(Concluded from first page.)
onld endorse without fgiving ground for the
accusation of disregard of bis obligations to
th Union and the Constitution, the Tested
tight, of the South being fuliy gnaranteeed
by it.
Still there was no barm in poshing Mr. Fill
more in the South if be was willing to place
himself in the breach, but it was madness to
attempt to stem the resistless torrent of the
FreeSoil sentiment of theNorth, where almost
with one accord the people had for two years
determined to averfge the cause of Free Labor
and Free Speeeh against the aggressions and
assaults of Southrons. It was worse than mad
ness to push Fillmore and Fremont to each
other's disadvantage in the North. Each
should have been pushed to the other's advan
tage, and both with a single eye to the defeat
of Buchanan. But while Fremont was not ur
ged to the injury of Fillmore the Fillmore
presses were found assuming attitudes of the
. most fatal hostility to Fremont, and through
him to the interests of the opposition. The
charge of Catholicity inglorious!)' urged a
gainst him, betrayed the utmost want of polit
ical judgment in its utterers, and caused all
who desire to save the country from a contin
uation of the misrule of the last four years, to
tremble for the result, and not without cause,
since that alone lost to the State Ticket in
Pennsylvania in October, many thousands of
Totes, or at least enough to have carried the
ticket through.
The Democrats saw and profited by, and fos
tered this feeling, and by it defeated in the
very States in which the election was to be de-1
cided, a combination which would have been
fatal to them. And all sincere enemies of
Calhounism, and Pierce-Douglas-Democracy,
as laid down in the Cincinnati platform, are
lett to regret that American intelligence and
aelf-confldence cannot rise superior to the low
ribaldry of rowdy demagogues, and the vul-
. gar vituperation of the Irish crew, which con
stitutes th strength ol the party of the "Ins."
In all the Northern States except New Jersey
and Fennsylvania, (or if the exceptions were
more numerous it matters not, since in them
the die was cast,) the opposition finding Fill
more unavailable except for a diversion in the
South, or as a forlorn hope on the possible
chance of its licing necessary to throw the
lection into Congress, adopted the fusion
plan Of action, which had been contemplated
from the beginning. In these States it was
peremptorily declined by thcFi'lmore leaders,
in obedience to sinister inGuence controlling
them, and the sensitiveness of a few thousands
of the American rank and file to the epithets
""of "Woolly Heads," &c, lavished upon them
by jeering crowds of Celts and noisy hurrah
boys. If Democrats in the South could with
impunity say they would prefer Fremont to
Fillmore ou their Congressional antecedents,
and if Mr. Fillmore was charged there and in
California with distinct abolition proclivities
to his fatal injury, it would have been no
more than "a Roland for an Oliver" had Fill
more men in the North claimed the right to
prefer Fremont to Buchanan.
By the miserable infatuation, if nonest, by
the atrocious villainy, if unduly influenced, of
the Fillmore leaders in Pennsylvania and New
Jersey, the opposition was defeated, notwith
standing the acknowledged advantages it pos
sessed of nationality of views, aims and ten
dencies; and Disunion Secessionists can shake
bands with Abolition Fanatics in mutual grat
ulation at the triumph of sectional agitation
over the cansc of domestic peace, and Soule,
at bis 50,000 dollar hacienda in Nicaragna, can
celebrate with Walker the triumph of Elibus
tcrism and land-piracy over the plighted honor
of the national government, and the hitherto
untarnished name of the American people.
Against the recurrence of similar eventuali
ties there is but one protection and that is to
be found in an immediate organization of all
opposed to the dominant party in one united
body, a careful and judicious selection of lea
ders, with the adequate diffusion of reliable
information, and its application to the issues
of the hour, through a well-directed press, up
on which the people can rely, both as to facts
and the views upon which their action should
be based. A beginning cannot be made too
soon. The organization which elected Jack
son in 1828 was entered upon in 13-1. It re
quires "a long pull, a strong pull, and a pull
altogether" to ensure success. The Deniocra
cy can dictate, we must enlighten. Tbey can
command, we must convince and persuade.
They can move their forces by the tap of the
drum, and we must arouse our ranks by the
calls of patriotism and the dictates of ascer
tained duty. With them "the orders of the
day" are obeyed, blindly and implicitly ; with
us intelligence and jealous vigilance has to be
moved by the light of reason, and satisfied by
unanswerable argument. To arms! then, to
arms ! Assemble ! organize in wards, town
ships, counties, States! Take time by the
forelock, and be ready, all told off, to strike
for victory in 1859.
