MASS MEETING IN ALLEGHENY.
The Democracy of the 2,2 d District Aroused.
MMENSE ENTHUSIASM
SOUND RESOLUTIONS
As had been previously announced a meeting of
the National Democracy of the Twenty-second Dis
trict was held in the Diamond, Allegheny, last night.
The air was chilly and disagreeable, and we expect ,
od to see a slim attendance, but w«re agreeably sun.
prised to find a goodly unmoor assembled about the
speakers' stand.
At eight o'clock the meeting was organized by the
appointment of Henry Shriver as President, and Lee
A. Beckham and Wm. Clayton as Vice President=.
The following resolutions wore pref, ened by R. li.
Kerr, and adopted with enthusiasm. They speak
out boldly as the Democracy should do; thorn is no
concealment in them; their language cermet be mis
understood by the enemies of the party. The Presi
dent is most fully endorsed; so is the champion of
our principles. Senator Bigler. The Governor is also
deservedly noticed, and our townsman, Ccl. Black, is
espoused by hie former companions and bosom
friends. When will a Williams meeting speak out
thus? They dare not, for their leader would not to' er
ate such an endorsement of true princip'es.
Resolred, That the friends of Pre.ident Buena - l A -h. in
mass meeting assembled, approve of his administration, and
Inasmuch as there were Oahe! , in Gtfice under the admin
istration of Gen. Jacktion, we recognizs the like io
the
present; ; Jackson removed them; let Buchanan act as he
did, and the Democracy will fully endorse his independence.
Rese/o , d, That like the Democracy of the olden time,
who
aroused tne people to a sense of the r danser, hurled the ma
rauders from power, repealed the alien and sedition laws,
and rescued he Constitution from desecration and outrage,
we pledge ourselves to sustain, by our votes, tho purity of
Democracy by the election of Captsin Birmingham to Cr o
gress, and preserve, protect and deGud the 4 'onstittition;
and we invitee' friends to rally to the etendard that was
nevereatsced by a true Democrat.
- Said - .That In Senator Bigler we recognize a faithful
friend of our glorious principles. lie has stood firm in the
faith, which entitles him to our gratitude.
Besolred, That in Gov Packer we have u man worthy of
his high office, who will fearlessly administer the law in
despite of petty factions, and will be sustained by those who
rebuke traitors.
Besotted, That we recommend to the President for the
appointment of Governor of Nebra .ka our late (talented)
fellow-townsman, Col. S. W. Black, now Judge of that Ter
ritory. His appointment would give funeral eat
Rewired, That oar State ticket is eminently su , itled to

able mat,. His appointment by our Governor is a sufficient
rOCOMMelatititio.l to the Democracy.
After the reading of the resolutions. the crowd
called vomferously for an address from Mr. Kerr, who
held forth in his usual animated style for three quar
ters of an hour. Ho handled Mr. Williams very
roughly, and illustrated his position by several very
appropriate anecdotes, which were kindly received.
At the close of Lis remarks, Mr. Roberts, Chair
man of the Democratic State Central Committee, was
loudly balled for. Ile took the stand and dehvered
a short bat impressive address, in his able and mas
terly manner—urging the Democracy to adhere to
their party and their principles, and viotury must
crown their efforts. He was greeted with three
hearty cheers on retiring from the stand.
Hun. P. C. Shannon and Capt. Birmingham were
both demanded, but the latter gentleman declining,
Mr. Shannon m,unted the rostrum, anti addressed
the meeting with great ability and his usual
quence. Ho was severailimes interrupted by marks
of approbation from his auditory. He advocated
strongly the election of Mr. Birmingham, showing
the importance of the Democracy adhering to their
party and their candidate, and showed up the politi
cal inconsistency and a•eurance of Thomas Williams.
His remarks occupied about forty five minutes, and
although it was quite late and very cold, the assem
bly manifested no "signs of impatience. When he
had concluded the meeting adjourned, with three en
thusiastic cheers for Birmingham.
Canvas and Cement Roofing.—Until within the
past ten or twelve years, almost the only kind of
roofing used in this city was the old fashioned shingle
roof, which answered the purpose of keeping out the
weather very well. The chiof objection to them was,
however, the necessity and expense of frequent re ,
pairs. To remedy this necessity, various experiments
wore made—and also with a view to protect against
fire. Iron, zinc, tin, gravel, and other materials,
were tried, against all of which objections were
urged, with some reason. Within a few years, sev.
oral patents have boon introduced for making a du
rable and substantial roof, which seem to combine
many excellent qualities. Among theso, we th nk
the "Improved Elastic Canvas end Dement EWAN',"
manufactured by Bates & Johnson, No. 'id Smithfield
street, worthy of special attention. They are PreF'
pared to apply thes new roofing, which is both fire
and water proof, to either new or old roofs, and also
to repair old gravel, tin, iron or zinc roofs, making
them perfectly water tight and securing them from
the action of the weather. Mr. Johnson, of this
firm, has had a long experience in the business, bo
ing a member of the old firm of Perrin d Johnson.
Wo can recommend him and the firm ofs which he is
a member to the patronage of the public, assuring
them that any work entrusted to them will bo faiths
fully and promptly executed.

Accident on the Pennsylvania Railroad.
An accident occurred last Wednesday on the Penn
i Sylvania Railroad, a short distance from Baileysburg,
I and about twenty miles from Harrisburg, which re
sulted in the death of two men, named Larry Moore
and John Wagner, of Harrisburg.
It appears that near Bailoysburg, a "slope" or
side wall on the Pennsylvania Railroad required
some repairs, and orders were given to a gang of
masons to attend to the =Ater. These masons, eight
in number, boarded at Newport, four miles west of
the spot at which their services were required. On
Wednesday morning they.left Newport on a hand
car, and proceeded ea.t on the road, running as fast
as the wet and rlippe7y Free of the track would al
low. The emigrant train, moving west, had pulled
them, and there was no danger of a collision in front.
Bat behind them, the oxt ruse train, which left this
city Tuesday afternoon, was coming on its regular
time. When the hand car was about forty yards
from the Baileyeburg switch, it was overtaken by the
engine of the express, and thrown upon the cow
catcher, on which it was carried for a considerable
distance. Before the locomotive struck, the masons
jumped. Six of them escaped safely, but one of
them fell. One of these unfortunites, Mr. Moore,
was instantly killed, and the other, Mr. Wagner,
died during the day. The morning was so foggy
that the engineer could not see the length of two cars
ahead.

The superiontendent of the gang of masons, Mr.

ba attributed. The party were not regular employ

Another Attempt to Swindle Sipped In
the Bud—Heavy Forgery Discovered.
The Philadelphia Pennzsy/vanian, of Wednesday,
says :
" We learn from New York that forgeries hobo br. n dis
covered, committed on the American Exchange hank, which,
however, were detected before paid. They purported to be
cert ticutes of deposit, one for $16,600 and another for
$12.51.0, oioued by (JaL.ley as cashier of the Bank named.
They were presented by the Mercantile Bank, who received
them from the Citizens' Bank of Pittsburgh. They were
made payable to the order of J. W. Lang'on, who in
formed them, and V. hose eignature as endorser was verified
by the Vice President of ihe American Exchange Bank, he
having formerly kept an account there, but failed In busi•
nese several years ago, when to went Went."
Upon inquiry, wo learn that an eastern finan
cier, evidently of the Peter Funk stripe, camp on
here to take the stock of the 14PKeospert Bank and
mad use of these certificates of deposit, which
were aftorwards left at the Citizens Bank for cut
lecti .e. The bank did not cash them and of
course hos suffered no loss. It forwarded the cer
tificates to Now York for collection, and the fictitious
character of the paper was discovered as above stated.
It is needless to say that the financial gentleman
has never called back to leer a the fate of his
speculation. It is to be hoped thb police will oateh
the reseal. It was a bold scheme at fraud to at
tempt to raise fends by forgery to start a bank, but
fortunately the rascal has mado his western tour
without putti , g any thing into his pockets. Lang
den is said to have been at one time a partner in a
house in Cincinnati.

assault and battery. This prosecution grow out of
the same transaction as the above suits, Newman

struck Newman with a handy billy, which was after
