Expiked. The term of Robert Mahaflby,
Esq., as County Commissioner expired last
week.
"Jack Frost" is on hand, and within the
last fcr days the atmosphere has been quite
winter-like.
Good. The receipts of the Virginia State
Agricultural Society during the recent fair a
mounted to $7,590.
Swors-Ix. John Irwin, Esq., the new Coun
ty Commissioner was sworn in and entered up
on the duties of his office last Friday.

Iowa. In 1810, the population of Iowa was
78,9Si$. The estimate of the present year is
000,000. The increase, last year was 274,000.
St. Pail. By a census recently taken, the
Imputation of St. Paul, Minnesota, amounts to
9,973 souls. The Pioneer and Democrat vou
ches for its accuracy.
The weatuer lta been rather moderate
nnd favorable this fall in this region of coun
try. Recently, however, some rain has fallen
and caused muddy roads.
Large Flock. Mr.McConncll,of Sangamon
county, Illinois, has the largest flock of sheep
in the United States. It numbers, 21,000,and
all of the choicest merinoes.
Aboft. It is said that another individual,
partaking of the ubiquitous character of 'Sam,'
and, like him, death on Locofocoism, is begin
ning to make his appearance in different sec
tions of tha country.
Heavy Bi'sisess. The Wheeling (Virginia)
Times states that an average of 70 car loads of
produce and merchandise is now daily trans
ferred at Bcnwood and Bcllair, the railroad
people being kept busy.
What it Costs. The aggregate salaries of
the persons connected with the Police Depart
ment of Philadelphia, exclusive of the Mayor,
Marshall of Police, and the Mayor's clerk, a
mounted, last month, to $30,970 0G.
A Fact That decidedly the largest and best
stock of Fall and Winter Goods ever brought
to Clearfield county can be seen at the store
of II. D. Patton in Curwcnsville. He has al
most everything that can be thought of, which
is required in this country. Give him a call
and sec for yourselves.
Ttrket. Since the publicatffcn ot the new
toleration law in Turkey, one hundred and six
Christian churches have been repaired or con
structed. The Sultan alone contributed $-3000
to one building. In fact, everything is done
by hira and his government to conciliate his
subjects in this respect.
Tns Ncmber of Voters. The whole white
male population of the United States, for in
stance, over 21 years of age, and, to be pre
sumed, entitled to vote is about 5,100,000,aml
yet the votes cast at a Presidential election
seldom exceed 3,100,000, leaving 2,000,000 of
inhabitants who do not use their franchise.
Nicaragua. In Granada, Nicragua, a few
weeks sinee, Col. Alexander Jones, Paymas
ter of Walker's army, was married to Miss
Mary II. Musgrove, of X. Vork. Col. J. was
one of the original "fifty-six" who entered the
country with Walker. This Is the firstAnieri
can marriage that has taken place iuXicaragua.
Small Notes. In accordance with the law
of the last Tennessee Legislature, on and after
September 1, 18-j6, the issuance or circulation
f small notes of a less denomination than $5,
by any bank except the Bank of Tennessee, is
made an indictable offence, punishable by a
fine of not less than $500, nor more than
$10,000.
Novel Bet. A couple young ladies in our
town allowed themselves to become excited a
bout politics so much as to make a wager on
the result. The one was a friend of Mr. Fill
more's, and was so certain of his success that
alio bet her "hoops" against the bonnet of tho
other, who was an admirer of Mr. Buchanan.
We fear that the "hoops" are gone.
A Kick Ur" among the Colts. The N.T.
Post says that some difficulties have sprung
up between Mr. James Colt and Col. Samuel
Colt, his brother, and that the former, to cn
force his claims for $750,000, has attached the
property of tho Colt Manufacturing Company,
of South Hartford, Connecticut, which will be
contested in a court of law. The sudden de
cease of Mr. Jocelyn, the Treasurer of th
company has, in tho absence of the Colonel,
created some impediment in the management
of tbo Company.
As Amazon. There is said to be living
upon Bate's Island, in CascoBay, off the coast
f(Maine, a woman of tie most wonderful
powers of hardihood. The island contains
about five acres, the largest portion of which
she lias put under cultivation, raising hand
some crops of potatoes and other vegetables
yearly. The land never was plowed, but has
been thoroughly hoed over by her. The re
maining portion she devotes to raising hay of
- ; nni;ir. everv cron of which
ho has mowed and cured with her own hands
The early i.art of the day she devotes to fish
ing, going through the breakers in a fragile
jskiff, rowing single handed, where many i
strong man would quail and hesitate. The re
suits of her day's fishing she exchanges for
money and gieccrics, with dealers who visit
BaEAnsTiTFfi. During the l.il month there
were shipped from Philadelphia, by packets
and steamers, to England, over S0.IKK) bushels
of wheat, 50,000 bushels of corn, and 10,000
barrels of flour.
Important Decision. It is stated that the
Secretary of the Interior has decided agaiast
the ruling of the Lite Commissioner of Pen
sions, making a discriminat ion between the
volunteer and regular service. The soldiers
of either service are, therefore, equally enti
tled to bounty land. A large number of claims
that have been suspended, pending the decis
ion of this question, will now be satisfied.
Terrible Earthquake. Intelligence ' has
been received by tho steamer Baltic, that a se
vere earthquake had taken place, which was
felt throughout Egypt. Two hundred houses
were demolished in Cairo. The City of Rhodes
was in ruins. Some damage was also done in
Smyrna. Fortunately but few lives were lost.
The earthquake also did great damage in Mal
ta, Messina, Pozzato, Syracuse, Catania, Can
dia, Ccrigo, Gran, Michel and other places in
the Mediterranean, nouses, churches and
mills were reduced to ruins. Fifty lives are
known to have been lost.
Horrible Affair. Lewis B.Xonvood.Esq,
an influential and widely known merchant of
Granville county, North Carolina, was most
horribly murdered, on the 21st of October, by
two of his slaves. It seems that he suspected
the two slaves for harboring a runaway, and to
prevent the continuance of the practice, had
for several nights locked them up in an out
house. On the fatal night, however, he was
stunned by a blow, and a large pot of boiling
water, which had been prepared for the pur
pose, was poured through a funnel down his
throat, until life was cxtict.
A Bundle of Elopements. The Buffalo Ex
press gives the following chapter of domestic
difficulties ; Mrs. King, near Kingston, was
recently taken sick, and her husband seized
the opportunity to elope with a handsome ser
vant girl named Martin. On their arriv.nl in
Albany Miss Martin eloped with a young man
named Cornelius, taking Mr. King's money.
King being penitent, returned home and found
that his wife had eloped with a dry goods clerk
named Jeffers, with all the moveable articles
in the house. Whereupon King started oft in
pursuit, considering himself a deeply-injured
man.
Married On the Cth inst., by the Rev. X.
J. Mitchell, Mr. Daniel Yothers. of Kart
haus, to Miss Harriet Riter, of Eagleville,
Centre county.
