'
RETT, OF TEE NEW YORK LUNG INFIRM.
AllY.—My connection for the past eight years with tile
above Institution, as' hief Physician; and a twelvd yoga'
course of steady devotion to the Caro of Pulmonary Con
sumption and its kindred diseases, together with my tin
rivalled opportunitiea and advantage of pathological research
—aided not a little by a perfect system of Medical inhale:
ficra—has enabled me to aarlve at a decisive, direct and Edo
eased course of treatment for the positive and radical cdre
of all diteases of the Yaronf, lamas, and .4siri s astoget. By
Inhalation, the vapor and curative properties of medicines
are directly a:tressed to the diseased organs and the integu
ment. Ido not advise the use of Medical Inhalation of any
kind: to the exclusion of general treatment and although' I
consider it a useful adJavant in the proper management of
those fearful and often fatal diseases, yet I deem it very ma
cessary that each patient should have the benefit of both
general and local treatment. The success of my treatment
in the above diseases, and the high character of the Institu
tion over which I have so long had the honor to preside, are
tact - well known to need any eulogy or comment from me.
At the solicitation of many private and professional friends,
through whose philanthropic aid the above charity , has been
long and liberally supported, and after clue consideration, I
have concluded to make such arrangements as will bridg
the le. neats of my, experiments and treatment within the
reach of all, and not confine myself, as heretofore, to those
only who entered the Infirmary, or who were able to N i4l t
meat my officio: 'Upping therefore that the arrangemeat
will give entire satisfaction, both to my professional breth
ren and the public, I would respectfully announce in con
clusion, ttuat /can nom be consultecipersonaliy or by better,on

mreeVin the Institution, prepired to snit each Individual
case. Inhaling Vapors, - Medical rnhakrs, cee., cfc., will be
forwarded by ()sprees to any part of the United States or
the Canadal. 'Passes—My terms of treatment by letter ace
as follows, Via . : $l2 per month for each patient which will
include medicine-sufficient for one month's nee; also, lii

lows tsB to be pall)) Express Agent on recent of the box
of Medicine, and - the balance $8 at the expiration of the
month, if the pati,nt be cured or he entirely satisfied with
the treatment. Patients, by giving a full dilatory of their
case, and their symptoms in full, can be treated as well by
letter as by personal weemination. Patients availing thorn
selves of Dr. Jarrett 's treatment may rely upon immediate
and aermanent relief, is he teklom has to treat a case over
thirty days. Leiters for advice promptly answered. For

"And the sentence of the court is, that you,
Robert Amer, shall be confined in the State
Prison for the term of_ seven years.
Seven years ! it was too short a time. Why
did be not say seventy years? I could net
die in seven years. Let me hope ; perhaps' I
may. Another buzz and hum, and I was
taken to my old cell, to wait my removal to
the State Prison next day.
I think I slept better that night than I 'mid
before since my arrest. The trouble was
principally over ;1 had only one point to fulr
fill. I had charged all that as soon as 14
brother Wilson had recovered sufficiently , to
speak with any one, r a hater I had written
should be given to him. In this letter 'I
charged him, by everything that was Agered,
by all the past, by his care, for my life, and
for my hereafter, to come to me, to let me sde
him, and 'converse with him before he breathed
a word to any living person.
I was stretched out upon my pallet the
morning after my trial; the padlock clanked
against the door. It was an unusually early.
hour for any one to enter my.celL I only '
thought it was the call for my departure to
change my confinement, for one .more
some. I sprang to my feet, and. received in
my arms my dear old father. He could not
speak : he only cried out aloud like a child,
and held out a paper in his hand. The keeper
who had opened the door, it was, who said :
" A pardon."
A pardon from the Governor ! I was not
thankful. No, then I was not. But God'
doeth all things well.
Mechanically I went forth into the pure air
of. heaven. My father sobbed all the way.
I shed not a tear. Why should I Weep ?
had been defrauded of my due ; I had been
denied my atonement. My father wished : to
carry me home—my dear father! Ho talked
of all his plans for the fature—how I was to,
be reinstated with Allen: & Graham, who
were to forget all, the past, and give me back
my old position in their confidenee 7 how the
notes bad been paid. All would be well.—
But poor Wilson was yet speechless, and the
old man's tears broke out afresh. I was cold
to every one that said. " stay." I only con
sented under his tears to go to the old home.
stead for a day or two, on condition that no
body was to see me during that time ; no one,
save himself and the old housekeeper, who
had always - been to me as a mother. I des,
Oared to my father my unalterable intention
to leave home—to leave the country, and seek
in another land, forgetfulness of the peat.
Two days I staid in my father's house.' In
this time I wrote a long letter to Wilson,-tell
ing him all the past—my love for.. Eunice ;
my criminal thought against her, and against
himself, myjoy of the bearing the burden of
his guilt. I told him I was happy, and in
conclusion, swore that if ever he betrayed
my secret, I would curse him, and hate him
unto death.
This letter I left in the hands of my father,
to give to Wilson whenever he was able to re
ceive it. Another I left for himself, telling
him to look upon his son Robert as dead.—
And the next morning at _daylight I- stole
noiselessly into the old man's room, kissed
his hand, and went out into the world to be
gin my life.
And now it is the 21st of January, 1858,
and I sit here by the inn window and ,look
down upon the old scene, and oh I with what
different thoughts than when I last gazed ti
on its ever well-known locality. •

Of dandalphon, the Angel cf Glory,

How erect, at the ontexmost gates.

With his feet on the ladder of light,
That, crowded With angels unnumbered,

As harp strings are braketitiakilsiler,.
By the music they throb to express.
Bat serene in the rapturoue throng,
Unmoved by the rush or the song,
With eyes naimpassloned end slow,
Among the dead angels, the deathless
Saldalphon stands listening, breathless,
To sounds that asoend from below—
From the spirits cm earth that adore,,
From the souls that entreat and implore,
In tho-frenzy and passion of prayei—
From the hearts that are broken wittlosses,
And weary with 'dragging the crosses r eja.
Too heavy for mortals to bear, ,
And be gathers the prayers as he stands,
And they change into flowers in his hands,
Into garlands of purple and red ;
And beneath the great arch of the portal,

Is wafted the fragrance they shed.
It le but a legend, I know—
A fable, a phantom, a show
Of the ancient Rabbinical lore ;
Yet the old medieval, strange superstition,
The beautified, strange . anporatitlon,
But haunts me and holds me the more.

And the welkin above !sail white,

TEN YEARS AND TEN DAYS.
A TALE OF EXPIATION
LCONCLIMED.I
The day of the trial came. It was rarely
the inhabitants of the little town had an op..
partunity for anything approaching excite
ment. The schedule of crime for years had
•
not risen above petit larceny. It was there%
fore made a gala day when the son of 'Squire
Amer was to be arrainged for a heavy crime.
I could see, as I glanced from the windows of
the carriage, that the town was alive. A
crowd of shouting boys followed us, and
another of men blew their foetid breath in
my face as I passed from the carriage to the
court-room. A confused -murmur of voices
was about me—a sea of faces. I could discern
figures flitting about. I knew that many
spoke to me—but I know not whether
they were answered or not. I could recog•
nize faces that seemed to me familiar in
dreams way off in forgotten time—long, long
ago ; a century, perhaps, or more.. I saw the
Judge upon the bench—a grave white hairE;il
man, and for an instant caught his eye. It
said to me:" ity, pity, so young I But _I
must do my dmity." And then I heard hitn
ask :
" Who is the counsel in this case ?"
And I answered as though I talked to one
far away : " There is no counsel : there is no
defense ; the plea is Guilty." Then I could
hoar a murmur of disgust and disapprobation
go up from the crowd, who had been disao.
pointed of their amusement, and the voice
of the crier calling "Silence," and the order
of the Judge, that any one of the audienie
disturbing the court should be ejected, and
then there was silence, I could hear the
scratching of the clerk's pen as he recorded the
plea.
NUMBER; 310
for four years. It was here my father and
Wilson first heard df me, and wrote. My
father's letters impldred me to return home
that I might be with him 'when he passed into
the silent land ; he bade Me•come . and inherit
the old man's savings ; he said that Wilson
had prosposed, that! he was 'begining to be
thought the wealthier tman in the town ; Wil
son wanted nothing 9 from his father ; it was
all reserved for me.
Wilson alsd wrote me to the same end.—
He was, he said, in bbd health ; he had never
entirely recovered hid` shock; he asked that
I would return ; he was only living until he
could throw himself•at my feet; thank me,
bless me, confessulland,die.
My answer to mylather was my blessing
and promise that I would see - him at some
future tithe, in this worlihor the next and the
remittance of a very large sum, which I
begged he would invest as he saw fit', and use
the income in any way h 6 pleased; if he had
no use for it himself', let it be bestowed in
charity.
To Wilson I did net write ; I sent. through
my father, words of clove and affection to him
and to Eunice.
I deter Mined in my own mind never to re
turn home, while Wiltion lived.
In October of lastiear, receiveff.the
in
telligence of his death. - I had from his de
clining health, been expecting it; still, when
it came, I was shocked and could not for a
long time recover. With it came several let.,
ters from my father) and from Eunice. , 'On
his death bed,•Wilson had told all--all , but
my criminality. Hej had produced my parts
ing letter, and died, cleaving all his property
in my hands to be disposed of as I saw fit.
Eunice's letter was very short; every word
was written with a ! trembling hand, but it
still said, "Come, come, come."
I must go home. j i
1 ape here; to-morrow 'I shall see my dear
L old father and—Eunice. I stay here topflight
that I may look upon the town and collect
myself.
I have thoroughly examined my heart, and
know that all the pant is blotted • out, where
it touches my, first lOe for, Eunice. I. shall
only look upon her a 6 a darling sister, and
sincerely pray I may. never think of her in
any other light.
To..morrow I shall see them all, including
my two nephews, r.oert and Wilson, whom
I am prepared to luve in advance. Good
night. r
First of February-4 open this paper again
to say that I hafve been at home ten days to..
day. In that time I have lited ten years. I
have seen all, and it Deems scarcely possible
that ten years have passed away. My dear
father looks younger than when I went from
home. There is nothing altered; in the town.
The old house has hen a publicplace for that
ten days. Everybody has insistbd to see me
whether I wished to be at home or not. They
have pressed upon me all sorts of rough and
kind congratulations. I have received bush
els of potatoes, apples and turnips, in press
ants, to say nothing of cabbages and other del
icacies. Mr. Allen and Mr: Graham have
been to see me. Old !Mr. Allen cried a little
bit, but made no reference to the past.', All is
known, for which I grieve deeply, I would
far rather the secret had been kept, and I left
to,die abroad in the midst of all my happi
ness. I still doubt myself. They are fine boys,
my nephews. Robert is nine years old, Wil
son seven. I shall make a soldier of Robert-
That I sounds 'presuMptuous, but I speak as
one who is left sole gutardian of the boys, and
I see a decided leaning in the temperament
of Robert to such a calling. He declared to
me yesterday his intinse admiration of the
character of Napoleoti ; who knows but he
may be a second .Napoleon. Wilson will be
a merchant. My dear old father behaves like
one demented.; He cannot seem to be disgust
ed with my society. His strongest - anibition
is to carry me triumphantly through the-sur
rounding country, introducing me to those
who already knew me,My son, ,sir . , Only
thirty-two years old,'" and then sotto voce,
" Has been ten years abroad, sir, and made a
quarter of a million. "j I am indeed very
happy to think my good fortune is a source of
pleasure to him, though his simple wants will
not call for its use. '1!
And--I have seen Eunice.
Eunice is still more peantiful than when I
loved her. She is twenty-eight this day; it is
her birthday. So yohng to have passed
through so much. Everybody admits her to
be the most beautiful woman in the.country.
I have made over to Eunice all my brother's
property for herself, and the boys I will tend
to in good time.
My first interview with Eunice was very
painful ; I was not prepared for anything like
it. I may as well tell hbw.
The first day I returned after seeing my , ra
ther, I had some difficulty in getting his cow,
sent to go alone to see Ehnice. The old gen..
tleman seemed to fear I Would never return--
, that I would slip off for, another ten years.
After some trouble, I got a furlough of a cou
ple of hours.
I opened the door of the house, as in the
old time, and walked dirhotly into the parlor
