The Ten Hour Law.
We publish, with pleasure, the following card from
oar friend, (Beuton,) E. H. Kerr, on the "Ten Hour
Law." Benton speaks oat without concealu.ent, and
it would have been meth better fur Mr. Williams'
organ had they not mooted the matter, for this hits
Thomas in a tender part. There would be no danger
of Mr. Williams speaking for the operatives. He
would have mach preferred going the other way, for
his interests are with the "upper tandem." The poor
factory girls could net get aid or language from the
would-be member of Congress. But no doubt the
friends of the factory hands will attend carefully to
his interests, (tonday,) and give "aid and comfort"
that he will understand how different it was with the
honest Democrat, Mr. Dannelly. lie went forward
and addressed their meeting, showing that he was
with them in their struggle for the hours that they
obtained by the exertions of Democrats. All honor
to them for battling in the good fight. Now is the
time to remember friends at the polls, and also punish
enemies. Then no friend of the operatives should
vote for Williams—he is not deserving these fevers,
when, in the day of their tribulation, ho refused to
aid them. Lot him bo remembered in a way that he
Will not forgot:
Sin. Issax:—Sho T.• ue Press of Saturday refers to me, in
connection with Gen. Moorhead, on the T.n Hour Law.
1 hero no knowledge whatever of Gen. Moorhead ps)ing
money ut Hurristurg or elsewhere, tier did he over oppose
at Harr.shorg the psi-age of the Ten Hour Law, so far as
my knowledge extends.
I em free to confess that I advocated the rights of the fac
tory operatives hare and at Harrisburg, which le well known
to them. 1 dew the act, au& requested the talented and
energetic member from your city (Sir. SWs tzwohler) to tack
It to a bill from the Senate, as it was the only way to get it
through. I worked late and early ti accomplish the good
work. Senator (Col.) Stnatl, of Philadelphia, took charge
cf the bill in the Senate and nobly did his duty.
I do not wish, even at this late cay, to glorify myself for
'Anne 1 considered a (free gift) duty.
1 was Chairman of a Convention of which Mr. Floesms
and the Rev. Smith were members. Our duty was to solicit
aid and speakers to further the cause of the girls. In the
performance of that duty, I called on Thomas Williams,
Msg., (now a candidate for Congress.) requesting him to ad.
dress u meeting in Allegheny city, and contribute. lie de
clined both, by remarking that the girls had better to go
work than do worse.
I afterwards observed ,Ir. Williams at one of our meet
ings, when Mr. Donnelly (now a candidate for the Legisla•
tore) was speaking. 1 urged on Mr. Williams to make an
address; he again declined, stating he did not wish to Inter
fere. Then It would be all proper for the friends of the
factory girls cow not to interlace for him. This would be a
Just retaliation on this distinguished advocate of the itch
against the poor. Truly, &c., IL U. K}IRIL.
English and American Railroads.—The following
interesting facts have been gathered by the editor of
the American Railroad Journal, who is now in Ea.
rope. ifs draws comparison between the railroads
of England and this country. Mach that is peculiar
to the railways of England and the United States
grows chicly out of some difference between the two
countries. The long passenger car in use in the
United States Is rendered necessary by its clime.
There is no mode of warming the English passenger
car. The latter, first class ear, is more comfortable
than the American first class, but to ride in it one
must pay twice the average charge in the United
States. The fare in second class in England equals
jest about three cents per mile. In these oars you
have nothing warmer or softer than painted wood
work. In fact, there is nothing but boxes with seats
on two sides. The third class cars are still more un
comfortable, so as to correspond in grade and aspect
to the lowest class of travelers, the average rate of
fare in these is nearby equal to the first class faro on
some of the best roads in America. In addition to a
high rate of fare, baggage is sharply looked after.
For two fair sized trunks the traveler between London
and Liverpool has to pay $2,50 extra baggage. Tray
cling in England is at best twice as expensive as in
America.
Sacred Meteic.—The following remarks, by a writer
for a religious exchange, are worthy of perusal and
thought : "The one luxury that seems divinely suited
to all hearts, instinctively and naturally sacred,
while it is exquisitely enjoyable by all—is what is
commonly understood as devotional music. We have
long thought that a sufficient knowledge of music
for family devotion should be a part of every child's
education—boy and girl. To play five or six simple
tunes upon an instrument, and play them well, is not
much labor to learn. Half the time and toi: often
spent in teaching a girl to play many tunes indiffer
ently on the piano, would teach her to perform a few
tunes exceedingly well on the melodeon,—and a vast
deal more to the refining and elevation as well es to
the delight of her family and her friends. 4nd that
this small amount of skill should La expanded upon
devotional music, will at once Le admitted by every
mind that has once reflected on the influence of such
music upon the feelings and character, as well as on
its fulfilment of a duty of household worship."
Haul of Thieres.—Un Monday morning, officer
Hague, of the Mayor's police, arrested three worthies
of supicious character, nailing last from Cleveland.
Their names are Gee. Sanford, alias Bedford, James
Smith and William Marvin. Information had been
received that they were coining, and they were found
at the Mansion House, on Liberty street. They had
in their possession a quantity of raw goo4s, such as
coats, pants, vests., handkerchiefs of silk 'and lioon,
unhemmed, ladies' scarfs, and other articles, sup
posed to be the result of the robbery of some
clothing store. Hague knew Sanford at once, having
seen him in St. Louis. He is a professional thief,
and does not deny it, says he has followed the busi.
nese for seventeen years, and was never " cribbed "
but once. He was familiar with ovary face in the
"Rogues liallery," and said he knew them all person •
ally. The three were sent to jail, and the geode rci.

to be found their political salvation.
P.J. Sinclair, Esq., closed the meeting by a short

superior watches ale wade by the aid of new and original
machinery, expresaly designed to secure, with a low prig,
a MY, dUBSTANTI6.I., DUatalLll and nanrallitLY RELIABLE time
keeper. The movements are new in construction, and are
pronounced by the highest authorities to be faultless in
principle and quality, and have been proved by the wort
exacting teats to be reliable and unfailing In action. Those
watches are manufactured entire from the crude materials,
in a single establishment, by connected and uniform pro
cessea, the manufactory being organized upon the came sys
tem that has b.en adopted In the rodaction of the une
qualled American Lire-arms, which enables us to produce a
movement at one half the price of any foreign movement of
the same quality ; and we guarantee the perfect perform
ance, for ten years, of every watch manufactured by us.
All foreign watches are made by band, the American
watches being the only ones made by machinery upon a
uniform system throughout. Nearly all hand made watches
are defective, and are continually getting out of order. In
many parts of the country it Is impost/11We to find good
watch repairers, and watch repairing is always uncertain,
and expensive. The introduction of American watches
disposes of this difficulty, and country merchants, as well
as watch dealers, can keep watches as part of their
laneous stock, and thus supply their customers with a new
staple, which may be used as any other article, without
mystery or humbug. Sold by the trade generally, and by

The best cure for worms, either in children or adults, over
offered to the public, is undoubtedly the Verenifuge, pre.
pared by B L. F.hnestock.. Thirty years experience in this
class of medicine has given a cure guarantee that this la an
article every way worthy of contidenca As a cure far
worms it claims to be unequalled, and as a merchantable
artlclo.it is prepared and sold as D. L. Fahnestock's and uo
other, as the proprietors do not wish to have It confounded
with any other article of Vermifuge lIJW in the market.
WILSON'S PILLS have had a mere local existence for
over twenty years, unsupported by alvertieing of any kind,
and held at dcuble the price of what they are now sold at,
yet with all these disadvantages, wherever used they have
in no instance failed to render the utmost satisfaction iu
performing all the requirements of a valuable family medi
cine, and as each are recommended by some of the most
worthy and responsible citizens of the land. Hear for in-
Stance what 001. Wm. Hopkins, of Washington, Pa.. says:
WASZIMIToN, January 8,1858.
Dr. R. A. }Filson, filtsburgh, have been using
your Anti-Dyspeptic Pills, When occaalcn required, for many
years, and can truthfully say that I have never found auy
medicine equal to them In relieving me from affix lone of
the stctuach and head ; they have never failed to relieve me
from headache, and have always left my system in better
wudition than they found it. I must confidently commend
your pills as a Bale and highly valuable medicine.

Gentlemen:—ln my opinion of the merits of Dr. R. A
Wilson's Tunic, Cathartic and Anti• Dyspeptic Pills, I will
briefly stste that for many years pest they have been a
standing medicine in my famby. A box of these pills Is
always loft within the reach of any one who may feel the
necessity of taking a dose, say one to three.
Whether it is owing to the efficacy of these pills or not, I
do not pretend to say; bat I can safely asset t that since we
have used them, my family has enjoyed uninterrupted good
health,-and I cheerfullnrecommend them to all who duly
sppreiate this inestimable blessing.

The first place in p7:llir, estimation Is now justly accorded
to the GROVER Lc BAKER 51A0FILIVE, for family Sawing,
for the following reasons :
/st. It is MORE SIMPLE and EASILY KEPT IN ORDER
than any other machine.
2d. It makes a seam whiai will IOT RIP cr RAUH',
though every third stitch in cut.
Bd. It sews from two ordinary rii , ooia, end thus all trouble
of winding thread is avoided, while the same Machine can
be adapted, at pleasure, by a mern change of spools, to ail
varieties of work.
4th. The same Machine rims ell t, linen thread and spool
cotton, with equal facility.
6th. 'The seam is as elastic as the Moat elastic ishric, so
that it is tree from all LIABILITV , to aelm, in WASH
ING, IRONING, or otherwise.
oth. The stitch made by this hia , Mine L 3 more BRADTI
ITIII, than any other made, either b) , hand or machine.

THE CII EMIC AL OLIVE ERABIVE
SOAP, manufactured by B.; O. a J. 11. Sawyer, re.
receives the preference over all other kinds ever offered for
family use.
Its advantages mi . other E 043 ara: , .-lat, It Is cheaper -
to use, one peandlneug equal .tO• three of common rosin
Soap. 2d. Half* time need only ho eccapied in wenadrig
when this Soap is treed in place di other Soap. M. Labor
willg can be nearly dispensed with, aa the clothes .
require little if any rabbingi thus avoiding their wear
on the washboard. 4th. Boiling the clothes is unnecessary
when this Soap is used, and hard or salt water answers
equally as well as soft. 6th. Printers, Machinists, Painters
and others, find itfar superior to other Soaps. It speedily re
moves grease, tar, paint, printers' ink and dirt from the
hands, leaving the akin soft, and fres from chapping.
To avoid the labor of rubbing the clothes, and the use of
the wash.board, the following directions should be followed
Per the washing of eight or ten of a family, take one
pound of Soap, cut it Into shavings, and dissolve in one
gallon of hot water; put the clothes into a tub cong
about ten gallons of warm water; pear, pa the, ved
Soap, and stir thoroughly. Let th em soaktwanty to thirty
minutes, wring out, and rinsen ward, water °rine, cold
water twice. A very dirty wris .d, or seam, or grearse
spots, may reqtdre a slight bbing, but otherwise the
riteu
clothes will come out clean and'l White, without rubbing or
balling. Cold water may be used in place of hot, requiring
about double time in sooting.
