A Catholic Priest Fixed. The Rev. John
B. Weicomb, a German Catholic priest, has
been fined $590 at Chicago, for a volent assault
upon a lame boy, for whispering while attend
ing mass. The Court held the defendent had
no authority, in law or religion, to commit an
assault and batten- upon the boy on the

Elkctiox of Officers. -Mr. Crabb moved that
the Senate proeeed to the election of officrs.
The Senate adopted the motion, and pro
ceeded to ballot for Chief Clerk, which result
ed in the election of G. W. Hammersley over
T. A. Maguire, by a vote of 16 to 15.
On motion of Mr. Crabb, the Senate proceed
ed to the election of an Assistant Clerk, which
resulted as follows: For Henry Pettibone, 1G
votes; and for John K. Zeiln 15.
On motion of Mr. Piatt, the Senate then pro
ceeded to the election Transcribing Clerks,
which resulted in the election of Nelson YY'ei
ser, Tr. Clerk; J. II. Filler, 2d Tr. Clerk; Jno.
Ewing, 3d Tr. Clerk; J. W. Kerr, 4th Tr. Clerk.
The Senate then proceeded to the election
of Sc-rgeant-at-Arms, as follows : Cyrus P.
Miller, Sergeact-at-Arms ; Wm. P. Brady," 1st
Assistan Sergeant-at-Arms; John J. Stewart,
2nd Assistant Sergeant-at -Arms.
The Senate proceeded to the election of
Doorkeeper: O. D. Jenkins, Doorkeeper ; E.
B. Lytle, 1st Asst., and G. J. Bolton, 2d Asst.
On motion of Mr. Darsie, the Messengers of
the last session were unanimously re-elected.
Ou motion of Mr. Darsio, it was resolved that
when the Senate adjourns it adjourns to meet
on Tuesday at 3 o'clock, P. M. Adjourned.
Jax.9. The Senate was called to order at 3
o'clock P. M. After the reading of the Journal
of yesterday, the several oif.ccrs of the Senate
were duly nunliiied by the Speaker.
The Secretary of the Commonwealth was in
troduced, and "presented the returns of the
election held in the severeal counties of the
Commonwealth for Governor.
The Speaker laid before thc'Senate a report
of thy Connnonis?ioncrs to examine-the claims
for work done on the Main Lino of the Public.
Improvements ; also a communication from
Dr.' Kerwcn, Superintendent of the State Lu
natic Hospital, inviting the members of the
Sen.vte to visit that Institution.
Mr. Fry offered a resolution that the ofi'.cers
of the Senate, who have not been rs-elected,be

The Speaker Isid betore the Senate a report
fiom the Auditor General relative to the condi
tion of thescrveral banks oj the Commonwealth.
On motion of Mr. Killinger, a committee of
three members of the Senate was appointed in
corj unction with a similar committee from the
House of Representatives, to writ on the Gov
ernor elect on Tuesday next, and escort him to
the Capitol. Messrs. Killinger, Frick and
Cresswell were appointed said Committeee.
Senate, Jan. 12. On motion, a joint reso
lution was adopted to go into and election for
State Treasurer on Monday next.
The Senate then went into nominations for
State Treasurer, wheni some twenty names
were placed In nomination.
The ballance of the Session was devoted to
the consideration of the Governor's vetos.
The veto of the bill concerning the capital of
the Ilonsdalo Bank was considered and lost,
but subsequently the vote was re-considered.
The Lager Beer Bill, which bad been veto
ed, was lost yeas 10, nays 19.
The veto of the bill relative to the collater
al inheritance tax, was sustained by a vote of
27 to 1. The Senate then adjourned.
IIorSE, Jan. 12. A committee of three was
appointed on the part of the House, to escort
Gov. Pollock to the Hall of the House, on
Tuesday next, to take the oath of office.
A large number of bills were read in place,
and r.r.iong them the following: A bill for the
sale of the Delaware Division. A bill to erect
'Oonemaugh" county out of parts of Cambria,
Westmoreland, &c.,"ani "Madison5' out of
parts ol'Montgomery and Berks.
Hr. Smith, from the Select Committee there
oil) reported, with sundry amendments, the hill
to prohibit the sale of liquors on the Sabbath.
A resolution was adopted to elect a State
Treasurer on Monday, and a number of nomi
nations were made therefor, including Joseph
Bailey, Eli Slifer, Gideon J. Ball, N. P. llo
bait, and others. The House then adjourned.

The deceased was the mother of twelve children,

Her death was caused by dropsy, after two years
of great suCering. She fell asleep ia Jesus, leav
ing a briKbt evidence of her acceptance with joa
