« The commercial convention with G
Britain, was published this morning,
is very limited, but tolerably satisfactory:
4s far as it extends. Our commissioners
acted upon the principle, that it was more
politic to let the points in dispute between
the two nations remain unadjusted, than to
make an incomplete arrangement in rela
tion to them. The treaty was not ratified
yotil every mformation on the subject of
our commerce with the British was obtain-
ed by the Senate, nor until that body sa-
tisfied itself that the convention was not
disadvantageous to America ; this way the
catise of the celay in the ratification. As

our East India traders, but not so much;
as to justify a rejection of the treaty.
« The subject of the Presidential elec.
tion is canvassed here only in private; and
that with much delicacy Mr. Monroe,
Governor Tomkins, and Mr. Crawford,
arc the only republicans named as proba-
ble candidates tor the presidency ; 1 sus-
pect the question lies solely - between the
two former. There seems tobe a general
disposition ultimately to support, with an-
animity, the one who sholl receive a major
ity of suffrages in caucus. This spi ap-
gurs lrarmony and safety to the republican
porty, and consequently happiness and pros-
perity to the nation.
