XL S f! i M 1 It 2s' oi loss of Eeaitt. The Japanese women gild their teeth, the Indiana paint them red, whilst in Gaznret the pearl of the teeth, to be beautiful, must be dyed black. The ladies of Arabia stain their fingers and toes red, their yebrows black, and their lips blue. In Per i a, they paint a black streak round the eyes, and ornament their faces with Tarious .figures In Greenland, the women color their faces with green and yellow, whilst the hottentot women paint in compartments of red and black. Ilin doo females, when desirous of appearing par ticularly lovely, smear themselves with a mix tare of saffron and turmeric. In ancient Per ia, an aquiline nose was often thought worthy of the crown, but the Sumatron mother care fully flattens the nose of her daughter. Eas tern Sketches. Lord Seafortb, who was born deaf and dumb, was to dine one day with Lord Melville Jost before the time of the company's arrival, Lady JUeivuie sent into the drawing-room a lady of her acquaintance, who could talk with her fingers to dumb people, that she might re ceive Lord Seafortb. Presently Lord Gnil ford entered the room ; and the lady, taking him for Lord Seaforth, began to play her fin gers very nimbly; Lord Guilford didthe same ; and they had been carrying on the conversa tion in this manner for about ten minutes when Lady Melville joined them. Her female friend immediately said, "Well, I have been talking away to this dumb man." "Dumb !" cried Lord Guilford ; "bless me I thought you were dumb." Rogers' Table Talk. A Lady is Comuasd. It will be remembered that Lieut. Montgomery, of the United States Army, not long since lost his life in the ser vice, in Oregon. His death left his widow, formerly Miss Northrop, of Akron, Ohio, and one child, in comparative penury, as is gener ally the case with those who devote their lives to their country's service. She returned, and Gen. Jcssup, with the kindness of heart and chivalry which characterise a bravo soldier, immediately gave to htr, it is stated, the trust of Fort Gratiot, now unoccupied by a garri son, a duty which she can fulfil, and the pay of which is very fair. . Sadly Beautiful The New York Mirror says there is a young lady in that city so daz zlingly beautiful, that her guardians do not dare to allow her to go out of the house. She remains shut up at home, and is only visible lo female visitor. What a blessing the small pox would be to this imprisoned belle! It should be added, that, with the "fatal gift of beauty," the young lady possesses other charms amounting to about $00,000. To Keep a Stove Bb ight.- Make weak alum water, and mix your ''British Lustre" with it ; put two teaspoonsful to a gill of alum water, let the stove bo cold, brush it with the mix ture, then take a dry brush and lustre, and rub the stove till it is dry. Should any parts bo fore polishing, become so dry as to look gray, moisten with a wet brush and proceed as be fore. By two applications a year it can be kept as bright as a coach body. Ex. There was a fellow in New York State that asked a young lady out to ride ; the young lady agreed ; he drove around to tho house at the appointed time ; a young lady made her appearance dressed in the prevailing fashion ; having got herself and hoops into tho cutter, the young' man saw that there was no chance for him, whereupon ho mounted the horse's back and drove off in triumph. Gallant young man ! Plum Trees. It is said that Mr. John Brush, of Brooklin, has saved the plums on a number of trees, the last season, by binding bunches of tansy upon the limbs in several places. The fruit upon the trees thus treated ripened to perfection ; while that near by, not thus protected, was entirely destroyed by the cur culio. This is an item worth remembering for the coming season. A somewhat ECCE.TRic,yct celebrated judge, some years ago, was asked by a counsellor to put down a case lor the last Friday in the month of March, which happened to be Good Friday. His honor indignantly replied : "Xo, sir, I won't set any cause down for that day. There never was but one judge who tried a cause on that day that was( Pontius Pilato sir. The Washington Star cautions the public against spurious quai tcr eagles, which have made their appearance in the eastern cities. They arc dated 1854,' and are well executed, save their brassy color and light weight. "I dojs't wish to say anything against the person in question," said a very polite gentle man, "but would merely remark, in the lan guage of the poet, that to him truth is strange, stranger than fiction.' A ciiizen down east was dubbed "the little rascal !" A friend once volunteered to ask him why he was called the little rascal. "To distinguish mo from ray neighbors, who are al great rascals !" "There, John, that's twice you've come home and forgotten that lard." "Really, mo ther, it was so greasy that it slipped my mind."
