were made to keep
tho matter quiet, but it finally leaked out.

THE AMERICAN COUNCIL.
At a meeting of the American State Council
of Pennsylvania, held at Altoona, on the 4th of
March the following preamble and resolutions
were adopted, viz :
Whereas, It is manifest that the different
wings of the opposition party in this State are
unable to overcome their common adversary
except by means of a union and concentration
of force ; Asd wheras, It is proper and pru
dent that there should be such a union of these
elements ; therefore,
Resolved, That tbo American party is in fa
vor of and heartily desires a union with the
other wings of the Opposition paity in the for
mation of a State ticket upon any basis which
recognizes the great cardinal features of Amer
icanism. Resolved, That when this Council adjourns,
it adjourns to meet in Altoona, on Wednes
day, April 15th, 1857.

at an advanced age.
At Grahamton, on Thursday the 5th inst.,
of Scarlet fever, Martha Elizabeth, daugh

9 years and 23 days.
Poor little Martha is gone. No more will
we hear her sweet voice on this earth, npr see
her skip over the play grounds with her little
sikters and schoolmates. She has gone to dwell
in the arms of Him Mho has said, "Suffer lit
tle children to come unto mo and forbid them
not, for of such is the Kingdom of Heaven."
During her brief illness her sufferings were
intense ; but she is now free from suffering and
pain, and dwells where pain and sorrow never
more can reach her. It was hard to part with
her yes, it was hard to part with poor little
Martha but it was the will of the Lord, and
we submit. The Lord gave and the Lord has
taken away blessed be the name of the Lord.
A mourning class, a vacant seat,
Tell us that one we loved to meet.
Will join our youthful throng no more,
Till all these changing scenes are o'er.
No more that voice we loved to hear,
Shall fill her teacher's listening ear ;
No more its tones shall join to swell
The songs that of a Saviour tell.
That welcome face, that sparkling eye,
And sprightly form, must buried lie
Deep in the cold apd silent gloom.

COMPOUND SYRUP OF WILD CHERRY.
FOR THE CURB OF
Bronchial affections,Coughs, Colds, Pleurisy, Bron
chitis, Asthma, and all other diseases of the throat
and lungs, except Consumption. This invaluable
remedy is no quack nostrum, but is prepared from
the recipe of a regular physician, who during a
practice of twenty-five years, used it with unpar
alleled Success. It is a combination of expecto
rant remedies, simple in their character and used
by every educated physician. It is easily taken,
produces no nausea or other disagreeable effects,
and gives almost immediuto relief. In this ever
changing climate, where coughs and colds so fre
quently end in consumption and death, no family
should be without this certain cure.
It would be easy to follow in the wake of the ven
ders of patent medicine, and multiply certificates
got up for the occasion, of miraculous cores, but no
such adventitious aid is necessary in introducing
this preparation to the public. Its real value, and
never failing success, in accomplishing all promis
ed for it, cannot but give it a wide circulation, and
reoommend it to all those afflicted with diseases for
which it is a remedy. Price 37s Cents per Lottie.
