-. "TflE 11AU.MED MOOSE.
A friend of ours, says the Albany Trilune,
Bob 11., during the late cold terra, thought he
would go into Hamilton and have a moose
hunt. lie left the city in company with six
other gentYemenron'Wodnesday of last week.
After a ride of about twenty-lour hours, they
reached the borders of the great wilderness.
Having put np their horses and sleigh at tho
last tavern, they started out for a week's sport
in tho woods, tho second day in the wilder
ness, our frieud and party started a meosc of
first class proportions. They sighted him a
boui noon, and kept on Lis track till about 3
o'clock, P. M., when the party informed Bob
that they wero completely tired out, and they
intended to take the back track for the shanty
and have dinner. " .
Our friend said : "Very well, go back if you
please. As for me, I'll have that mooso or
perish in the attempt.". .The parly went back
and Bob went ahead. He kept up the chase
till dearly duk, when he got sufficiently near
the critter to give bim condign. lie was a
glorious fellow. " Like FranK Granger, "six
feet high and well proportioned." Bob was
rejoiced at his success. But bis pleasure had
one draw-back, "what could he do with him J"
Another source of uneasiness was the exces
sive cold, and the distance from tho shanty,
some eight miles. ? While philosophising upon
his tolly, night came on, and as there was no
such a thing as getting up a fire, he was at his
wit's end to keep from freezing. At last he
bit upon an expedient. , '
IIo cut open tho moose, took out its cn
trail's, and crawled in and lay down. The ani
mal heat kept-him as warm as "pepper sas.i,"
till about midnight, when he fell asleep. He
awoke about suurise, and thought ho would
crawl out and start back to his friends. There
was ono pull back to this arrangement. After
the heat bad left the moose, ho had fiozen as
t. tiff as a post, an operation that subjected Bob
to as rigid a confinement a if he had been
locked up in a Bastilc. Bob endeavored to cut
himself out with a knife, Bat it was uo go.
He might as well have undertaken to whittle
granite- Sob spent a most melancholy diy,
and finally worried nature into a sound sleep.
While thus unconscious, a company of hun
ters caine along, discovered the moose, fasten
ed a rope to his legs, and set about dragging
him out of the woods. This movement awak
ened Bob, who thought be was getting haunt
ed, and, therefore, commenced hallooing for
help. Such a noi33 coining from a dead moose,
excited the superstition of the hunters to such
a degree that they abandoned their prize and
fled as if the devil w,ts after them. After run
ning abont three miles the' met Bob's friends,
who had been out all day trying to discover
his whereabouts. The hunters told the.story
of the haunted mooso and the f trango nise
which came from bis abdomen. Bob's frindi
smiled.
; They requested tho hunters to return. In a
half hour the "haunted moose' was reached.
The- friends halloed "Bob!" Bob halloed
"here !" The friends said : "we are going to
cut, look out for the axe." Bob said : "let
drive, better have a damaged head than legs
made of Icicles.". Tho adventure has made
an impression on Robert. He s.iys the nest
time he sleeps inside of a moose, he will take
good care that it has "leather hinges on its
hack.'.' -
A MODERN VM. TELL
The following pieceof daring sport is i elated
by the Albany Transcript:
The feat in shooting performed by Tell iu
shooting an apple off thu head of his son, has
been told over and over again, and is as fainil
liar as household words, was a wonderful piece
of execution, close calculation and great dar
ing; Something similar was attempted and
ucccssfully performed in the village of Pitts
town,.Renscllaer county, about a week since.
The circumstancj was related to us as follows:
. There had been a turkey shooting, at which
several "crack shots" had assisted after the
shooting was over, the croM-tl adjourued to tho
tavern; numerous driaks were called for and
put out of sight, and the whole party some
what elated, commenced talking about Tell
when one of tho party, by tho name of Horace
AV. Wadsworth, remarked that he was as good
a. shot as ever Tell was, and said he "And me
a man, and I'll prove it," whereupon Alonzo
Grogan stopped forward and said, "I'm tho
man for you to practice upon," "Very well"
said W., "get an apple, and I'll try it."
Search was made for an apple, bat not finding
one readily, a potato was substituted, and the
crowd adjourned from the barroom to the yard.
The distance was paced. Grogan took his
place, with his cap off and potato on his head
when Wadsworth deliberately raised his rifle,
drew a fine shot on the potato, and discharg
ed his . piece arm's length. No one expected
that he would do it, and for a moment conster
nation was depicted on the countenances of
all the bystanders, until Grogan putting his
hand on bis head, said in an agonizing tone,
Ara I dead V "Is there any blood ?"
-It was found that Grogan was not dead, but
that the potato had been cutj in twain, and
that no blood had been drawn, though a ridge
about the size of a person's finger had been
raised on the top of bis head by the force of
the ball..
Grogan, who did not think that Wadsworth
would fire, waa seriously alarmed for a few
minutes afterwards, as he believed that his
ecull was split. He says that if any smart
etiota want to practice shooting potatoes oQ
any person's head, they must find t omc one
beside him to be the target.

IMPORTANT TO HOUSEKEEPERS and
FRUIT GROWERS. ARTHUR'S PAT
eat Air-Tight Silf-Sealing Cans and Jars, for
Preserving Frish Fruits, &c This invention for
which a patent has been obtained, commends it
self to the attention of Housekeepers and others,
on account of its great simplicity, and the etfeetu
al manner in which it accomplished a very desi
rable and useful object
The cans and jars are constructed with a chan
nel around the mouth, nerr the top. into which
the cover fits loosely. This channel is filled with
a very adhesive ceuicnt. prepared for the purpose
and allowed to harden. I n order to seal the ves
sel hermetically, it it ouly iieeresary to heat the
cover rltghtl y, and pres it intu pUrcc. It may be
opened with as much ease as it is closet, by Slight
ly warming the top. The ordinary tin cans, used
for the same purpose for which this is intended,
ciiunot be closed, as is well known without the aid
of a tinnsr; aro difiicult to op-n, aud are generally
so much injured iu opening as to be useless for
future service.
By this simple contrivance, the proccs of her
mctical sealing is plaeed conveniently within the
reach of every individual; and fruit, vegetables
and butter (if properly prepared) may be kept,
with their natural flavor unimpaired, lor an in
definite length of time. For sala bv
