Til tJTiBWS THE JOUKML. . CLEARFIELD, PA., MARCH 4, 1857. - Moke TTwtek. Laat Friday night several inches of snow fell in this region. On Satur day it melted some; Sunday, however, was cold and blastery, and the weather has contin ued winterlike up to this time. c Look Oct f Some thieving rognes have recently been leaving their inark' about our town on several occasions. Oa last Saturday night the establishment of Thos. Robins was entered at one of the back windows.Lut wheth ert was dona with a felonious intent, or mere ly to sample Tommy's ale, is not certainly known. On the me night, several pieces of beef were stolen from the landlord of the Man sion IIouso. Firs is CcnwE.9viLLE. On last Thursday night, about 11 o'clock, a house belonging to Wax. Irvin,Esq., occupied by Rev. L. L. Still, was destroyed by fire. It seems that the fire originated in a cabinet shop, occupied by Mr. Joshua Baker, and then communicated itself to the house. Mr. Still's books, the clothes of Lis family, nnd a quantity of meat, were burn ed with the bouse, and Mr. Baker lost his tools, some 500 feet of boards, &c. Mr. Ir vin's loss must be about $1200, partly covered by insurance. We do not know what the loss tf the others will amount to. . Tna Timber. Bcsixess. It is almost impos sible for any one to form a correct estimate of what the timber business in any season will a raount to, as it is dependent upon so many con tingencies. A large quantity of timber may be 'made,' th:t is, the trees felled and squared up, as was the case this winter ; but it may not reach market. Much of the 'made' timber lies several miles from the river, and cannot easily be hauled to the stream without snow. The sudden breaking up of the present winter prevented the hauling of a very considerable quantity of timber and to convey it on wheels is to a great extent impracticable, at least un profitable. The fall ol snow last Friday night, though too slight to render hauling easy, and the freezing of the ground, has started anew this'part of the business, but without more snow it will have to be suspended again. Prices have been good, and may continue so, if the quantity of limber already hauled is not too largely increased and the market overstocked. " Resolved, That experience has demonstra- " ted that square timber rafting is a losing bu- " siness, and a clear waste of the productions " of the country. Besides the great loss of " the best part ot the log in jugglus and chips, experience proves that it involves the loss " alto of the timber actually got to market, ' for in no period of five consecutive years, have the manufacturers of. square timber " received more for their products than they it . .i i . . t i i , . . i. cAjieuueu 111 wurs ami iauor, ana in tuning " them to market:" The above is one of the resolutions passed , . , . 1 i T T r . , . .. .-j- me jug men it i l.ock iiaven on tne lst ult. . -m . . ... . Jiere. is an acknowledgment in effect that the Egging and square timber business come in tantact with each other just what has always Lm contended by those opposed to log float iff. If they conflict, one or the other must tstiTer by an unrestricted continuance of both, ant no one will be at a loss to determine which U vll! be. By tho Coating ot loose logs, the saf-y of every raft that descends the river is mot or less endangered. The only conclu sioijjwe can arrive at then, is, that our Lock Iivn neighbors wish to "crush out"' the raft ingiusfness fo destroy the lumber and square tiuitr business. They say "the old system of lumiyr is foo expensive, too hazardous, and too iriccrtain to warrant remuneration, or jus tify ie risk incurred," and are in a sorrowful atatif mind about the "great loss of the best partjf the log in juggles and chips." Well, onr jeople aie willing to si:stain the "great loss 4 the jnggles and chips," and to run the risk if making the business "remunerative," if tfcrf were protected from the obstacles that are th4wn in their way by the log men. All they ak all they desire is to have an open way iot to have the river filled, during fresh ets, w iti loose logs to such an extent as to prevent he running of rafts with any degree of safeiA But, more than this stop the square tiller business, and you interfere with ship, brie, and other building requiring large timb. And in doing this, you impede commercialipcrations, clog the rapid progress cf internal itorovements, and do a wrong to the commun at large and to individuals. s - Black Snilp among the Saints. Brig bam Young, II gh Priest and first President of the Mormon Cc&cil of Latter Day Saints, at CJrcat Salt LakeQity, and hold-over Governor of Utah Tcrritorthns endbrses the bad char acter of -some of U followers : "Wc can pick ol elders in Israel right here, who can beat the 4rld at gambling, who can handle the cards, c and shuffle them, with the smartest rogue e God's footstool. I can produce elders here ko can shave their smar test shavers, and takotheir money from them. We can beat the worhat any game." This is an honest c&fession at least, but there are "elders in Iel" the world over who are almost if not qie as bad as Brother Brigham Young's follow. In the eloquent languag pf Mrs. Somebody, "We are all poor critters. C3Truc. Profane sweamg is abominable. Vulgar language is disgustig. Loud laugh ing is impolite. Inquisitiveijss is offensive. C7Aaron Irely was found guilty at the late term of the Clinton County Court, of stealing a horse from Geo. Custard in last October, and sentenced to.two and a half years' imprison ment in the Penitentiary, pay a fine of $190 and costs of prosecution. DC7"A grocery kept by a man named Cross, in Wcsleyville, Erie county, was entered on Saturday last a-week, by a nnnibcr of men and women of that village, and his liquor emptied, bottles broke, and every vestige of intoxica ting drinks entirely destroyed. KPImpracticaLJe. Dr. Hall recommends, by way of prevention against taking cold, that persons going out of heated rooms into the o pen air should keep their mouths shut.' The cantion may be very wise and judicious, but what art the ladies to do 1 mAbsent-minded the man who went into a house for the purpose of talking seriously with its inmates on the subject of their habit ual intoxication, and instead of taking tho master by the hand, took hold of the brandy decanter, and did not discover his mistake un til admonished not to drink the whole. The New York Conrierand Enquirer publishes a letter dated San Juan, Feb. 12, which it declares to be from a reliable source, to the effect that the troops of Lock ridge and the woman-liuntcr,-Titus, have been defeated at Serapiqui, and that the end of Walker's career is at hand. CP"The Rural New Yorker reminds farmers that the wheat fields will need their closest scrutiny during portions of both February and March. When the weather is mild and thaw ing, sae that the surface water is provided with the means af escaping. Proper attention to this now will bo bushels in the granary after harvest. ClChild stealing, the New York papers say, is practised to a great extent in that city. Pro bably, on an average, two children in a week are abducted from their homes while playing on the sidewalk, and are detained until the af flicted parents offer a reward for them, when the kidnappers bring their little victims to light and receive the money. They ought to receive a place in the State Prison. A Warning: to Calituimpians. A num ber of young men who had annoyed a wedding party, in Chester county, with the outlandish noise of a calithumpian band, consisting of "horse-fiddle," cc., were tried in the Chester county court, week before last, ior riot were convicted and fined each $23 and costs, and received a very wholesome lecture fromjJudge Haines. Wc arc rather inclined to say, it ser ved them right. C7"Talton B. Butler, a timber cutter of Seri- ven county, Ga., went to Savannah, to sell timber, and was taken sick, and it was thought died. There being a boat about to leave, his remains were deposited in a coffin and sent home. On opening the cofliu after its arrival, he was discovered to smile. Medical assist ance was immediately called, and it is said that ho is fast recovering. He was in the cof fin nearly two days and nights. C"The New York American State Council finished a session on last Wednesday at Troy. The Binghampton Platform was reaffirmed, with additional resolutions, declaring that un der every political complication the question of Americanism shall take precedence, and that the American Party is unalterably opposed to the extension of Slavery into territory from which ie-hasbeon excluded by the Missouri Compromise, and opposing the use of the power of the General Government to extend the institution of Slavery. All the secret ma chinery of the order was abolished. KFThe execution of Simon Green for tho murder of Michael Kclley, which was to have taken place at Harrisburg on last Friday, was deferred by a lespite from Gov. Pollock until Friday the 27th of March. The respite was granted in consequence of representations hav ing been made to the Governor that important testimony had suddenly been discovcred,whIch would give an entirely different aspect to the afiray which resulted in the death of Kelley. Green is an Irishman, was working on the Le banan Valley Railroad, near Harrisburg.where Kelley was also working, and without any known provocation, alter having passed Kel ley, who was making peace between two fellow laborers, returned and stabbed bis victim twice with a small tnife, which caused his death in a few days after. These facts wero elicited on the trial. . . A New Test. The Democracy of Ohio have adopTed a new test of party orthodoxy in that State. Any man who voted for or defends tho expulsion of Slough from the House for strik ing Caldwell in the face on the floor and while that body was in session, is unfit for fellowship among the Shillalihs. The Cleveland Plain dealer boasts that "not a democrat voted for the expulsion of Slough, no not one. A crary man by the name of Corry so voted out of pure cussedness,' but he was no democrat. He is a sore head, and sorry specimen at that." i . ... . Slough, the locofoco member of the Ohio Legislature, who was expelled from that body a short tima since, has just been re-elected by three of a majority. . He hails from Cincinnati.
